Combinatorics may very loosely be described as that branch of mathematics which is concerned with the problems of arranging objects in accordance with various imposed constraints.

The format of this edition remains unchanged from previous editions but the majority of entries have received some revision. We have kept the common names for organic compounds because of the wide readership of this book but we have added an extra table giving the equivalent systematic names and the formulae.

The aim of this book is to identify the main areas of active discussion about, and research into, the biology of animal behaviour, to describe and assess ways in which these can be studied and using selected examples, to illus trate the kinds of results which are emerging.

No organized effort to study the effect of working conditions on man's performance was made until the end of World War I, when the Industrial Fatigue Research Board was set up. For the first time, men trained in the human sciences entered industry to study men at work.

THE ECOLOGICAL SURVEY on which this book is based began to be planned in 1942, and since 1945 has been mainly centred upon Oxford University's estate at Wytham Woods, where a rich series of habitats from open ground and limestone to woodland with many springs and marshes interspersed occupies a hill set in riverine surroundings.

This book has grown from nine hours oflectures, and about the same time in tutorial classes, that attempt to give first-year students of biology some understanding of statistics.

There has been a considerable upsurge in interest in insect bio chemistry and physiology in recent years and this has been reflected in a notable expansion in the number of original papers in this field.

It is, in a sense, a general biology of the organism - not, however, of organisms as static unchanging systems, but of organisms as dynamic entities which progress through a definite cycle of events from birth to maturity.

The emphasis laid on modern views, and the relative poverty of references to the works of the older generation of petrologists, does not imply any disrespect of the latter. It is due to recognition of the desirability of affording the petrological student a newer and wider range of reading references than is usually supplied in this class of work;

Mrs. Mellanby's is no exception, for while the author planned this work to serve as a guide to the school pupil, which function it fulfils in an admirable way, it will also prove of value to the teacher, the university student and the amateur naturalist.

Time changes most things, and physical constants are seem ingly not immune from this contingency. The publishers' suggestion for a new edition has provided an opportunity for a thorough scrutiny of the contents of this book and for the adjustment to some fourteen years of changes since the last edition.

IN this monograph I have attempted to set out, in as elemen tary a form as possible, the basic mathematics of the theories of elasticity, plasticity, viscosity, and rheology, together with a discussion of the properties of the materials involved and the way in which they are idealized to form a basis for the mathe matical theory.

Originally published in 1922, this volume is based on four lectures delivered at Princeton University. It gives further explanation of the famous theory and its developments.

(iv) The chapter on int~gral theorems, now Chapter 5, has been expanded to include an altemative proof of Gauss's theorem, a treatmeot of Green's theorem and a more extended discussioo of the classification of vector fields.

This book began many years ago as course notes for students at the University of Bath, and later at the University of Kent. Second and third year students, as well as those taking MSc courses have used selections of the chapters.

This text is based on a course of about 16 hours lectures to students of mathematics, statistics, and/or operational research.
