  • von Slavoj (Birkbeck Institute for Humanities Zizek
    23,00 €

"We are all afraid that new dangers pose a threat to our hard-won freedoms, so what deserves attention is precisely the notion of freedom." The concept of freedom is deceptively simple - we think we understand it, but the moment we try and define it we encounter contradictions. In this new philosophical exploration, Slavoj Zizek argues that the experience of true, radical freedom is transient and fragile. Countering the idea of libertarian individualism, Zizek draws on philosophers including Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Timothy Morton, as well as the work of Kandinsky, Agatha Christie and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to examine the many facets of freedom and what we can learn from each of them. Tracing its connection to a variety of issues, including environmental breakdown, capitalism, and war, he shows through this entertaining and illuminating journey how a deeper understanding of freedom can offer hope in dark times.

  • von Peter Bellerby
    25,00 €

Peter Bellerby is an artisan globemaker whose company Bellerby & Co is one of only two handcrafted globemakers in the world. His team of craftspeople make exquisite celestial, terrestrial, historical and planetary globes for customers round the world. The story began when Peter attempted to find a special globe for his father's 80th birthday but couldn't. He decided to make one himself which took him on an extraordinary journey of rediscovering this lost craft. This beautiful and tactile book uses illustration, photography and narrative to tell the story of our globe and many different globes it has inspired. The chapters take us through the journey of how to build a globe and include vignettes on history, art history, astronomy and physics, as well as the day-to-day craftsmanship at the workshop itself. At the heart of the book are the globes themselves, or 'earth apples' as they were first known, whose 'overview effect' can't help but remind us of our individual insignificance.

Contemporary life is defined by excess. There must always be more, there is never enough. We need a surplus to what we need to be able to truly enjoy what we have. Slavoj Zizek's guide to surplus (and why it's enjoyable) begins by arguing that what is surplus to our needs is by its very nature unsubstantial and unnecessary. But, perversely, without this surplus, we wouldn't be able to enjoy, what is substantial and necessary. Indeed, without the surplus we wouldn't be able to identify what was the perfect amount. Is there any escape from the vicious cycle of surplus enjoyment or are we forever doomed to simply want more? Engaging with everything from The Joker film to pop songs and Thomas Aquinas to the history of pandemics, Zizek argues that recognising the society of enjoyment we live in for what it is can provide an explanation for the political impasses in which we find ourselves today. And if we begin, even a little bit, to recognise that the nuggets of 'enjoyment' we find in excess are as flimsy and futile, might we find a way out?

  • - By the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2021
    von Abdulrazak Gurnah
    13,00 €

**By the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2021**A "wonderful" (Maaza Mengiste) depiction of the life of an immigrant as he struggles to come to terms with the horror of his past and the meaning of his life in England.Dear Catherine, he began. Here I sit, making a meal out of asking you to dinner. I don't really know how to do it. To have cultural integrity, I would have to send my aunt to speak, discreetly, to your aunt, who would then speak to your mother, who would speak to my mother, who would speak to my father, who would speak to me and then approach your mother, who would then approach you. Daud has immigrated to England in the wake of political turmoil in his native Tanzania. For years, he has tried to hide his past. But when he meets Catherine, he is determined to recount for her the stories of his tragic upbringing, his flight to England, and the racism in his new homeland. Structured as a pilgrimage, one which leads Daud deep into the pain and beauty of the past and forward into a new understanding of his life in exile, Pilgrims Way is a captivating, lyrical story about identity, memory, and immigration.

A rigorous new analysis of America''s legendary ΓÇ£Big Week" air campaign which enabled the Allies to gain air superiority before D-Day.In the years before the outbreak of World War II, there was a general consensus among military strategists that strategic bombing had the ability to win wars. However, no-one could foresee the devastation that German radar-directed interceptors would inflict on large bomber formations. With the increasingly urgent need to eliminate these German fighter-aircraft prior to D-Day, a concerted two-phase effort, code-named ΓÇ£Operation Argument,ΓÇ¥ was launched by USSAF. Targeting aircraft factories with hundreds of heavy bombers escorted by the new long-range P-51 Mustang, the operation, now known as the ΓÇ£Big WeekΓÇ¥ campaign, was designed to destroy aircraft production on the ground and force the Luftwaffe into combat to defend these vital facilities, allowing the new escort fighters to take their toll on the German interceptors. Packed with specially commissioned artwork and maps, this title is a detailed and fascinating analysis of ΓÇ£Big WeekΓÇ¥--history''s first ever successful offensive counterair (OCA) campaign.
