A love letter to the small shop, and shop owners everywhere, by beloved bookseller Peter Miller. “There is a tradition of shopkeeping, a tradition of codes, etiquette, and customs. For the most part, it is an oral history, passed along, person to person. You learn to be a retailer—not by going to college, but by going to work. You learn from people who have learned how to run a shop.” [from the Introduction] For more than four decades, Peter Miller has run a design bookshop that shares his name in Seattle. He has also written three of his own books, manuals about cooking and about food and about eating together. In this love letter to his day job, Miller writes for the first time about his other love: shopkeeping. Miller crafts stories from the bookshop floor with wry humor and skillful storytelling. Readers are taken on a shopkeeping journey and will come to understand along the way that small shops characterize our towns and cities, making them unique, special, and worth visiting and living near. This essay collection is for shop lovers everywhere and captures the art and heart of running a local shop treasured by the community that surrounds it. By the end, you can’t help wanting to own a shop.

Excerpt: The Book of Common Prayer is the common title of a number of prayer books of the Church of England and of other Anglican churches, used throughout the Anglican Communion. The first book, published in 1549 (Church of England 1957), in the reign of Edward VI, was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. Prayer books, unlike books of prayers, contain the words of structured (or liturgical) services of worship. The work of 1549 was the first prayer book to contain the forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in English and to do so within a single volume; it included morning prayer, evening prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion. The book included the other occasional services in full: the orders for baptism, confirmation, marriage, 'prayers to be said with the sick' and a funeral service. It set out in full the Epistle and Gospel readings for the Sunday Communion Service. Set Old Testament and New Testament readings for daily prayer were specified in tabular format as were the set Psalms; and canticles, mostly biblical, that were provided to be sung between the readings (Careless 2003, p. 26). The 1549 book was rapidly succeeded by a reformed revision in 1552 under the same editorial hand, that of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. It never came into use because, on the death of Edward VI, his half-sister Mary I restored Roman Catholic worship. On her death, a compromise version, largely 1552 with a few amendments from 1549, was published in 1559. Following the tumultuous events leading to and including the English Civil War, another major revision was published in 1662 (Church of England 1662). That edition has remained the official prayer book of the Church of England, although in the 21st century, an alternative book called Common Worship has largely displaced the Book of Common Prayer at the main Sunday worship service of most English parish churches. The Book of Common Prayer appears in many variants in churches inside and ou

Excerpt: The two Japanese invasions of Korea took place from 1592 to 1598. Toyotomi Hideyoshi led the newly unified Japan into the first invasion (1592-1593) with the professed goal of conquering Korea, the Jurchens, Ming Dynasty China and India. The second invasion (1594-1596) was aimed rather solely as a retaliatory offensive against the Koreans. The invasions are also known as Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea, the Seven Year War (in reference to its span), the Imjin War (Hangul: ¿¿¿¿, Hanja: ¿¿¿¿ - lit. Japanese Invasion of the Imjin Year), in reference to the "Imjin (¿¿)" year of the sexagenary cycle in Korean, and Bunroku Keicho no eki (Japanese: ¿¿·¿¿¿¿). The first invasion (1592-1593) is literally called the "Japanese (¿ |wae|) Disturbance (¿ |ran|) of Imjin" (1592 being an imjin year in the sexagenary cycle) in Korean. Meanwhile, the war is called Bunroku no eki in Japanese (Bunroku referring to the Japanese era under the Emperor Go-Yozei, spanning the period from 1592 to 1596). The second invasion (1597-1598) is called the "Second War of Jeong-yu" and "Keicho no eki", respectively. In Japanese, the war was also called "Kara iri" (¿¿¿, literally "entry to China") in Edo period (17-19C) because Japan's ultimate purpose was the conquest of Ming China although the armies of Toyotomi Hideyoshi were confined to the Korean Peninsula for the duration of the war.
