  • von Jr Raymond Valinoti
    34,00 €

In the first few years of the Great Depression, before the Production Code was rigidly enforced in 1934, Hollywood took advantage of its laxity, producing racy and violent films that titillated filmgoers and outraged reformers. The American horror genre blossomed during this time and the studios exploited its lurid possibilities. The results were both shocking and controversial. Some of these films remain unsettling today. Hollywood's Pre-Code Horrors 1931-1934 appraises all of these films, from Dracula (1931), which spearheaded the American horror market, to The Black Cat (1934), the last chiller released before the strengthening of the Code. Each film is thoroughly analyzed, not only in its insinuations and/or portrayals of sex and violence, but in the context of the era in which it was made and the reactions of critics and filmgoers during this time. Raymond Valinoti, Jr. is a resident of Berkeley Heights, NJ. He has a Master's in Library Science from Rutgers University and is a freelance researcher. He is also the author of Another Nice Mess: The Laurel and Hardy Story. His articles on films have been published in the magazines Midnight Marquee and Films of the Golden Age.

    von Richard Roat
    43,00 €

  • - Robert Taylor, Hollywood & Communism (Hardback)
    von Linda Alexander
    49,00 €

Publicity men dubbed him "The Man with the Perfect Profile," yet the soul behind that silhouette belonged to a renowned yet reluctant witness to American history and Hollywood evolution. The battle between his tinseled image and his true identity broiled into an intriguing transformation of flesh and blood into fable and ballyhoo. Explore his meteoric rise from naive, small-town Nebraska boy to a celluloid heartthrob known around the world. His signature roles include Magnificent Obsession (1935) with Irene Dunn and Camille (1936) with Greta Garbo, and appearances with Vivien Leigh in A Yank at Oxford (1938) and Waterloo Bridge (1940), Bataan (1943), and Ivanhoe (1952) with Elizabeth Taylor. From 1959 to 1962, he starred in the ABC series The Detectives, and he hosted Death Valley Days (1966-1969). Discover his sheltered, almost emasculating childhood, his cursed marriage to Barbara Stanwyck, his blessed marriage to Ursula Thiess, and his discreet but intense love affairs with beauties such as Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, and Yvonne DeCarlo. During World War Two, he served in the United States Naval Air Corps as a flight instructor and as an actor in instructional films. Witness him hesitantly responding to a subpoena in 1947 to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings on Communism in American Films. Observe how he reluctantly ventured into early television yet enjoyed an unexpected, widespread success. Reluctant Witness: Robert Taylor, Hollywood, & Communism draws you into the unfolding drama of a cinema icon and an unwilling yet dynamic spectator to the American dream.

"A marvelously entertaining memoir from a uniquely talented artist in the theatre and movies."- Angela Lansbury "Carleton Carpenter has led many lives, before and after he duetted on 'Aba Daba Honeymoon'. I'm so glad he has chosen to share those lives with us in this wonderful new book."- Leonard Maltin "At the movies, Carleton Carpenter was the boyish equivalent of an all-American Fourth of July picnic-wholesome, delightful, and utterly without pretense. The story of his life is equally likeable-candid, funny, and full of joy. For anyone who misses the golden days of Broadway and Hollywood, he shares his show business memories without artifice, phony sentimentality, or any of the usual axes to grind. This book puts a smile on your face and keeps it there."- Rex Reed At one time or another, Carleton Carpenter has been a bellhop, professional magician, circus clown, church organist, barroom piano player, carny pitchman, commercial spokesman, Navy Seabee, screenwriter, ASCAP composer and lyricist, cabaret singer, vaudeville performer, recording artist, and actor. He's appeared in more than 20 New York stage productions, countless tours around the country, thousands of TV and radio shows, and two dozen films, mostly for MGM-among them such classics as Father of the Bride, Summer Stock, Three Little Words, Lost Boundaries, Fearless Fagan, and Two Weeks With Love. His recordings of "Aba Daba Honeymoon" and "Row, Row, Row" (both with Debbie Reynolds), earned him two Gold Records.

  • von Julia Benjamin
    36,00 €

"Julia's book will make you both laugh and cry. It's filled with wonderful insights about what Hollywood was like for a child actor who started working professionally when she was 6 and continued right on into adulthood. Julia was talented enough to be hand-picked by Shirley Booth to play Susie Baxter in the fifth and final season of Hazel. Her successful career continued into her young adult years. But then something tragic happened to Julia that would change her life forever. Her whole story is here - the good, the bad, the terrifying, and the eventual recovery. Julia Benjamin is a survivor, and now for the first time, she shares her life with everyone in one of the most emotional books ever written." Stu Shostak, TV Historian "I first met Julia Benjamin at Columbia Pictures when she signed on to the popular Hazel television series. She was, then and now, adorable. When A Minor Consideration started up in the early 90's Julia came back into my life as she began her courageous recovery from a vicious dog attack on Valentine's Day. Julia's will to bravely face Life's ups and downs is remarkable." Paul Petersen
