The Internet encompasses all types of websites, from social media monoliths to individual blogs, from Justin Timberlake fan sites to Fortune 500 businesses. Everyone has a voice, and the medium has become the ultimate level playing field for those seeking to interact with the world through an always-on, instantly available, nearly ubiquitous venue. Fewer benefit more than businesses. In this sense, the term business is encompassing; we're talking about mom-and-pop stores, global giants, local nonprofits, churches, and more- anyone who seeks to create a conversation with customers, clients, patrons, members, and prospects. Web Design and Marketing Solutions for Business Websites was written to help make those websites better. Since the lifeblood of business is fostering customer relationships, it is imperative that a w- site serve that purpose unequivocally. From the very first contact with a prospect, to guiding them through the conversion funnel, to sustaining them with ample support material, to maintaining contact through proactive communication-all of this is designed to attract c- tomers and keep them satisfied for the duration of the relationship with your company. This book covers the many facets of building a site that serves customers and maintains a positive marketing light on the company. First, the basics: content, accessibility, and archit- ture. Next, the guts of the website: the homepage, the About section, products and services, support, and the blog. After that, enhancing the website: testimonials, legal material, and strong contingency design. Finally, promoting the website: search engine optimization, c- tomer newsletters, and advertising.

Microformats burst onto the scene a couple of years ago and are fast becoming an essential tool for all professional web designers and developers. Imagine being able to integrate all of your web-based contact details, tagged articles, and geographical information seamlessly in web and desktop applications, without having to add anything extra to your websites except a little specialized HTML markup.Microformats provide a more formalized technology for adding commonly used semantics (such as contact details, location, and reviews) to today's Web. Unlike XML or the semantic Web, microformats use ubiquitous technologies like HTML and XHTML, existing developer skills, and current web tools, and, perhaps most important, they work in all of today's web browsers. This book is a comprehensive guide to microformats. It explores why—in Bill Gates' words—"e;We need microformats,"e; how microformats work, and the kinds of problems microformats help solve. The book covers every current microformat, with complete details of the syntax, semantics, and uses of each, along with real-world examples and a comprehensive survey of the tools available for working with them. the book also features case studies detailing how major web content publishers such as yahoo put microformats to work in their web applications.Written by one of the Web's best-known educators, John Allsopp, Microformats: Empowering Your Markup for Web 2.0 will help you painlessly get up to speed with this exciting technology.

Since the emergence of Google Maps, Ajax programming techniques have become one of the hottest topics in the programming arena. To date, the frameworks available for creating these applications have been complex and have separated the development of the client–side Ajax (on the user’s machine) from the server–side supporting technology (on the company’s machines). This separation has made development slow and difficult.ASP.NET AJAX is Microsoft’s solution to this problem. ASP.NET AJAX (formerly code–named Atlas) is a set of extensions to the existing ASP.NET 2.0 technology that provides you with a fast-and-simple environment to create Ajax applications. Microsoft has combined Ajax with ASP.NET technology and provided a unified set of development tools within Visual Studio 2005. For the first time, Ajax applications can be developed seamlessly in conjunction with a supporting technology.Foundations of ASP.NET AJAX (written by Laurence Moroney, the author of Apress' successful Foundations of Atlas) gives you a detailed grounding in how ASP.NET AJAX works. It takes you swiftly through the basic principles of Ajax, then deep into the heart of the technology, where every namespace is discussed and every function considered. By the end of the book, you’ll know all the essentials to confidently produce cutting-edge ASP.NET AJAX applications swiftly and professionally. You will not need any reference beyond this book.

If you're a web designer or developer who thinks that the coding involved in developing dynamic web applications is too difficult, think again. This book, and the framework it covers, is the perfect solution to your needs. Ruby on Rails provides an easy-to-use method for quickly developing web applications, simplifying potentially complicated subjects such as web architecture, JavaScript, and SQL/database creation. The simplicity of Rails belies its power, though¿this technology is used by major companies such as 37Signals and Google. The book provides an introduction to Ruby on Rails with the web designer in mind. Instead of focusing on the intricate syntax of each method, the book focuses on the tasks youll want to perform on your website and then walks you through how to implement that functionality with Rails. Design and usability are kept in mind throughout, ensuring that your site both looks and works great. The book begins by covering how to set up your computer as a Rails development environment (including the MySQL database) and then follows with an introduction to Ruby and the basics of the Rails framework. Next, you are taken through several practical examples that work together to build up a complete modern web application, covering essential and useful website features such as user login, adding and editing data, data validation, image uploading, and much more. The book even covers more-advanced Rails topics such as the Rails test suite, plug-ins and components, debugging techniques, and deploying your web applications using Capistrano.

System administrators know the Internet is a hostile environment. They can't tell when a hacker will attempt to gain access to the SQL server, but they can bet that there will be an attempt soon. Because the operating system is vital to a computer's functioning, and because it's the only layer between the machine's available resources and its users, it's critical that the operating system resist compromise. Hardening Windows is an intermediate-to-advanced guide to implementing preventative security measures for the Windows operating system, and it's the only book that covers NT, 2000, XP, and 2003. This book is designed to provide a quick and easy checklist-style reference to the steps system administrators need to take to anticipate attacks and compromises, and to harden Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003 against them.

Iterating Infusion: Clearer Views of Objects, Classes, and Systems is a one-of-a-kind book, not dependent on any single technology. Rather, it provides a way to integrate the most efficient techniques from a variety of programming methods, in a manner that makes designing and programming software look easy.Iterating Infusion presents comprehensive tools for you to best manage and work with object orientation. These include simplified fundamental concepts, popular language comparisons, advanced designing strategies, a broad usage progression, thorough design notations (interaction algebra), and data-oriented (fundamentally-OO) languages. The title, Iterating Infusion, alludes to the fact that any system has multiple, coexisting functional levels and that new levels—both lower and higher—are continually added to the same functional area. The practical effect is to bring processes into focus, always clarifying the vague. The extreme form of this is when separate but compatible technologies are brought together to create advancements; these can be baby-steps or great leaps, with varying amounts of effort. In more general terms, the same thing in a different context can take on much more power. And actually, this phenomenon is at the heart of object-oriented software.Readers have been confirming that, compared to books on just low-level details, Iterating Infusion presents cohesive insights that allow you to solve more problems with the same effort in more key places.

Perl, one of the world’s most diffuse programming languages, was born out of the need to resolve the creator's dissatisfaction with what were at the time standard data-parsing solutions. Indeed, since the 1.0 release in 1987, Perl has been heralded for its powerful parsing capabilities features that are further enhanced through the thousands of Perl extensions made available through CPAN (the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network).Pro Perl Parsing begins with several chapters devoted to key parsing principles, discussing topics pertinent to regular expressions, parsing grammars, and parsing techniques. This material sets the stage for later chapters, which introduce numerous and powerful CPAN parsing modules, and provide an ample supply of example applications.

Rigor Without the Mortis Many people (especially agilists) associate a high-ceremony software development process with a dead project (i.e., rigor mortis), and this association is not entirely incorrect. Our approach aims to put back the rigor while le- ing out the mortis-that is, we can do rigorous analysis and design without killing the project with an excessively high-ceremony approach. The goal of this book is to describe that process in full detail. Agility in theory is about moving ahead at speed, making lots of tiny course corrections as you go. The theory (and it's a good one) is that if you spend months or years producing dry specifications at the start of the project and then "e;set them in concrete,"e; this doesn't necessarily (and in practice, doesn't) lead to a product that meets the c- tomer's requirements, delivered on time and with an acceptably low defect count. It's likely that the requirements will change over time, so we need to be prepared for that, and it's likely that a lot of the original requirements will turn out to be wrong or new requirements will be discovered after the requi- ments "e;concrete"e; has set. Agile methods answer this problem in a number of different ways, but the overriding principle is to break things down into smaller chunks and not to go setting anything in concrete (least of all your requirements specs).
