Ciò m'indusse a considerarli degni di comparir sulle Scene, per far mostra, se non dei loro fatti, almeno dei loro respettivi caratteri: cioè Bertoldo vecchio astuto, malizioso, sentenzioso e mordace; Bertoldino sciocco e goffo, ma però fornito di contadinesca malizia, facendolo io vedere non ragazzo, come andò la prima volta alla Corte, ma in età virile ed ammogliato, dicendo di lui l'Autore del canto decimo nono alla trigesima settima ottava: Da che moglie si prese, è fatto acc...

Così cantava messer Lodovico: e questa volta il magnifico cantore non adulava la «erculea prole».
