Auszug: Die Liste der Namenstage in Lettland gibt für jeden Kalendertag die Vornamen an, für deren Träger dieser Tag in Lettland als Namenstag (lett. varda diena) gefeiert wird. Traditionsgemäß spielt der Namenstag eine große Rolle im Leben der Letten. Während der Namenstag als Festtag der betreffenden Person gefeiert wird, ist der Geburtstag hingegen von untergeordneter Bedeutung. Die hier angegebenen Vornamen entstammen der ursprünglich von den im Baltikum lebenden Letten und Deutschen gepflegten lutherischen Tradition. Sie wurde erweitert um heidnische Gottheiten und andere Gestalten der lettischen Mythologie, wie z. B. Laima oder Lacplesis. Die jährliche Liste von Namenstagen ergibt sich aus jedem Kalender, der in Lettland unbedingt die Namenstage enthalten muss, da er anderenfalls als nutzlos betrachtet würde. Über die Jahre hinweg werden "ausgestorbene" Namen ausgesondert und neue, "populäre" Namen aufgenommen. Die getroffenen Entscheidungen schlagen sich im regelmäßig erscheinenden "Dabas un vestures kalendars" (deutsch Natur- und Geschichtskalender) nieder. Das Geschlecht der namenstragenden Person ergibt sich im Lettischen aus der Endung des Vornamens: Als Mittsommerfest werden die Feierlichkeiten zur Sommersonnenwende bezeichnet. In den skandinavischen Ländern, in Finnland sowie im Baltikum, wo die Nächte zu dieser Jahreszeit kaum dunkel werden (¿Weiße Nächte¿), sind die Bräuche besonders lebendig. Originally released by ECM, they have been multiply re-issued, including by Universal/Polygram. The two volumes present performances of pianist Keith Jarrett with Gary Peacock on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Vol. 1 reached #14 on the Billboard Jazz Albums charts. In 2008 the two albums, along with 1983's Changes, were collected into a boxed set, Setting Standards: New York Sessions. The trio originally worked together on a 1977 album headline by Peacock, Tales of Another, coming back together in 1983 when producer Manfred Eicher proposed a trio album to Jarrett. Jarrett approached Peacock and DeJohnette with the idea of performing standards, which was greatly contrary to the contemporary jazz scene of the early 1980s. In a 2008 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Jarrett recalled his reasons for wanting to record standards. "This material was so damn good," he said, "and why was everyone ignoring it and playing clever stuff that sounds all the same?" He told Salon in 2000 that " valuable player doesn't have to play anything new to have value, because it's not about the material, it's about the playing." The three joined in a studio in Manhattan, New York for a 1 day session during which they recorded enough material for three albums, the two Standards volumes and Changes. For that session, as in subsequent, the trio did not rehearse or pre-plan their playlist. DeJohnette, also speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, recalled that the trio had agreed to "do this until we don't feel like doing this anymore". Guardians of the Lost Library was featured in Uncle Scrooge Adventures #27, published in July, 1994. This story was Don Rosa's first use of General Snozzie, the Junior Woodchucks bloodhound. Rosa created Guardians of the Lost Library at the request of Scandinavia-based, European Disney publisher Egmont in reference to the fact that Norway had officially declared 1993 to be "The Year of The Book" in order to promote reading (as the story was published in Norway and Denmark in 1993, one year prior to its first edition in the original English). Rosa figured that he would honor the written word best by sending the Ducks on an epic quest for the Library of Alexandria, where he "could show the evolution of books from papyrus scrolls through parchment tomes and the first Gutenberg volumes on up to the present day.
