    Je crois utile de faire précéder l'étude qu'on va lire de quelques mots d'explication, pour bien en préciser le but et la portée. Je n'ai point écrit une biographie de Michelet et n'ai point voulu faire la critique de ses ¿uvres. Il n'est qu'une personne qui ait qualité pour raconter la vie de Michelet; c'est celle qui pendant de longues années a vécu à côté de lui, associée à tous ses travaux et à toutes ses pensées, à qui il a légué ce qu'il avait de plus précieux, les papiers intimes, les notes quotidiennes, où il mettait le meilleur de son âme. Elle seule pourra nous le faire bien connaître, dire ce qu'il a été et ce qu'il a voulu, les aspirations idéales et les émotions profondes dont ses écrits n'ont pu être que l'incomplète révélation. Déjà les deux volumes autobiographiques qu'elle a publiés, Ma Jeunesse et Mon Journal, nous ont appris ce que furent les vingtquatre premières années de Michelet, et nous ont permis de retrouver dans l'enfant et le jeune homme la sensibilité et les tendances intellectuelles de l'homme fait. Ses livres, d'autre part, m'ont trop puissamment ému, je l'ai personnellement trop connu et aimé pour que mon jugement pût être impartial et pour qu'il me fût possible de signaler ses défauts et ses erreurs; mes travaux, d'ailleurs, et les tendances naturelles de mon esprit m'entraînent dans une direction trop différente de la sienne pour qu'il me fût permis de me poser en disciple et de répondre en son nom aux critiques et aux attaques dont il a été l'objet.Je n'ai voulu que rendre hommage à la mémoire de Michelet; hommage qui était de ma part une dette personnelle. Je n'ai pas cru pouvoir mieux honorer et servir sa mémoire qu'en rappelant simplement ce qu'il a fait, et en montrant combien noble et pure a été l'inspiration de ses ¿uvres et de sa vie. Je laisse à d'autres et à l'avenir le soin de les passer au crible et de décider quelles furent ses fautes, comme écrivain et comme savant.
