This is the forth in Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series (chronologically it is the fifth book after Anne of the Windy Poplars, written in 1936). Une femme d'esprit, qui n'a pas des idées bien arrêtées sur les mérites ittéraires, m'a prié, moi indigne, de corriger le style de ce roman. Je suis loin d'adopter certains sentiments politiques qui semblent mêlés à la narration ; voilà ce que j'avais besoin de dire au lecteur. L'aimable auteur et moi nous pensons d'une manière opposée sur bien des choses, mais nous avons également en horreur ce qu'on appelle des applications. On fait à Londres des romans très piquants : Vivian Grey, Almak's High Life, Matilda, etc., qui ont besoin d'une clé. Ce sont des caricatures fort plaisantes contre des personnes que les hasards de la naissance ou de la fortune ont placées dans une position qu'on envie.Voilà un genre de mérite littéraire dont nous ne voulons point. L'auteur n'est pas entré, depuis 1814 au premier étage du palais des Tuileries ; il a tant d'orgueil, qu'il ne connaît pas même de nom les personnes qui se font sans doute remarquer dans un certain monde.

L'étourderie naturelle à l'âge d'Isaure lui empêcha de remarquer que sa tante revenait sans le voile de mousseline quelle lui avait vu le matin: mais mademoiselle Cécile, dont l'esprit d'ordre allait parfois jusqu'à la tyrannie, ne manqua pas de demander à sa maîtresse, d'un ton respectueusement impérieux, ce qu'elle avait fait de son voile. La marquise lui répondit, avec le trouble d'une enfant qui ment à sa gouvernante, qu'elle n'en savait rien.¿Ah! je devine, madame l'aura sûrement oublié dans sa voiture; et, sans perdre de temps, mademoiselle Cécile descend dans la cour, retourne tous les coussins de la berline, et, ne trouvant rien, finit par conclure que la marquise aura laissé son voile dans l'église de Saint-Denis: elle veut absolument qu'un domestique monte à cheval pour l'aller chercher, mais on refuse tout net de lui obéir, en répondant qu'on ne fera ce voyage que par les ordres de madame; et la marquise est obligée d'employer son autorité pour s'opposer au zèle de mademoiselle Cécile, en disant que ce voile ne vaut pas tant de recherches, et qu'il est inutile d'en faire de nouvelles.

Quand j'étais enfant, je me confessais. Combien j'ai souhaité de fois être encore celui qui entrait dans la chapelle vers les cinq heures du soir, cette vide et froide chapelle du collège avec ses murs crépis à la chaux, avec ses bancs numérotés, son maigre harmonium, sa criarde Sainte Famille, sa voûte peinte en bleu et semée d'étoiles. Un maître nous amenait, dix par dix. Quand arrivait mon tour de m'agenouiller dans l'une des deux cases réservées aux pénitents sur chaque côté de l'étroite guérite en bois, mon c¿ur battait à se rompre.
