PAROUSIA (, parousia) is a Greek term meaning 'presence' or 'arrival.' Because it is used as a technical term referring to the return of Christ in glory, its more immediate, existential impact is often overlooked. Presence restores the epiphanic power of Parousia, opening us to the Eternal Now of a divine Fulness (Plrma) that is not yet completely revealed. Presence is a simple, immediately accessible entrée into what metaphysicians and theologians call the Mystery of 'God.' Presence is not identical with 'God' - what is? Yet Presence is that sophianic handmaid of 'God' - Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) - who was 'created at the beginning of God's work' and who rejoices in God's created world and delights in the human race (Prv. 8:22- 31). Presence is the Sapientia of 'God', providing us with a taste of divine bliss otherwise inaccessible to the human heart (cf. 1 Cor. 2:9).I offer this book as an invitation for you to enter more deeply into the mystery of Presence where you may experience the Parousia of God.

This children's book tells the story of a boy named Ish who is just turning nine. The night before his birthday, he is startled awake when his dad comes to check on him. After his dad leaves, Ish sneaks out to look in the closet and sees the box that holds his birthday present, a fishing pole. When he goes back to sleep, he dreams about fishing and using wiggly worms as bait. He wishes himself in place of the fish, and at the same time, the fish wishes he was fishing like the boy. The worm, meanwhile, cries because he doesn't want to be eaten. The water feels sorry the worm and rises up; soon Ish is on the hook in the water, the fish is on the riverbank, and the worm has slipped free. Ish cries for help-and then wakes up, realizing it was only a horrible dream. When he goes downstairs, his parents are waiting with a birthday cake and his present. But he isn't excited about fishing anymore. He tells his dad why, and they have an important conversation about Jesus. Later Ish goes fishing with his friends Hix and Bubba, and he tells them what he learned.Young readers will find the narrative and characters interesting and relatable, and they'll appreciate the valuable message the book has to offer.

A man of destiny, Moses was born to lead a nation through impossible situations, despite not starting his primary mission for eighty years. Leaders and leadership are found everywhere, past and present. There are great examples everywhere you look, if you know what to look for. There are differences as well as commonalities in all leaders that we study. Moses is a phenomenal example to learn from. He is one of the most-mentioned characters in the Old and New Testaments. God held Moses in the highest regard, over all other prophets, and he was the only prophet to speak to God face-to-face. Born in the most inauspicious of environments, under a death warrant by Pharaoh, raised as an Egyptian for his first forty years. Then Moses escaped to the furnace of the Midian wilderness where I believe his leadership, character, and humility were honed for his God-given mission that would last the rest of his lifetime. His final forty years was as unquestioned leader of the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage to the precipice of the promised land. Studying the inspired leadership lessons of a man who lived one hundred and twenty years is as formidable as it is thrilling. This journey will be enlightening, exciting, and energizing.

NEXT TO ROMANS, NO OTHER WRITING has impacted the shape of reformed theology more than Paul's letter to the Galatians. So important was the letter that Luther affectionately referred to it as his Katie von Bora - the name of his wife, stating that in some ways he was married to the letter as well.Like Romans, Galatians is rooted in Paul's conviction that through the resurrection of Jesus, God's new creation has burst in upon the old with redeeming power and vindication for those made part of Christ's body by faith.Unlike Romans however, Galatians isn't primarily an exposition on the gospel or how we get saved. Rather, what is really at issue is the inclusion of all people in the single, multi-ethnic family of God. Who is in and who is out? Who belongs? And on what basis? These are the real issues being debated by the churches to whom Paul is writing.Paul's answer is that men and women are made part of the community of Christ by faith alone and not works of the Law. Followers of Jesus, no matter what their ethnic or moral background is, are incorporated into the family of God by the grace and action of God alone, and not by outward marks of Jewish identity. In Galatians: A Commentary, pastor and author Marc Simon offers a verse by verse exposition of Galatians which is at once accessible to scholars, pastors, and students alike.

"Family is not an important thing. It is everything." This is the mantra of the Gurin family until a dark secret from the past is revealed driving their relationships to the crossroads of tragedy. While having their usual family dinner, without warning, Sophie brutally assaults Frank, her husband. Her violent behavior is witnessed by her two daughters, Addie, six and Mary, eight, and her mother, Irina, an immigrant from Poznan, Poland. Committed to a hospital, Sophie delves into painful flashbacks and dreams that involve a faceless man abusing a child. It isn't until some months later that she discovers through therapy that the little girl is her. Her shame about being abused forces her to keep it a secret from her family. The same is true for the humiliation she suffers about being a patient in a psychiatric unit for nearly a year. Sophie concocts a risky fictional account explaining her breakdown and hospitalization and demands that her mother and husband participate in this deception because she's fearful the truth would forever change the love her daughters feel for her. Told from multiple points of view, the story takes place in Chicago in 1965, and spans twenty years. Delving into the relationships of the Gurin women as mothers and daughters, the reader experiences the tender undersides of their love as well as the sharp edges which nearly destroy them. The heart of this book touches on the genuine compassion mothers and daughters need to be capable of when their disappointments go beyond what appears to be unforgivable.
