    Innumerable books have been written on declarer play. Far less attention has been paid by bridge writers to defense, which is the weakest part of most players' game. This book presents a series of problems in defensive play, the central theme being active versus passive defense. This problem may start with the opening lead, arise at Trick Two, or be a decision later during the play of the hand. Going 'active' when one should have remained 'passive' and vice versa is probably the most common defensive error players make, allowing contracts to slip thru. Some of the deals shown are more difficult than others, but they all contain a principle that can be applied in similar situations. After working on these problems and answers, the reader will find his defensive skills are enormously improved.

    Abbot Andre Louf said that, when a person decides to get serious about the spiritual life, s/he should acquire a spiritual director. Wayne Proudfoot argued that the form of religious experience depends upon the tradition in which it is perceived. Georges Bataille searched out the meaning of his own intense inner experience in non-traditional ways. This book seeks to follow the meaning of traditional measures of the spiritual life learned through the experience of the author once his spiritual life decided to choose him.

    One of my greatest rewards is to bring a smile to a child's face. They love to see farm animals and reading the nursery rhymes. As a small child when I would spend my summers in Southern Illinois, I loved the farm animals that were in the area. All the farmer that I would see were farmers of color. With this book, I decided to put a farmer of color for my illustrations so that little children of color could assimilate with the farmer in this book. This old-time classic picture book showcasing all the animals that "e;Old MacDonald"e; has to take care of will help some children learn the sounds of one of his seven animals. The example, this book offers, will give my grandchildren and your child a better understanding of how kindness to animals can rank as a moral virtue in every society. With the charming animal illustrations and the all so familiar heart-warming nursery rhyme, this book will surely bring a smile to some children's face.

    My wife, Karen and I, (Karen has passed away) had four children and 14 grandchildren. The birth of those grandchildren brought great joy to us and motivated me to create a story upon the birth of the first eight grandchildren, the first in 1986 and the last in 1998. Each chapter lists chronologically the names of these eight grandchildren. One of the stories was created as I was driving one night from a YMCA job interview in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Kokomo, Indiana, where I served as CEO. This book contains Christmas stories I created for children to enjoy. It begins with Santa's dog who gets lost and must be found so he can accompany Santa on his trip. Other unique characters are introduced, the Blue Angel, Miss Frilly Fox, a little boy named Bo who could fly, the walking trees, how snow began, the batmasters Desmo and his brother Rufus, the twin girls I and Y and many more. My grandchildren took great pleasure from reading their stories and I'm hoping to instill imaginative minds in others. Older children will enjoy reading the stories themselves and younger children having them read to them. The stories provide the children with something to think about. Many people said I should put these stories in a book, and so I did!

    Insight, challenge, and life application. This is a book for men to be rallied, raised up, and prepared to live in a culture where Christ is first and foremost, not a secondary consideration. This devotional is intended to be a quick but profound read for the man, husband, and father who prioritizes kingdom principles over culture in everything he does. It uses Scripture to speak to our daily existence, occupations, and ambitions. Real men understand and appreciate authority, and there is an authority over our lives that speaks "e;louder"e; than the sports analysts, newscasters, and social media gurus of our day: that authority is the Word of God. Refreshingly written with compassion, grace, and inspiration, this is a book that will speak to any man who wants more of Christ and wants Christ to have more of him. If that is you, pick up this book and start digesting the principles contained therein. Consider what is being said and admonish yourself first, then find another man to admonish. Men want to be inspired and really welcome the challenge when it is done with integrity and pure motivation. If there is a man in your life whom you sincerely care about, pick up this devotional for him, place it in his hands, and prayerfully await for change in his heart. God's Word will not return void; it is life and spirit. These pages contain the power to bring about scriptural principles into action. GO.AHEAD!

    Happy Valentine's DayI used to sit in my room and think to myself about everything untamable in my life. Refusing to let anybody who cared about me to help me maintain balance and peace of mind, I turned to a journal on my nightstand. For over two years I wrote down every emotion that was too chaotic or complicated to express, and planned on showing no one. After pages and pages of ink-filled lines, I realized that I wanted my words to be absorbed, not hidden away on a bedroom shelf, as if I were still as ashamed of them as I once was. Hurt, feel, breath, learn, grow. It's all part of the plan.

    This book describes several vital principles of what constitutes an entrepreneurial culture. The most important principle of an entrepreneurial culture is that entrepreneurship is for everyone, and people can assume the economic function of the entrepreneur easier than ever before in human history. Further, the market institutions allow everyone to participate in the marketplace. Human interaction and cooperation are the essences of entrepreneurship carried out in the marketplace. This book casts light on the most critical fact: entrepreneurship is for the few, the wealthy, or the lucky. This book debunks those narratives by explaining that entrepreneurship can be for anybody-for real people in the real world. Entrepreneurship is the cornerstone for the making of any society; it is within human nature to cooperate and do good through the marketplace mechanisms. An entrepreneurial culture grows out of the act of human cooperation.

    Fire, Flint and Faith is a coherent and holistic - but also entertaining - journey through the history of the universe. Following on other works by the author which analyze otherwise unexplainable jumps in the history of our planet, this book focuses on the so-called "e;Great Leap Forward"e; that scientists believe connected our species to our animal ancestors. Using history, science and logic, the author convincingly debunks the latest in a scientific materialism, which argues that "e;only matter matters."e; Instead, the author uses recent scientic discoveries and common sense to suggest that humans are a marvelous combination of body, mind and spirit. Told in a conversational style that any adult can comprehend, the book goes on to conclude that humans are a wonderful combination of body, mind and spirit. In the process, it debunks the notion that "e;only matter matters,"e; as taught by some modern academicians.

    The two tales portray some of the problems facing many American families: bipolar bosses, unemployment, cancer, the seemingly unending hustle for money, and adolescent children coping with the meaning of the puzzling adult world. In '67 Ford Mustangs: The Long Drives, the unemployed protagonist undergoes three journeys, including a literal trip to Hell and back. As he scours the country for '67 Mustangs to satisfy the fancies of an eccentric collector, he unintentionally comes across an epiphany. Likewise, in The Oracle of Here, the main character hears or thinks he hears an enigmatic message on his annual trip into the woods. He treasures a relic of this experience and turns to it for answers as he deals with a demanding boss, a potential involvement with an international prostitution ring, his wife facing cancer treatments, his children uncertain of where they are going and who they are.

    This book is a second sequel to my previous book, SIX BIBLE STORIES THAT NEVER HAPPENED...but maybe could have to complete the trilogy of BIBLE STORIES. It takes additional underdeveloped characters of the New Testament and presents imagined stories about them woven into the Biblical narrative. "e;Malchus and Photine"e; is a coming-to-faith story. Malchus' loses his ear to Simon Peter's sword and Photine meets Jesus at Jacob's well. These are transformational moments leading to struggle and salvation. "e;Didymus"e; is the story of the Apostle Thomas and his identical twin brother,Tamir, who learn the meaning of sacrificial love through doubt and conflict. "e;Joanna"e; is a story about Jewish aristocrats who become disgusted with their rich and powerful lives and come to know that Jesus is "e;the way and the truth and the life."e;

    The book has a very large scope, all creatures for all time; snowball earth, evolution of life forms, extinction events; and through tribal man, civilized man, and modern man. The book is not about solutions, but about choices. More than history, it covers why things happened, what it meant at the time and what it might mean in the future. It is a fun book looking at some events in a new way. i.e.. "e;The success of capitalism and free markets has resulted, as it must, in inequalities...which go against the man's millions of years of Trible living and preference for equal outcomes.

    Miss Middleton's scores are, indeed, a frozen moment in time which prove the existence in 1913 and 1914 of "e;automatic"e; phonic decoding of print as opposed to "e;conscious"e; psycholinguistic decoding of print. The scores also prove that automatic decoding does result from the phonic "e;sound"e; method to teach reading, since that is how Miss Middleton's children learned to read. However, the "e;reading experts"e; in 1914 and after must have misinterpreted scores like Miss Middleton's wildly fluctuating scores, which obviously were the result of freely wandering attention, by concluding instead that the scores had "e;proved"e; that the "e;sound"e; method had failed. The truth is that such low "e;reading comprehension"e; scores on "e;silent reading comprehension"e; tests for phonic-trained classes suggest the presence of healthy automatic conditioned reflexes in reading. Such scores may result from the Miss Middleton Effect of voluntarily wandering attention while reading automatically. Her children simply did not bother to pay attention to what they were reading automatically, but could have done so if they felt like it. Yet the inferior deaf-mute "e;sight-word"e; method forces children's attention to "e;meaning"e; or they cannot read at all. They may therefore score higher on simple "e;reading comprehension tests"e;, but far, far worse on spelling and on reading correctly the actual words on the page.
