  • von Geoffrey D'Ombrain

This book began as an account written during my long journey in 2011 around Ireland with a visit to Berlin. Later, stories from my two previous journeys, 2009 and 2010 were added, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany and England. The book tells of extraordinary meetings with people, unbelievable coincidences and my being welcomed to perform Irish music, improvise on flutes and whistles and play with great bands. The magic also occurred in Berlin and a reader's imagination will be stretched to embrace some of the experiences I am able to relate. In my first paragraph I speak of miracles, defining such, "e;as an act of selfless kindness, or an event that is such a coincidence, as to be hard to believe"e;. Just imagine, the River Boyne flows next to the Bounty Bar (Trim) where I attracted the attention of a band waiting to drive to a late night "e;gig"e;. I sang "e;Red is the Rose"e;, which highlights the River Boyne and the band invited me to perform with them at their "e;gig"e; and in particular to sing that song. "e;Clear is the water"e; comes from the chorus of that song. When I first performed for an hour in the Bounty Bar I had no idea that it was voted the best pub in Ireland for music ( 2003) and had hanging on the wall, just above where I sang, a ship's wheel, a thank you gift to Billy Wilson, the publican, from "e;The Dubliners"e;.

So many stories have come down to me about my remarkable family going right back to escaping from France in an open boat in 1572. There was a great-grandfather who was City Surveyor of the Melbourne Corporation and a remarkable hero, Sir James D'Ombrain, who refused to follow Westminster orders and delivered grain, aboard the revenue cruisers, to the starving in Ireland during the potato famine. Then at age ninety I am blessed with a clear memory going right back to the days when I was but three years old. I have so many memories I wish to share. Some are amusing and some hard to believe. There are simple stories that bring life to many family members I have known, past and present. A love of the sea and craft that sail upon it is also woven through the text. I tell stories of friends, and people whose contributions to society should not be forgotten. I tell the story of how I came to establish a ground-breaking tertiary music education program. I share my reflections on war, religion and politics and tell some amazing tales of closer contact with our remarkable First Nations' Australians. Our family has long displayed a passion for botanical and zoological pursuits. It is appropriate that I conclude the book with a few unbelievable stories about my encounters with birds. In all my stories I am "e;somewhere in the middle"e; closely watching life's cavalcade.

  • von Andrew Patterson

Andrew Patterson looks back at his life growing up in suburban Brisbane and his career as a civil engineer in this memoir. Born during World War II, he grew up in a rented house in Doomben a short distance from the southern end of Brisbane's main Eagle Farm Aerodrome-not a particularly safe place to live during wartime. Many family members and friends used their home as a staging post on their way north to war. His family life was sometimes odd, with his father always urging him to do well in school-or else he would turn him and his brother, Gavin, into "e;bloody little Bank Johnnies."e; He said it in such a disparaging way that it sounded like this would be the worst punishment they could possibly suffer. He also recalls his array of experiences as a civil engineer working in Queensland and other projects throughout the world. Join the author as he shares a firsthand account of growing up in Queensland, his passion for sailing and flying, and his fascinating life as an engineer.

We live each day completely unaware of the person next to us and what events have helped shape that person's life. Each one of us over time begin to carve out our individual pathways and this path then becomes our life. The Author of this book decided to share some of his greatest mistakes and successes throughout his life so far. Some of his journeys took him around the world and found him in hot water on numerous occasions. His journeys through life have not always been a smooth road by any means. He has made plenty of mistakes and freely admits his shortfalls in the book and decided to share some of the highs and lows of the path he has travelled down. Some of the tales he shares will bring a smile to your face, a gasp and even a tear or two perhaps. They are simply events that happened to him and the stories share how he had to respond as a simple human being making his way through life when faced with personal challenges. He is a well-worn man who learned a lot the hard way and yet its those very rough roads that help create the writer who now shares his life with you throughout these pages. "e;If someone can avoid one of the mistakes I have made by reading where I went wrong or feels the confidence to rush in and help because they read a story where things went right then the stories I share have all been worthwhile"e;. ~Luke Way~

    27,00 €

This is a diary written from a mini nursing home during the initial COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne, Australia. Mark Miljons-Rostoks offers a personal, reflective, and emotional account of a young quadriplegic man searching for meaning amid the global pandemic. He details the realities of life in care and how he plans to re-establish an inspiring life. It's one massive vent-fest. A rare glimpse is given into a life that not many people know about, understand or can even imagine. He does this by undertaking a writing challenge that explores almost every facet of his life intimately. He also reflects on his life highlights prior to illness, fumbles his way through understanding some personal dilemmas in the present, then explores his ambitions as he plans for a brighter future when quarantine lifts. The author also recalls how he became quadriplegic after getting sick during a backpacking holiday to Europe, and how despite not being able to move his limbs he is determined that he was put here to thrive-not survive. There are highs and lows, obscure ideas and confessions, revelations and humorous accounts, and blimey even some shocking truths exposed. But above all, a raw, robust, resilient human spirit shines through in the face of adversity.
