Deciphering Autism offers a broad and optimistic perspective on autism, with a focus on those in the moderate to severe range of function. It delves into recent research on brain dynamics, genetics, immunological factors and perception. However, it pivots mainly around how autistic people adapt to their challenges, how they convert brilliantly. a world of internal confusion into an elegantly structured set of perceptions, emotions and behavior patterns - all designed around the need to produce their own rhythmic regulation when the neurophysiological systems typically designed to do that, are compromised. The book describes autism as both a disorder and a series of adaptations; both of which necessarily included in a definition of 'autism'. Finally, in light of what research has shown and how autistic people adapt, the book delves into the possibility of energy and rhythmic regulatory therapeutic possibilities that might one day, provide remedy for this disorder.

Our nation is currently in a unique and perilous time of division which includes our communities of faith. Unique in the sense that issues of faith are being used by many secular and sacred sources to exploit the divide of our nation further and perilous because if left unchecked, our nation could move to civil war. "Faith for the Times" first describes the political, social, and civil issues facilitating the division in our nation's faith communities. Following those descriptions are discussions of methods to heal those divides supported by anecdotes and experiences from over thirty years of ministry in various communities of faith in the Washington D.C. area.Divisions in our nation exist in several ways, but in this writing, they are generalized into the three areas of political, social, and civil. What is most alarming about our times is that these divisions combine with the many existing divisions in the communities of faith in our nation. There have always been divisions between types of faith and there have been many conflicts between them throughout history. But it seems that since the turn of the century, beginning with the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York City, that conflicts among some of the major faiths such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have escalated. What's more, with the accelerated political polarization of the Evangelical Christian community, divides between denominations of the Evangelical church have grown. In the first part of this writing, the author describes the dividing of our nation, and the role faith has played in that division. This is done by borrowing a technique used by David in the writing of his Psalms using the term "shadows". The author applies that term as the "shadows of faith" as an illustration how our faith influences our political, social, and civil expressions of living. The intent with Part 1 of this writing is to expose the complexity of the divide in our nation and how faith interacts with that divide. In Part 2 the author addresses how to close the divide by faith. There is no pretense in this writing to suggest a nation as big and diverse as ours could be united with this one writing. But there is a confidence portrayed in the text concerning what God has done in the author's faith journey that allows the writing of these words and ideas as something to ponder and perhaps light a spark to begin the healing process required of our nation. The reader is invited to embrace what may be a new conversation of faith. A faith that focuses more on what we have in common with other people of faith than what divides us. That passion has been birthed in the author because of a faith journey not of his choosing but by his experience. Being raised Catholic the author converted to Protestant as a young adult. Moving through several denominations by experiences of faith the result has been a faith and a passion to impact people for God, not for a particular denomination. The reader is invited to join this celebration of faith with the author.

I love driving. I have driven since I was six, and learned on the old Farmall tractor from childhood days in rural Northern Ontario. We never had a car growing up; I swore when I grew up, I would drive somewhere every day. My happiest place is behind the wheel. Home nursing gave me that perk, and every patient I visited turned out another story, names never used and situations slightly changed to assure privacy for participants. My mother lived a thousand miles across the province from us, so in order to ensure my little ones knew their grandmother well, we often dropped everything and headed for 'Grandma's'. Each of those road trips was a story in itself. Something of note would happen every time we set out on such a journey. For instance, my daughter and I were at one time both nursing new babies (and THAT is yet another book). Between the uprooted schedule we both maintained for our babies, we did not take into consideration that our nerves would get the best of us. I recall my daughter saying she was headed for the river bank halfway to our destination and don't bother coming to get her. I could keep both babes since it was obvious she knew nothing about mothering. I swear I don't recall questioning her parenting, but to this day she claims I did. Loudly. Could have been something to do with the fact my last baby was born when I was 45, not much left in the patience locker.I am an obsessive fisherman. My fishing rod is always in the trunk. I would travel out of my way for one little cast to see if fish are biting at a nearby lakeshore, or I would jump into my boat and be gone for hours, sometimes days after the big catch. Those lake trips added many miles to my log of distance and stories.I also play music in a bluegrass band with my daughter. We log many, many miles gong to festivals, practices and local and regional musical events. I have always had a rather large vehicle to contain in the early years kids and all their quilts and cuddle toys and sippy cups and anything else they snuck on board. Later years I had to carry medical supplies, briefcases, office supplies, and the like for work, then instruments and sound equipment for the festival circuit, and a front seat filled with coffee maker and a sizeable cooler for the many meals I had to consume while driving.¿¿At all times I carried a clipboard and attached pen to record the noteworthy things that happened on my various trips. Those clipboards filled quickly. In later years it was a laptop and/or tablet and cell phone gracing my passenger seat. Since my nursing career began in the early seventies, and motherhood as well, and musician matters all my life, plus the fishing and the snow machine miles, you can imagine I had ample grist for this 'Million Miles' mill. The book is filled with my life on the road, a memoir.

It was the 80's. The disco era was long over... club life and 'the hunt' had taken on a whole new form, and if you worked at the mall… in this case, as a hairstylist at a top salon, had that special look and way about you, and loved women as much as this guy did, then you were in your element 12 hours a day… P.S. … this is not a teen mall romp ala Fast Times At Ridgemont High; far from it... it's more like 'Shampoo' meets 'Don Jon' meets 'Wolf of Wall Street', and in a twisted way finds you both loving, hating, and in some cases rooting for, the protagonist author who decided to put his bio down on paper almost 4 decades after it all took place, in his biography, King Of The Mall… Definitely for mature readers only…There is a poignant and very well told back story to it all though, throughout the entire book… escaping life from a small Northeastern Pa. coal mining town, and, the possibility of being trapped in a mundane existence there. The author, Wolfe Armand Scarpati, takes us on a journey from early childhood, and, the joys of growing up in an Italian, Roman Catholic household during the 50's, and then well into his young adulthood during the turbulent decade of the 60's.He very aptly schools the reader on what it was like during simpler times, as well as the angst of life after high school, in one of the most historic years of that time… 1969… avoiding the draft, a short unsuccessful stint in college, and almost getting trapped in a series of blue collar labor jobs prior to entering the beauty industry quite by accident, and finally finding himself; beautifully told with family anecdotes, thoughts of times past, and how things were.Along the journey of growing up, his sexual appetite had developed into overdrive, and in finding his new life and career as a hairstylist, he also finds an outlet for that behavior, as well as his career niche… a career where he could not only be somebody, but also have an unlimited variety of women. His affairs are numerous, and are laid out in great detail for the reader.Along the way, he does the stupidest thing that a guy in this position could do… he falls in love (or so he thinks) and gets married, only to find that his overpowering sexual appetite takes precedent, and realizes that the marriage was nothing more than the result of a time of weakness. With his career in full bloom, and having now migrated to the suburbs of Philadelphia, he becomes one of the top hairstylists in the area, in a salon located in a large suburban mall. His extracurricular activities completely take over both his thought process and his life; his friends call him the King Of The Mall… he could have almost any female he wants… some are his clients, and some work in the mall… but he's simply not happy, and emotionally empty. An eventual divorce ensues, and leads him on a somewhat repentant journey into the city that never sleeps, New York, where he hopes to clear his mind and soul while purging his past.During that same time frame, his upwardly mobile career, which had been on a fast track with the mall based chain of salons, ends up going bust due to a corporate buyout. Along the way he is constantly juggling… not just his career, but also failed affairs with women, and most of all, his lack of control as he tries to find balance, peace of mind, and the one woman who could finally keep his sexual appetite both fulfilled, and grounded.A true story wrapped with a bit of fiction to "protect the innocent… and… the not so innocent", King Of The Mall is an extraordinarily candid look at the hairstyling industry and the mall culture of the 80's… but be advised… this guy makes Christian Grey
