  • - The Triumph of Identity Politics
    von Michael Thompson
    34,00 €

In this book, Michael Thompson argues that the influence of identity politics on modern Labor's political agenda – assisted by a political class whose sole concern is power – poses an "existential" threat to Labor. The warning signs are clear. Popular disaffection with the political class is increasing, and the Party's embrace of left-wing, progressive issues is sidelining core working-class aspirations and grievances that used to be the focus of Labor politics.

  • von Harry Cummins

Amazing and very funny, Magnetic Island is also a rumination on art, history and politics as original as it is shocking. Patrick Mynts, the owner of a London art gallery, has arrived in Australia on a government junket. In Australia's National Gallery, he is stunned by the work of an artist called Tray Beautous. As Tray's paintings are unknown in London and New York, Mynts is convinced that he can make a fortune by selling them there. Patrick also meets Dewy Popkiss in Canberra, the Prime Minister of Australia. Dew warns Mynts that only he will be able to arrange for the Londoner to get in touch with Beautous because Tray is a recluse who has hidden himself away on Magnetic Island in remote, tropical North Queensland. Dew will only agree to make the arrangements that will bring the two together, however, if Pat agrees to persuade Tray to paint a married couple of Dew's acquaintance when they are "making the beast with two backs". If Mynts manages to arrange this ménage à trois, Dew promises that the couple who are determined to perform in it will reward him stupendously. Patrick agrees to the deal and goes off to visit an elderly Canberra relative. Suddenly, however, the spirit of Brooklana Fagan - the dead wife of Australia's former Prime Minister - seems to ventriloquise his kinswoman's dementia-muzzled body. "Brookee" tells Pat that the couple whom Dew wants Tray to paint will use the sitting to murder the artist because they feel that one of the sculptures he has created insults the goddess that they worship, Christina Stead, the famous Australian novelist. (In the fashion of deceased Roman Empresses, Christina is now worshipped by millions worldwide). Pat now faces a Hamlet-like dilemma. Should he reject Dewy's commission? Or should he act on it and embrace, perhaps, eternal damnation for accepting the Premier's 30 pieces of silver?

  • - Labor's vision for Australia
    von Adrian Pabst
    32,00 €

Paul Keating once remarked, "We at least in the Labor Party know that we are part of a big story, which is also the story of our country". Story of Our Country unpacks that big story and Labor's place in Australia's narrative. It explains why the ALP's purpose and character make it unique among centre-left parties in America, Britain, and Europe. Central to Labor's purpose is its promise to offer people a "share in those things that make life worth living" - the common good. Labor's vision of the good life is anchored in the everyday experience of working people. This gives Labor its distinctive strength - a paradoxical character that is at once progressive and conservative. Adrian Pabst argues that to gain and retain power, Labor needs to build coalitions between its traditional working-class base and middle-class voters. Labor can achieve this by deploying its distinctive strength to tackle the most critical issues facing Australia: inequality, precarious jobs, the care crisis, climate change, and emerging foreign powers.

  • von Nicholas Hasluck
    29,00 €

Art in Law by Nicholas Hasluck, a well-known writer and former Judge, shows the way in which works of fiction can be used to dramatize the law in action – from the trial scene in The Merchant of Venice to the downfall of Francis Bacon, from native title after Mabo to the push for an Aboriginal voice to parliament. Law may vary from place to place but the basic rule of procedural fairness – a party’s right to be heard – is common to most legal systems. The best advocates know how to tell a story because the rule depends on stories being told well. Nicholas Hasluck draws upon the works of many writers, including some of his own novels, in exploring this theme. In doing so, he provides a graphic account of the relationship between law and literature, and the way in which the art of persuasion will not only be of use to lawyers but to all those with an interest in the nature of law and justice.

  • von Paul Dillon
    34,00 €

This book is an attempt to tell that story as best one can with the information that still exists. It's a simple story but the problem nowadays is by what yardstick should it be told. Should we see it as the loss of a pioneer attempting to settle the Australian outback, attempting to advance Australia. Or is the real story the relentless march of the white man's livestock trampling the flora and fauna and encroaching on koori country. Who should come first the wool or the environment? John Dowling had a job to do. He never expected to be killed in carrying out the ambitions and aspirations of the white citizens of Queensland. On the other hand, the intrusion of foreign squatters onto the fields and streams of the outback has left a lasting trail of regret in the minds of some.

  • von Geoffrey de Villehardouin
    34,00 €

Why read an interpretation of a historical event when you can read an eye-witness account. The History Matters series bypasses secondary sources to give you the primary source to start your historical inquiry. The fourth crusade is a highly contentious episode in the history of the crusades. It was here that the Latin-led crusaders turned on their own resulting in the attack on Constantinople, home of the Greek and Eastern Christians which ultimately led to the schism between the Greek and Latin churches. Originally written in French, not Latin, this eye-witness memoir by one of the crusaders is a must-read if one wants to get into the real history of the fourth crusade.

  • - Italian Australian essays

    37,00 €

At a time when multiculturalism and Australiäs recent immigration policies have been questioned and even criticized it is timely to reflect on one of the great success stories of the post-World War II period, namely the role of Italian immigrants in enriching every facet of Australian life. Few national groups have rivaled the Italian contribution. This collection of fascinating personal stories come from a selection of Italian Australians who have made their mark in the worlds of politics, religion, medicine, journalism, justice, art, music, fine wines, restaurants, high fashion, and more. The stories highlight both the central importance of religious faith, family life and food for those of Italian extraction along with the writers' wide range of attitudes and experiences.

  • - As Delivered: The Defining Speeches
    von Paul Ritchie
    45,00 €

This year we turn our attention to Tony Abbott's brief but productive period as Prime Minister. The influences of Menzies and Howardare clear, but so too is Abbott's literary skill, honed as a journalist. Like Menzies and Howard, Abbott achieved the remarkable task of leading his party out of opposition. These speeches reveal he also had a strong plan for government, accomplishing the tasks he had laid before the electorate while developing further plans for reform of the federation, taxation, welfare, indigenous affairs, health funding and more. This volume, like the others in the series, is, if you like, a selfportrait. Abbott: As Delivered is an intimate picture of politician who thought deeply about the purpose of government and its role in creating a more prosperous and just society not with its own energy but by releasing the potential of its people. We present it as a template for others who aspire to serve.Nick Cater

  • - From Small Town Farmer to Big Cheese
    von Vickie Janson

  • - The Deepening Crisis in Australian Universities

    44,00 €

Australia's universities today have one million students. But this apparent vigour belies a reality of decay. The Australian campus is marked by either torpor or mob rule. Academic morale is low. Students are disengaged. Unemployment rates of new graduates are strikingly high. Campus Meltdown seeks to cut through the din of self-celebratory propaganda from 'the sector' which shrouds these facts. It fires a flare over the stricken scene of the Australian university; throws light on the causes of the shambles; and identifies the springs of hope that are yet to be found in Australia's academic wasteland.

  • - Popes, Family, and Friends
    von Gerald O'Collins
    37,00 €

The twenty men and women portrayed in this book went rejoicing, or at least patiently, to the house of the Lord. With choirs of angels and saints, they now sing "the everlasting hymn." Before they left us to join the heavenly company, they were for me the music of life. I spent many years in the company of some of them, much less in the case of others. Hence the chapters of this book are longer or shorter. My hope is that readers will draw inspiration and courage from all their stories. -- From the PrefaceGerald Glynn O'Collins SJ is an Australian Jesuit priest, author, academic and educator. For more than three decades, he was professor of systematic and fundamental theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome). In 2006, O'Collins was made a Companion of the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC).

  • von Michael Duke
    34,00 €

The Old Ghan was a magnificent feat of engineering, taking steam trains through an arid landscape from Adelaide to the centre of Australia. It was built and ran from 1884 to 1983. On Arabana land from Marree to Oodnadatta, that Aboriginal people helped survey then work upon the railway line. They were fettlers, gangers, locomotive engineers, yardmaster, train inspectors, train cleaners, shunters. They got equal pay from the 1920s, unlike most other Aboriginal people. The railway helped them stay on country, transact traditional business but also leap into modernity. Their story belies the assumption of universal dispossession and exclusion.

  • - How to Stop Big Business from Meddling in Politics
    von Jeremy Sammut
    27,00 €

In this book, Jeremy Sammut shows why the support of big business in that campaign could be just the beginning of corporate meddling in politically-contentious issues to come. Companies will become political players campaigning for 'systemic change' behind 'progressive' social, environmental, and economic causes if the Corporate Social Responsibility - CSR - activists operating inside Australia business get their way. The notion that corporations need a 'social license to operate' threatens to give business leaders a license to play politics on company time - and with shareholders' money. But to ensure the business of business remains business and not politics, it is not enough simply to complain about the takeover of business by 'corporate lefties'.

  • - Vital Challenges from the Mission Engage Program
    von James Grant
    34,00 €

Father James offers another clear-eyed assessment - this time not merely about a religious institution but about an entire generation of Australians that have accepted attitudes and traits that hold them back from flourishing. Father James does not approach the subject as an academic writing in the abstract, but as a man and a Catholic priest who has witnessed the problems first hand of people who embrace victimhood status and has seen how "non-judgementalism" has unsurprisingly not inspired people to be a better version of themselves. -- Morgan Begg, from the Foreword

Who climbed it first? Who was the first woman to climb? The first family? Are there any other routes? Has anyone completed a traverse across the Rock? What is the best time of year to climb? What's the best footwear? How many people have died and how did they die? How did the death of one climber result in the release of Lindy Chamberlain from Darwin's Berrimah Prison. What you can see from the summit? It's not just a desert out there! Just why are the Traditional Owners closing it? Answers to these questions and more will be found in the Climber's Handbook. The main author is geologist Marc Hendrickx. Marc worked for the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the late 1990s and has completed the Climb a number of times. The first time in 1998, in the company of Matt Golombek, Science Director of the Mars Pathfinder Mission. The most recent in July 2018 with his two daughters. Marc has maintained an interest in the Climb over many years but was taken by surprise when the UKTNP board announced on November 1, 2017, that the Climb would be banned in October 2019. He immediately set out to provide information to counter specious and false information issued about the Climb by the Board and Parks Australia, establishing the "Right To Climb" blog and an online campaign to overturn the ban. The Climber's Handbook will provide the facts about the Climb that for long have been buried.

  • - An essential primer on how crop plants grow to feed the world
    von David F Smith
    32,00 €

It has never been more important than now to understand how to optimise the growth of crops plants in agriculture. As a result of continued increases in the human population on planet earth, and changes in consumer behaviour, agricultural production needs to increase by 60% over the next 40 years to meet the rising food demand. Total arable land is projected to increase only by less than 5% by 2050, so additional production will need to come from increased productivity. Whether you are a good earth citizen or have a job or business that supports agriculture, this book, Rain & Shine aims to refresh your understanding of the fairly simple story of what makes plants grow, and its place in modern agriculture.

  • von Mark Lawson

From Chapter 1:Once a week in a conference room in Salt Lake City, in the American state of Utah, a dozen people gather for a session of climate change grief counselling. Convened by a Laura Schmidt, a full-time activist with a masters in environmental humanities, the sessions permit the participants to vent over all the things not being done about climate change, and how the participants themselves are doing things that contribute to a problem (such as drive cars to the meetings, we suppose) that they imagine will affect their loved ones. One tale to emerge from these fraught sessions is that of a woman who, when confronted by piles of merchandise in a store produced and packaged in all sorts of energy-intensive ways, had to retreat to her car to recover for a time before she could face shopping again. Ms Schmidt, who organised additional sessions following the election of Donald Trump as American president (Trump easily won Utah, a traditionally Republican state), has developed a ten-step coping program loosely based on the Alcoholics Anonymous program to cope with this sort of stress.

Who defines the public interest? As the contributors to the collection have shown, the question itself is complex: which public and whose interests? The answer is controversial as well: it is not simply politicians and bureaucrats although they have a prominent role. Journalists and academics, community leaders and private citizens have all seized the initiative and asserted their entitlement as members of the public to assert shared interests and common aspirations principally in advocacy but sometimes through action. Does the authority to define the public interest come with a duty to see it promoted and protected? In addition to canvassing competing visions and contrasting expressions of the public interest and their relationship to the common good, the contributors also examine the limits of public interest claims and how a range of professional groups might discharge their obligation to act in the public interest.

  • - Melbourne Catholic Leadership 1920-1970
    von Patrick Morgan

The Mannix Era covers the main actors, organizations, events and issues in the archdiocese from 1920-1970. Patrick Morgan was educated at St Bernard's CBC, Moonee Ponds, and at the University of Melbourne. He taught English at the Clayton and Churchill campuses of Monash University and has written and edited books on topics where religion, politics and history intersect. • - Putting the Culture to Death?
    von Peter Kurti
    24,00 €

Mounting pressure to legalise assisted suicide and euthanasia is a one-way ratchet asserting the primacy of individual choice. Euthanasia advocates insist nothing can ever outweigh that choice. But in this book, Peter Kurti argues these demands need to be resisted because of the impact individual choice about assisted suicide will have on wider society - on the family, on friends, on the local community.Legalising euthanasia and assisted suicide enshrines in law a rejection of the duties we owe to others and the claims others have upon us. It will destroy family relationships, damage the trust we place in the medical profession, and corrode the bonds of civil society forged between individuals within communities. In his answers to seven key questions about euthanasia and assisted suicide, Kurti argues that when society permits some of its citizens to be killed, it tears the fabric of community and threatens to put the culture itself to death.

  • - Australia
    von Augusto Zimmermann
    34,00 €

"In his latest tome, 'Christian Foundations of the Common Law', Dr Augusto Zimmermann rediscovers the Christian roots of the English, American and Australian legal systems. With scholarly acuity, this work skilfully uncovers how great thinkers in Western Civilization understood the cultural importance of these self-evident truths to society and good governance under the rule of law. At a time when perhaps we need it most, Zimmermann shows how Christian ideas like 'natural law', 'natural rights' and 'natural justice', contributed to the development of the common law. In doing so, Dr Zimmermann's work convincingly confirms for us that ideas informed by the Bible influenced in important ways the development of the Common Law, and indeed, the preservation of freedom and justice. Woven through the very readable chapters of this book is a profound understanding of an ancient sacred premise: God revealed moral absolutes in His Word, and placed these truths on the human heart". --William Wagner, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law, Western Michigan University, U.S.A., Former U.S. Federal Judge & U.S. Diplomat, President, Salt & Light Global
