  • - The Conservative Comeback

    43,00 €

This collection aims to restore conservatism as it existed before the Cold War – that is, before traditionalists entered into a disastrous alliance with classical liberals and libertarians; before those with a humble appreciation for society got mixed up with ideology. Timely perspectives on the present crisis draw from the timeless wisdom of the Western canon. The authors decry radical individualism in favour of strong communities.

  • von Anne Henderson
    32,00 €

Patrick McMahon Glynn was not the typical nineteenth-century Irish immigrant. Erudite and principled, this committed Catholic’s contribution to Australian society as a lawyer and parliamentarian has long deserved to be better known. Anne Henderson’s compelling and scholarly Federation’s Man of Letters ably fills this gap.-- MARGARET BEAZLEY AO QC

    von Ian MacFarlane

The papers in this book flowed from a Religious Liberty Conference convened jointly by the Sydney School of Law of The University of Notre Dame Australia, the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at Brigham Young University and the Research Unit for the Study of Society, Ethics and the Law at the University of Adelaide in 2018. The papers reflect insights and concerns about religious freedom when the Ruddock Review was considering whether religious liberty in Australia needed greater protection. Since that time, the Morrison government has commissioned the Australian Law Reform Commission to report on five of the Ruddock recommendations, the Australian Human Rights Commission has released a discussion paper of its own and the Commonwealth Attorney-General has released a draft Religious Discrimination Bill for discussion. The matters raised in these papers remain valid.

  • - A historical and theological review of the origins and substance of the doctrine
    von A Keith Thompson
    43,00 €

This book traces the idea of monotheism from Egypt in the 13th century B.C., through Israel's Divine Council down into Greek and Roman times when the rabbis were trying to protect their sacred religion from confusion with the god pantheons of those empires. The book identifies Jewish criticism of heretical Christian polytheism as the watershed which the Trinity doctrine was developed to answer. The Trinity doctrine is then traced through the Nicene Council in 325 A.D., the schism between East and West and into Anglican Archbishop Thomas Cranmer's innovation of a God "without body, parts or passions" in 1553.The book ends with a brief discussion of the Christology of the Unitarian, LDS and Jehovah's Witness faiths and concludes that as intended, 'Constantine's Creed' accommodates differences in Christian belief because he wanted to use that faith as the glue that would hold his Empire together.

  • - Poland 1980-81, an Australian Diary
    von John Burgess
    81,00 €

Late in September 1980, John Burgess arrived in Poland to head up the Australian Embassy in Warsaw. Little did he realise that he would witness major developments leading eventually to the end of communism in Poland and elsewhere in Eastern Europe, and dissolution of the Soviet Union. This book tells the story which Ambassador Burgess was able to witness personally at close quarters, from the emergence of the independent trade union, Solidarity, at the Lenin shipyards in Gdansk, until the imposition of martial law in December 1981 and beyond.

  • - Episodes in an Australian Foreign Service Career
    von Richard Gate
    37,00 €

In the decades following the Second World War Australia fostered close relations with many nations, most newly independent, throughout the world, especially in Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Richard Gate, a member of Australia's fledgling diplomatic service from the late 1950s, had postings in Korea, Nauru, Israel, Kenya (with accreditation also to Ethiopia and Uganda), Burma, Jordan and Bangladesh, as well as Italy and New Zealand. In the elegant essays which compose this volume, he recalls his sojourns in each of these countries, illuminating both the professional life of a diplomat and the benefits as well as the burdens of foreign service.

  • - Cycling and the Story of Italy
    von Kevin Andrew
    38,00 €

Great Rivalries is the story of Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi and the champion Italian cyclists who preceded them. It is about the place of cycling in a nation emerging from division, its agrarian past, widespread impoverishment, and competing visions about creating a modern state. It is interwoven with the story of Italy itself, which began a century earlier - and continues to play out today.

  • - The Triumph of Identity Politics
    von Michael Thompson
    32,00 €

In this book, Michael Thompson argues that the influence of identity politics on modern Labor's political agenda – assisted by a political class whose sole concern is power – poses an "existential" threat to Labor. The warning signs are clear. Popular disaffection with the political class is increasing, and the Party's embrace of left-wing, progressive issues is sidelining core working-class aspirations and grievances that used to be the focus of Labor politics.

Amazing and very funny, Magnetic Island is also a rumination on art, history and politics as original as it is shocking. Patrick Mynts, the owner of a London art gallery, has arrived in Australia on a government junket. In Australia's National Gallery, he is stunned by the work of an artist called Tray Beautous. As Tray's paintings are unknown in London and New York, Mynts is convinced that he can make a fortune by selling them there. Patrick also meets Dewy Popkiss in Canberra, the Prime Minister of Australia. Dew warns Mynts that only he will be able to arrange for the Londoner to get in touch with Beautous because Tray is a recluse who has hidden himself away on Magnetic Island in remote, tropical North Queensland. Dew will only agree to make the arrangements that will bring the two together, however, if Pat agrees to persuade Tray to paint a married couple of Dew's acquaintance when they are "making the beast with two backs". If Mynts manages to arrange this ménage à trois, Dew promises that the couple who are determined to perform in it will reward him stupendously. Patrick agrees to the deal and goes off to visit an elderly Canberra relative. Suddenly, however, the spirit of Brooklana Fagan - the dead wife of Australia's former Prime Minister - seems to ventriloquise his kinswoman's dementia-muzzled body. "Brookee" tells Pat that the couple whom Dew wants Tray to paint will use the sitting to murder the artist because they feel that one of the sculptures he has created insults the goddess that they worship, Christina Stead, the famous Australian novelist. (In the fashion of deceased Roman Empresses, Christina is now worshipped by millions worldwide). Pat now faces a Hamlet-like dilemma. Should he reject Dewy's commission? Or should he act on it and embrace, perhaps, eternal damnation for accepting the Premier's 30 pieces of silver?

  • von Guy Manuell
    32,00 €

In our day, one of Satan's most effective strategies to undermine God's intentions for relationships is to foster confusion about gender identity and roles. Our culture desperately needs a strong voice to declare a biblical understanding of what it means to bear God's image as male and female, and to reveal that image by how we live and relate. Manuell's book on Gender Wars provides that voice. His thorough dependence on Scripture issues a call the church must heed.-- Dr Larry Crabb, Founder of New Way Ministries and best-selling author of Finding God. Guy Manuell has produced a thoughtful and valuable defence of biblical complementarianism which, at the same time, highlights the dangers of rejecting or distorting the Bible's teaching about the equality and differences between men and women... His challenge to husbands in particular - to avoid the pitfalls of both abdication and domination - is timely. More than that, he is right to link the gender wars in the church with the battle over the authority of Scripture... -- Robert S. Smith, Lecturer in Theology and Ethics, Sydney Missionary & Bible College. This is a systematic, thorough and thoughtful examination of the roles of men and women within creation, marriage and the Church viewed from a careful biblical perspective. It demands close attention by Christians today.-- Richard Wheeler, Fellow & Council Member, Sydney College of Divinity. Guy Manuell has painstakingly negotiated a theological and sociological minefield to deliver a biblical and logical apologetic on the gender issue. The book is highly readable and obviously the product of considerable research. A strong feature is his strong Trinitarian argument in dealing with submission vis-à-vis inferiority and Jesus' sonship being from eternity and not from creation. In the healing of Jairus' daughter and the woman with the flow of blood, he establishes that Jesus gives priority to faith over age, gender, social custom and ceremonial law - a perspective not always obvious to the reader.-- Donald Howard is a retired Anglican minister who some years ago had the privilege of Guy and Bernice Manuell being members of his congregation at St. Peter's, Burwood East, in the Diocese of Sydney.

  • - Labor's vision for Australia
    von Adrian Pabst
    32,00 €

Paul Keating once remarked, "We at least in the Labor Party know that we are part of a big story, which is also the story of our country". Story of Our Country unpacks that big story and Labor's place in Australia's narrative. It explains why the ALP's purpose and character make it unique among centre-left parties in America, Britain, and Europe. Central to Labor's purpose is its promise to offer people a "share in those things that make life worth living" - the common good. Labor's vision of the good life is anchored in the everyday experience of working people. This gives Labor its distinctive strength - a paradoxical character that is at once progressive and conservative. Adrian Pabst argues that to gain and retain power, Labor needs to build coalitions between its traditional working-class base and middle-class voters. Labor can achieve this by deploying its distinctive strength to tackle the most critical issues facing Australia: inequality, precarious jobs, the care crisis, climate change, and emerging foreign powers.

  • - Turning Ideas into Gold - then Gold into Ideas
    von Ron Manners
    52,00 €

Ron's experiences and ideas are a roadmap and warning sign for entrepreneurs and citizens alike, we do not encourage and embrace entrepreneurship at our peril. There is so much to play for, so much to be won and lost - Ron's journey helps light the path. -- Steve "Shark Tank" Baxter, early-stage tech investor

  • von Nicholas Hasluck
    28,00 €

Art in Law by Nicholas Hasluck, a well-known writer and former Judge, shows the way in which works of fiction can be used to dramatize the law in action – from the trial scene in The Merchant of Venice to the downfall of Francis Bacon, from native title after Mabo to the push for an Aboriginal voice to parliament. Law may vary from place to place but the basic rule of procedural fairness – a party’s right to be heard – is common to most legal systems. The best advocates know how to tell a story because the rule depends on stories being told well. Nicholas Hasluck draws upon the works of many writers, including some of his own novels, in exploring this theme. In doing so, he provides a graphic account of the relationship between law and literature, and the way in which the art of persuasion will not only be of use to lawyers but to all those with an interest in the nature of law and justice.

  • von Philip Ayres

The private encounters described in this new book stretched from 1967 to the present and were the products of friendship, research, happenstance, curiosity or calculated risk. From Gerald Ford to Robert Mugabe, they're taken as found: an ascendant Soviet leader, abandoning his tour group for more interesting company, a charismatic Jamaican socialist whose policies split his island into warring halves, an African president-for-life who believed that all power is based in violence, another next door with his own distinctive system of things, a first lady of Fascism, the most right-wing judge on the U.S. Supreme Court, a Somali general in an anarchic world of his own making, an Ulster firebrand tamed by time and fatal prognosis, Afghan jihadists funded by an America whose culture they hate, Iranian revolutionaries and various other stand-outs in this panorama of personalities. The point of view is as judgmental as a tape recorder. If there's an attitude it's open-minded, sceptical and a shade cynical, proceeding from a working assumption that much of what we've read or been taught is at least partly false, often entirely false.

  • von Paul Dillon
    33,00 €

This book is an attempt to tell that story as best one can with the information that still exists. It's a simple story but the problem nowadays is by what yardstick should it be told. Should we see it as the loss of a pioneer attempting to settle the Australian outback, attempting to advance Australia. Or is the real story the relentless march of the white man's livestock trampling the flora and fauna and encroaching on koori country. Who should come first the wool or the environment? John Dowling had a job to do. He never expected to be killed in carrying out the ambitions and aspirations of the white citizens of Queensland. On the other hand, the intrusion of foreign squatters onto the fields and streams of the outback has left a lasting trail of regret in the minds of some.

  • von Geoffrey de Villehardouin
    32,00 €

Why read an interpretation of a historical event when you can read an eye-witness account. The History Matters series bypasses secondary sources to give you the primary source to start your historical inquiry. The fourth crusade is a highly contentious episode in the history of the crusades. It was here that the Latin-led crusaders turned on their own resulting in the attack on Constantinople, home of the Greek and Eastern Christians which ultimately led to the schism between the Greek and Latin churches. Originally written in French, not Latin, this eye-witness memoir by one of the crusaders is a must-read if one wants to get into the real history of the fourth crusade.

  • - Italian Australian essays

    36,00 €

At a time when multiculturalism and Australiäs recent immigration policies have been questioned and even criticized it is timely to reflect on one of the great success stories of the post-World War II period, namely the role of Italian immigrants in enriching every facet of Australian life. Few national groups have rivaled the Italian contribution. This collection of fascinating personal stories come from a selection of Italian Australians who have made their mark in the worlds of politics, religion, medicine, journalism, justice, art, music, fine wines, restaurants, high fashion, and more. The stories highlight both the central importance of religious faith, family life and food for those of Italian extraction along with the writers' wide range of attitudes and experiences.

  • - As Delivered: The Defining Speeches
    von Paul Ritchie
    43,00 €

This year we turn our attention to Tony Abbott's brief but productive period as Prime Minister. The influences of Menzies and Howardare clear, but so too is Abbott's literary skill, honed as a journalist. Like Menzies and Howard, Abbott achieved the remarkable task of leading his party out of opposition. These speeches reveal he also had a strong plan for government, accomplishing the tasks he had laid before the electorate while developing further plans for reform of the federation, taxation, welfare, indigenous affairs, health funding and more. This volume, like the others in the series, is, if you like, a selfportrait. Abbott: As Delivered is an intimate picture of politician who thought deeply about the purpose of government and its role in creating a more prosperous and just society not with its own energy but by releasing the potential of its people. We present it as a template for others who aspire to serve.Nick Cater

  • - From Small Town Farmer to Big Cheese
    von Vickie Janson

  • - The Deepening Crisis in Australian Universities

    42,00 €

Australia's universities today have one million students. But this apparent vigour belies a reality of decay. The Australian campus is marked by either torpor or mob rule. Academic morale is low. Students are disengaged. Unemployment rates of new graduates are strikingly high. Campus Meltdown seeks to cut through the din of self-celebratory propaganda from 'the sector' which shrouds these facts. It fires a flare over the stricken scene of the Australian university; throws light on the causes of the shambles; and identifies the springs of hope that are yet to be found in Australia's academic wasteland.

  • - Popes, Family, and Friends
    von Gerald O'Collins
    35,00 €

The twenty men and women portrayed in this book went rejoicing, or at least patiently, to the house of the Lord. With choirs of angels and saints, they now sing "the everlasting hymn." Before they left us to join the heavenly company, they were for me the music of life. I spent many years in the company of some of them, much less in the case of others. Hence the chapters of this book are longer or shorter. My hope is that readers will draw inspiration and courage from all their stories. -- From the PrefaceGerald Glynn O'Collins SJ is an Australian Jesuit priest, author, academic and educator. For more than three decades, he was professor of systematic and fundamental theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome). In 2006, O'Collins was made a Companion of the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC).

The Old Ghan was a magnificent feat of engineering, taking steam trains through an arid landscape from Adelaide to the centre of Australia. It was built and ran from 1884 to 1983. On Arabana land from Marree to Oodnadatta, that Aboriginal people helped survey then work upon the railway line. They were fettlers, gangers, locomotive engineers, yardmaster, train inspectors, train cleaners, shunters. They got equal pay from the 1920s, unlike most other Aboriginal people. The railway helped them stay on country, transact traditional business but also leap into modernity. Their story belies the assumption of universal dispossession and exclusion.

  • - How to Stop Big Business from Meddling in Politics
    von Jeremy Sammut
    26,00 €

In this book, Jeremy Sammut shows why the support of big business in that campaign could be just the beginning of corporate meddling in politically-contentious issues to come. Companies will become political players campaigning for 'systemic change' behind 'progressive' social, environmental, and economic causes if the Corporate Social Responsibility - CSR - activists operating inside Australia business get their way. The notion that corporations need a 'social license to operate' threatens to give business leaders a license to play politics on company time - and with shareholders' money. But to ensure the business of business remains business and not politics, it is not enough simply to complain about the takeover of business by 'corporate lefties'.

  • - Vital Challenges from the Mission Engage Program
    von James Grant
    32,00 €

Father James offers another clear-eyed assessment - this time not merely about a religious institution but about an entire generation of Australians that have accepted attitudes and traits that hold them back from flourishing. Father James does not approach the subject as an academic writing in the abstract, but as a man and a Catholic priest who has witnessed the problems first hand of people who embrace victimhood status and has seen how "non-judgementalism" has unsurprisingly not inspired people to be a better version of themselves. -- Morgan Begg, from the Foreword

A Guide to Climbing Ayers Rock is a celebration of the climb. It will provide the general public and those tourists and past visitors still interested in exploring the natural world, without being made to feel guilty by contradictory and irrational messages, with all the information they need to successfully and safely complete this physical adventure and fully appreciate the glory and wonder of the natural surrounds that can be viewed from the summit. The Handbook is packed with historical information, facts, photos and figures providing all the answers to the questions about the climb people were too afraid to ask. Who climbed it first? Who was the first woman to climb? The first family? Are there any other routes? Has anyone completed a traverse across the Rock? What is the best time of year to climb? What's the best footwear? How many people have died and how did they die? How did the death of one climber result in the release of Lindy Chamberlain from Darwin's Berrimah Prison. What you can see from the summit? It's not just a desert out there! Just why are the Traditional Owners closing it? Answers to these questions and more will be found in the Climber's Handbook. The main author is geologist Marc Hendrickx. Marc worked for the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the late 1990s and has completed the Climb a number of times. The first time in 1998, in the company of Matt Golombek, Science Director of the Mars Pathfinder Mission. The most recent in July 2018 with his two daughters. Marc has maintained an interest in the Climb over many years but was taken by surprise when the UKTNP board announced on November 1, 2017, that the Climb would be banned in October 2019. He immediately set out to provide information to counter specious and false information issued about the Climb by the Board and Parks Australia, establishing the "Right To Climb" blog and an online campaign to overturn the ban. The Climber's Handbook will provide the facts about the Climb that for long have been buried.

  • - An essential primer on how crop plants grow to feed the world
    von David F Smith
    32,00 €

It has never been more important than now to understand how to optimise the growth of crops plants in agriculture. As a result of continued increases in the human population on planet earth, and changes in consumer behaviour, agricultural production needs to increase by 60% over the next 40 years to meet the rising food demand. Total arable land is projected to increase only by less than 5% by 2050, so additional production will need to come from increased productivity. Whether you are a good earth citizen or have a job or business that supports agriculture, this book, Rain & Shine aims to refresh your understanding of the fairly simple story of what makes plants grow, and its place in modern agriculture.
