von Jeffrey J Robinson & J Jeffrey Robinson

An almost universal concern of the Victorian governing classes was with the question of social control: how to deflect a largely uneducated working class from their inevitable challenge to the centres of power, accepted value systems and existing authority structures. The fear in which the masses were held by the middle and upper classes came to dominate access to education or, more accurately, to what they defined as "useful knowledge," since this was designed to instil the values of a just and ordered society. Conversely for the working class, it would give them power; power over their own lives and in so-doing provide access to that social hierarchy currently valued by the governing minority. This book addresses the role of the providers of education alongside the responses of those for whom it was intended. It discusses the provision of educational initiatives and the frequent attenuation of their founding objectives. It assesses the utility of the strategies of power and control adopted by the providers in order to maintain an upper class ideology. Though evidence is discussed in a national context, it is supported by additional data from a rural county both for the purpose of comparative analysis and in order to add character and hear the true voice of the men and women involved.

Interpersonal Acceptance and Rejection: Social, Emotional, and Educational Contexts draws on research to offer a global perspective on issues of fundamental importance to family functioning, childhood development, and adult intimate relationships, as well as to policy and practice for children, adolescents, couples, and families at risk. It draws on the perspectives of major social science disciplines such as clinical and educational psychology, anthropology, psychology, special education, and sociology, thus ensuring topics are discussed within broad theoretical frameworks. The authors cover a wide spectrum of questions and topics in relation to perceived acceptance and rejection by significant others. Chapters are set in the context of worldwide trends in the area of interpersonal acceptance-rejection. They considerably advance our knowledge of interpersonal acceptance-rejection theory and practice by tackling issues in major life contexts such as family, education, intimate relationships, and clinical-therapeutic practice. The book presents these important issues within the context of up-to-date research on interpersonal relationships that helps strengthen family and couple relationships and enhance the quality of attachment relationships in families. As such, it constitutes a useful reference source for academic researchers, clinicians, teachers, special educators, school counsellors, psychologists, and service agencies. Contributors to this edited book come from many parts of the world, including the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.

This praxis-based book explores how an improvisational, creative and embodied practice such as the dérive works to defamiliarise our experience of the late modern built environment, fostering new insight into routinised cultural behaviours. In addition to detailing the key contexts of modernity, this book includes case studies on the work of Viktor Shklovsky, Craig Raine, Georges Perec, plus rare scholarly attention to the postcards of Jim Henson's Uncle Traveling Matt. Tertiary students and early career researchers in the humanities, particularly cultural theory and the creative arts, will read about the work of internationally recognised artists who have responded creatively to the urban landscape in view of its habituation under advanced capitalism. The research aims to provide sufficient detail for the reader to recognise a range of cultural conditions pertaining to the historical period that frames contemporary quotidian experience and that, in turn, informs a wide range of reflexive, creative practices. The book's hybridity (complimenting a traditional scholarly style with auto-ethnographic and journalistic writing) offers the reader an authorial honesty, transparency and humanity in its intellectual, practical, and emotional negotiation of psychogeographic ideas.
