Children were often badly treated in the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth - that's no surprise. Those who were lucky enough to go to school had their wildness beaten out of them by their school masters. That was the way to force learning into their heads. Most boys laboured on the farm from seven years old and the girls would do household crafts or work as the most junior of maid-servants in the richer households. In London, they might earn a few pennies by working as errand boys or selling watercress, matches, sprats or oysters on the street. Some became shoeblacks, lamplighters, chimney sweeps or deckhands. Life was not easy for them. It's more shocking that the Queen herself had a hand in the mistreatment of children. She was well known for her love of music. She played the virginals and lute and claimed to have composed dance music. As a singer herself in an age when the arts were enjoying a new dawn it is perhaps not particularly astonishing that she should want to set up a first-class choir to sing for her in the Chapels Royal. What strikes a harsher note is that, by her edict of 1597, she gave permission for agents of hers to take children from wherever in England they happened to be and to have them trained for her in the art and science of music and singing. Some of the men she appointed were prepared to use strong-arm tactics to pounce on their victims and snatch them from their homes. Knowing how the Queen loved the theatre these predators thought to make money for themselves by putting their young choristers on the stage. On the way to his London school in December, 1600, this was the fate that overtook Thomas Carlton. He was doubly shocked to be captured as a chorister because he had never thought of himself as a musician. Sir Henry Carlton, once he discovered where Thomas was and who had snatched him, contacted friends of his in high places. They arranged for the kidnappers to be charged and tried in the Star Chamber. The outcome of the trial did not please Thomas at all. The Queen's Pawns is about the way his fate prompted him to become involved in bringing justice to those who could not fight for their rights as he could.

A day in the life of a student nurse, what could possibly go wrong? If you're training to be a nurse right now, or just fancy an insight into what they do, read this book. It will tell you that sleepless nights from constant worrying is absolutely normal. To make mistakes and want the ground to swallow you up then get over them; this is normal. To eat and drink very little all day and suffer with constipation; this is, yes you guessed it: normal. No one tells you anything when you sign up. In fact, they forget to tell you very important details that actually make you believe you are losing your mind. Delirium is such a thing. But what will come out of this is a degree in nursing, followed by a registration which will give you the entitlement to being called a registered nurse-adults or children's depends on what you chose. For me it's an adult registered nurse. Don't get overly excited you will have to pay £120 every year to have it renewed. You will need to be in a union of some sort, which equals more cost. On a lighter note the memories, the friendships and the experiences you receive, nursing profession: I love you.

Welcome to My Fabulous Sh*tshow embraces the power of being yourself and yielding your sword of soul to conquer the battlefield that is life as a woman and a mother. It pays tribute to the amazing super troopers in your life who not only love and support you but are in the trenches just in case you call for backup. They will catch you, prop you up and send you back out to battle in your gorgeous stilettos! Armed with eyelash and hair extensions plus a splash of impatience that only a single woman can have whilst juggling kids and a career, this book takes delight in showcasing how being in your mid-40s can also mean that you are in your prime time and life is only just beginning. Learn how self-discovery is a journey for the brave or for those who like to cringe. Was it through trying to work out a brand after being described as Bridget Jones meets Carrie Bradshaw? Is it from becoming a newly appointed student of the universe (with Google as a professor) or testing the philosophies of drama and love or even seeking answers about parallel universes? Perhaps it was trying to find answers from undertaking a sexual energy cleanse, rebuilding an 'empire' after having a squashed heart or is it the struggle to date men of the same age. This fabulous sh*tshow takes a humorous and curious look at living beyond your expectations and at how things in life just happen as they are supposed to.

In addition, she is also unravelling a family legend. In another spring, 410 years past, Spain prepares the greatest naval fleet ever assembled. In 1588s Celtic Ireland, a 15 year old pagan girl is an apprentice seamstress earning her way and experiencing history's surprises as a shipwrecked, Spanish Soldier is washed ashore on a local Irish beach. "The truth must become a legend to survive," it has been said. Did any Armada shipwrecked survivors leave any descendants in Ireland? Quite possibly. What history has downplayed, due to a collective Irish guilt, may indeed be the truth. Religion, magick and politics intertwine in this tale, as the omission of the historical truths are finally revealed. A 16th century event has echoes to our current era, when history is hijacked by the victors. Yet, eventually, "The truth will out." Even if that truth arrives centuries later.
