In 1859, Lewis Case Laugenour invested his wealth, which he acquired during the California Gold Rush, into establishing a town called Lewisville in Forsyth County. In the late 1700s, the surrounding area was visited by frontiersmen, Colonial soldiers, and pioneers journeying down the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road. Travelers often stopped at Shallow Ford on the Yadkin River to camp until the river was safe to cross with wagons, horses, and livestock on their way to a new home, to war, or to trade in nearby Moravian settlements. Over time, this area of rolling hills, rich bottomland, streams, and abundant wildlife was settled. By the late 1800s, Lewisville became a bustling stopover for travelers who utilized campgrounds, the tavern, and the trading post to rest for the journey on to Winston and Salem. Today, in the emerging Yadkin Valley wine region, Lewisville is a community-oriented village surrounding a town square with plentiful sidewalks, parks, churches, small businesses, schools, and a public library.

On May 22, 1931, the American National Red Cross issued its second charter for a life preserving organization to the Daytona Beach Red Cross Life Saving Corps. Composed of 30 young men aged 17 to 26 and trained in lifesaving and first aid, this volunteer corps protected 3 miles of beach, compiling daily records of the number of bathers, weather, first aid, and rescues. The neighboring communities of Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach maintained their own lifesaving units, and Volusia County monitored the remaining coastline. By 1972, these four corps had united, and the Volusia County Beach Patrol became one of the nation's most highly trained surf lifesaving rescue units. Protecting 47 continuous miles of Atlantic coastline, which holds the dubious honor of the shark bite capital of the world, the Volusia County Beach Patrol welcomes 10 million visitors and performs an average of 3,000 rescues annually.

Filipinos arrived in the Washington, D.C., area shortly after 1900 upon the annexation of the Philippines to the United States. These new settlers included students, soldiers, seamen, and laborers. Within four decades, they became permanent residents, military servicemen, government workers, and community leaders. Although numerous Filipinos now live in the area, little is known about the founders of the Filipino communities. In 1977, at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, 165 people died in a tragic fire. Covered by news outlets across the country, many still associate tragedy with this popular entertainment destination. The club's legacy, however, stretches back to the 1950s, when it was known as the Beverly Hills Country Club. Folks from across the nation came here to see the best shows in town and to gamble in the casino. Considered the finest nightclub in the Cincinnati area, it showcased lavish entertainment at a time when television and rock and roll were still in their infancy. Beverly Hills presented all of the day's top entertainers: Liberace, Milton Berle, Carol Channing, Mel Torme, Jimmy Durante, Tony Bennett, and a galaxy of other world-famous headliners. This book reveals a host of those wonderful and diverse performers as they prepare backstage for their shows, chat with musicians, and strike poses for the camera. Featuring photographs taken by Earl W. Clark, who played saxophone in the Beverly Hills house band from 1951 to 1962, Images of America: Beverly Hills Country Club includes hundreds of the talented artists who graced the stage, as well as the crowds who saw them perform.

Since the arrival of Spanish explorers, colonists, and missionaries in the early 1500s, Liberty County has been a microcosm of American history. Later settled by Puritans in the mid-1700s, this coastal community nestled midway between Savannah and Darien was honored with the name "Liberty" for providing two of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence. The air age in Huntsville began more than a century ago with Will Quick's design and construction of a flying machine, which he demonstrated in 1908 for patenting and manufacture. The space age began in Huntsville a half century later with the advent of Wernher Von Braun's Redstone Jupiter C rocket, which launched America's first satellite, Explorer 1, into orbit in 1958. A decade later, Huntsville was at the epicenter of the greatest technological achievement of the 20th century as the Saturn V rocket propelled humankind to the moon. Nowhere in the world is the century's rapid advance of air and space technology more apparent than in Huntsville. This unique evolution of flying machines and space vehicles unfolds in this pictorial documentary, including the dramatic growth of the research facilities and community infrastructure that produced these remarkable inventions.

The Wekiva River makes up some of the best protected waters in the state with laws designed for its preservation, as it is recognized as a regional "jewel" and a resource worth saving in public trust as parks, preserves, and forests. Today visitors who paddle, boat, and hike here discover a sanctuary that seems unchanged since its earliest history, when ancient tribes piled fresh water shells, sand, bone, and pot shards to create midden mounds, and when Clay Springs and other early settlements helped draw river traffic and railroads hauled out its forest products. In 1811, William Thomas built a tavern at the one busy site where the Albany and Hartford Turnpike intersected the Lebanon and Hudson Turnpike, and the village of Chatham was born. A store catering to stagecoach passengers soon followed in 1815. By 1850, the Hudson and Berkshire Railroad and the Western Railroad were established within sight of the tavern's central square. Shortly thereafter, Solomon Crandell's store and post office on the main street was receiving customers' mail addressed to Chatham Four Corners. There was a new school, three hotels, two churches, a gristmill, a foundry, several retail stores, two publications, and a village doctor. The Columbia Bank was founded in 1859 in response to the volume of trade and manufacturing in the village. Paper mills, iron foundries, wagon manufacturers, shirt factories, agriculture, and freight train service all helped to propel the development of the village of Chatham.
