Kwasi Wiredu (1931 - 2022). He was a Ghanaian philosopher. Often called the greatest African philosopher of his generation, his works, particularly the rallying call for conceptual decolonization of African thought, have greatly contributed to the development of postcolonial African philosophy. One of Wiredu's concerns when defining "African Philosophy" was the cognizance of the precolonial, colonial and postcolonial African thoughts that have to be linked. While recognising the central roles precolonial African cultures have towards the development of African philosophy, Wiredu maintains that African folk-beliefs and world views must be treated as heritages for the practice of philosophising. He, however, argues that the African heritages, both cultural and colonial, must be decolonised.

The interest, awareness and importance of human rights has continued to dominate public discourse. This is partly because human rights help us to recognise and respect our shared rights and responsibilities so that we may be able to co-exist while upholding the values and principles of democracy. This voluminous contribution provides a systematic and comprehensive reflection on the state of human rights in Southern Africa. The main aim is to deepen the understanding of human rights from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Contributors analyse how human rights are not only promoted and protected from possible violations, but also abused with reference to divergent contexts in Southern African. The wide-ranging themes, perspectives and theoretical frameworks in this work provides for a deeper and boarder understanding of human rights in the region.

This book is a synthesis of catholic social teaching related to the climate crisis, an examination of the climate debate from a catholic perspective. After looking at the main ecological issues, the root of the problem is identified by the Holy Fathers as a moral crisis within humanity. This moral crisis stems from a misunderstanding of humanities proper place within the cosmos leading to anthropocentrism and a dominating attitude towards the earth and its resources. An exegesis of both the Old and New Testament is conducted to identify key passages that help to redefine the covenant relationship between creator and creature and to provide a theocentric mindset. This publication examines emerging models of creation and track the development of catholic social teaching regarding creation care up to the publication of Laudato Si', as well as current ecumenical initiatives and joint statements from the churches.

Issues of Constitutionalism, explores what has become one of the most controversial issues on the continent. In the last few decades, constitution making, and issues of constitutionalism without any doubt, have gained considerable prominence. Much as it is argued that constitutionalism promotes the rule of law, it is also argued that many African leaders do not believe in constitutional rule or those provisions that limit their powers. It is further, argued that not every state that has a constitution (in that sense) is a constitutional state. Some constitutional law scholars are of the opinion that some are sham constitutions, in that they exist for 'cosmetic' purposes only and have no effect in reality. The debate in the context of philosophy of law on the constitution as written document or unwritten principles in light of democracy, the rule of law and constitutionalism is ongoing. The study critically analyses the doctrine of constitutionalism in light of majoritarian democracies in Africa focusing on Uganda as the case study and explores the question whether having a written constitution is condition enough to satisfy that any given state is indeed a constitutional state. The work in this book has looked at different theories in constitutionalism in order to encourage critical thinking on issues of a constitutional democracy, the rule of law, and human rights in general.

The historical development of the relationship between Muslims and Politics in South Africa indicates that Islam has played an important role in the political sphere since the dawn of the apartheid political dispensation in 1948. Thus, there has been a need to comprehensively and systematically explore the political involvement of Muslim organisations, the various ways in which they have featured in the political landscape and why such involvement is important. By closely examining the political involvement of several Muslim organisations in the post-1948 South Africa, this work offers a critical and exhaustive description of the role Islam has played in South African politics.

This book offers a unique approach to contemporary moral issues. Philosophers from antiquity until contemporary times have wrestled with the question of morality. The present work contains ten related chapters, all on moral issues, except chapter two, which is about "knowing". The reason for inserting the chapter on "knowing" is to help the reader to familiarize him/herself with the notion of knowing. It is the chapter which will guide the reader through the chapters that follow, so that he/she can ask, "How do I know that what I am knowing is correct or incorrect?" And, "How do I reach objectivity in the issue at hand?" Other topics dealt with include The Golden Rule, Conscience and its formation, The Natural Law, Freedom and Responsibility and The Question of God.
