"Julia's book will make you both laugh and cry. It's filled with wonderful insights about what Hollywood was like for a child actor who started working professionally when she was 6 and continued right on into adulthood. Julia was talented enough to be hand-picked by Shirley Booth to play Susie Baxter in the fifth and final season of Hazel. Her successful career continued into her young adult years. But then something tragic happened to Julia that would change her life forever. Her whole story is here - the good, the bad, the terrifying, and the eventual recovery. Julia Benjamin is a survivor, and now for the first time, she shares her life with everyone in one of the most emotional books ever written." Stu Shostak, TV Historian "I first met Julia Benjamin at Columbia Pictures when she signed on to the popular Hazel television series. She was, then and now, adorable. When A Minor Consideration started up in the early 90's Julia came back into my life as she began her courageous recovery from a vicious dog attack on Valentine's Day. Julia's will to bravely face Life's ups and downs is remarkable." Paul Petersen

    von Jonathan Etter

"When a wolf is chasing your sleigh, throw him a raisin cookie, but don't stop to bake a cake." This and other famous "Polish proverbs" were often spoken by George Peppard as Thomas Banacek, a detective solving seemingly impossible thefts, in the NBC Mystery Movie series, Banacek (1972-1974). Costars Murray Matheson and Christine Belford helped propel the series into brief but blazing popularity. A Who's Who of 1970s stars rounded out the stories with colorful characters, such as Broderick Crawford, Margot Kidder, Stefanie Powers, Brenda Vaccaro, Penny Fuller, Stella Stevens, Anne Francis, Sterling Hayden, Nancy Olson, Anne Baxter, Victoria Principal, Cesar Romero, Bert Convy, Sue Ane Langdon, and Victor Jory. In There's An Old Polish Proverb That Says, "BANACEK," television historian Jonathan Etter profiles series star George Peppard, and he also brushes back the sands of time to reveal the history of the locked-room, impossible mystery genre. A guide to all 17 thrilling episodes plus commentary from Executive Producer George Eckstein uncovers where and how he and his associates found an inspired twist to time-honored mystery formula. You discover the importance the series placed on numbers and the matching of numbers in the chapter entitled "Decoding Banacek." Series devotees will have considerable opportunity to test their powers of observation and concentration with the 112 Banacek challenges presented in the episode guide (7 challenges apiece for each of the 16 90-minute episodes). Illustrated with dozens of photos from series episodes and George Peppard films. About the author: television historian Jonathan Etter obtained a B.A. in History from Wright State University. His expertise has resulted in the publication of Quinn Martin, Producer and Gangway, Lord! (The) Here Come the Brides Book.

The Sexiest Starship AliveIt's how People Magazine would crown the Enterprise's crew if the pop culture stalwart warped into the 23rd century. Captain Kirk's randy reputation old, intergalactic news? Thankfully, this isn't a 'How to Score' guide penned by J.T.K. It's no tell-all memoir to shock and awe, nor cosmic celebrity sex tape full of space babes. Star Trek Sex deals tastefully in the romantically loaded tales of Gene Roddenberry's landmark TV show. And though William Shatner's Kirk is a front and center player, his crew, Spock, Scotty, Uhura, McCoy, Sulu and Chekov, also get a piece of the action. To explore strange new worlds... To seek out new life...Star Trek Sex covers the iconic classic, then warps beyond to Star Trek: Into Darkness and the hip satire of Saturday Night Live, Family Guy and the legendary Howard Stern. It highlights the sexually charged moments of Roddenberry's 'Wagon Train To The Stars' and focuses on those complex themes which helped establish Star Trek as a global Hollywood franchise. At age 4, Will Stape watched Star Trek before he knew the difference between a phaser and a taser. He's one of a handful of freelance writers to sell to Star Trek: The Next Generation. His episode, 'Homeward', with Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), premiered in the Emmy Award winning show's last season. A year later, he sold to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and his script, 'Charity', became 'Prophet Motive' with Wallace Shawn star of The Princess Bride.Stape pitched to Star Trek: Voyager, Deep Space Nine and met with writer/producer Michael Piller for Stephen King's The Dead Zone. He's developed TV show docudramas and his articles appear in Sci-Fi Pulse, Airlock Alpha, McCall's Quilter's Home, Hudson Reporter, Bayonne Style, Shine, OMG! and Yahoo! News. He's owned phasers, but never a taser.

  • von Scott O'Brien

Bette Davis answered, "George Brent" whenever asked to name her favorite co-star. Her longtime crush on the actor (they teamed in eleven films) culminated in an off-screen affair while filming Dark Victory (1939) for which she won an Oscar nomination and Brent gave what many consider his "finest performance." Hollywood's top stars clamored to play opposite Brent, who infused his easy-going warmth into such blockbuster films as 42nd Street (1933). Before long, Garbo demanded that MGM cast him opposite her in The Painted Veil (1934). Brent was perfect foil for cinema's leading ladies: Ruth Chatterton (his second wife), Ginger Rogers, Loretta Young, Claudette Colbert, Barbara Stanwyck, Myrna Loy, Kay Francis, Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, Hedy Lamarr, Merle Oberon, and Ann Sheridan (his fourth wife). Not to be pigeonholed Brent's perfection as the dissipated Englishman in The Rains Came (1939) and surprise turn as the heavy in The Spiral Staircase (1946) fueled the longevity of his career. The personal life of George Brent remained undercover. Upon signing with Warner Bros., studio publicity fabricated a back-story for Brent: a graduate of Dublin University (he dropped out of school at 16); a player in the Abbey Theatre (for which no record exists); a dead mother (who was very much alive); and, a dispatcher for Michael Collins during the Irish Revolution (this . . . was true). Brent's biography offers a fascinating look into the life of Hollywood's elusive lone wolf. Scott O'Brien, whose biography on Ruth Chatterton made The Huffington Post's "Best Film Books of 2013," abetted by Irish filmmaker Brian Reddin, sheds new light on Ireland's gift to Hollywood and its leading ladies: George Brent. (Foreword by Wesleyan University's Chair of Film Studies, Jeanine Basinger.) 331 pages with 125 illustrations capture the glamour and private world of Hollywood's Golden Age.

Unheard and unseen for over seventy years, Lady of the Press is an intriguing, entertaining West Coast CBS radio show from 1944 and 1945. The story follows newspaper reporter Sandra Martin, a modern woman trying to balance her personal life with her working world, as she is falsely tagged by police as a Person of Interest in a grisly murder. Sandra Martin is played by Janet Waldo, went on to fame as the voice of Corliss Archer, Judy Jetson, Penelope Pitstop, and many other characters. The big-city newspaper setting gave the 15-minute daily serial more energy than typical radio soaps. ¿¿This volume reprints for the first time the scripts from two dozen original episodes from the series complete with edits and cuts made by the cast and crew. These Lady of the Press scripts open a window into the World War II home front and the lives people led. * * * * * * *¿About the Generic Radio Workshop: This loose-knit group of radio artists have been performing vintage radio shows in the North Texas area longer than the Golden Age of Radio existed. ¿I am in awe! Robert Kenny¿s analysis is quite brilliant, and exactly what Lucan deserves after all these years.¿ Anthony Slide, author and film historian¿A timely, fascinating and unique study of an unjustly neglected star.¿ Jeffrey Richards, Emeritus Professor of Cultural History, University of Lancaster¿This is a book I devoured!¿ Richard Anthony Baker, author, broadcaster and former BBC News Assistant EditorDuring the 1930s and 40s, Arthur Lucan and his wife Kitty McShane were among the highest-paid and most admired variety artistes in Britain. They packed theatres throughout the land, and made a series of zany films with Arthur as the belligerent washerwoman Old Mother Riley, and Kitty as her flighty daughter. But fame and fortune went to Kitty¿s head, and offstage she made Arthur¿s life a misery; he collapsed and died¿in costume¿ in May 1954, one week before he was due to appear in court as a bankrupt. The story of the tears behind the Lucans¿ onstage laughter is told here in greater detail than ever before, demolishing old legends, re-assessing the comic genius of Arthur, and revealing the sadness of alcoholic Kitty, who lies today in a forgotten, unmarked grave. Dr. Robert V. Kenny was for many years a lecturer in French Language and Literature at the University of Leicester. He also directed the University Theatre and founded a chamber choir, Coro Nostro, which continues to flourish after his retirement. Throughout his career he produced and directed plays, operas and concerts, in addition to his teaching and research.
