Im 5. Buch erläutert Thomas von Aquin die wichtigsten, von Aristoteles eingeführten Begriffe der Metaphysik in ihrer hauptsächlichen Bedeutung. Dies sind insbesondere die Begriffe Prinzip, Ursache, Element, Natur, Notwendigkeit, Einheit, dann den Begriff des Seienden und den Begriff des Wesens, bzw. Substanz. Im 10. Kapitel erklärt Thomas die Bedeutung von Entgegensetzung, dann folgen die Lektionen zu Früher und Später, Potenz und Möglichkeit, bzw. deren Gegensätze und im weiteren dann die Kategorien (Quantität, Qualität, Relation). Dieses Lexikon ist grundlegend für das Studium der Philosophie und der wichtigsten Begriffe der Philosophie.
