  • von Lawrence Clayton

As our country goes through trying times, the author put together the best of his op-ed columns, published in his local newspaper, The Tuscaloosa News, which deals with the issues facing our nation today. Clayton ranges all the way from the issues very close to home and family, such as what is being taught in our schools, colleges, and universities, to issues straddling the incredibly complex and often rancorous events in public life, from the presidency of the nation all the way down to local school boards. He not only identifies and analyzes issues we are all, more or less, familiar with, like Project 1619, critical race theory, the programs of diversity, equity, and inclusion in virtually all colleges and universities across the country, but the reader will also find suggestions and remedies for a world that has become almost dysfunctional or dystopic in today's language. These suggestions range all the way from establishing new programs of study that emphasize our traditional values, like liberty, equality, the right to vote, personal responsibility, and furthermore, call for a restoration of the home and religion to fashionably modern concerns with sexism, racism, and other expressions leaving young people at loose ends on who they are and what is it that made the nation so prosperous and generous until this day. As a historian, he does not ignore what went wrong over the years in the making of our people but deals with them honestly and explores many answers suggested by a close reading of both natural law and Christian Scripture.

Gabriel Segovia hails from Laguna, Philippines. The youngest son of a wealthy family, he was raised with Christian values of daily prayers, respect, humility, and community service.Everything is going well for him in his quest for a future as a mechanical engineer until his final year of college. Broken with devastation when a freak accident takes his two childhood friends, he is left wondering what he could have done to save them.Under the provisions of the Military Bases Agreement between the United States and the Philippines, Filipino nationals are recruited to serve as stewards on US Navy ships. Most Filipinos enlist in the United States Navy for one purpose: an opportunity for a better life. But for Segovia, it is different. He feels the Navy might provide what he needs in search of a panacea for the emptiness and pain that haunt him. With his family's blessing, he enlists in the Navy. And like most minorities, he faces bigotry and abuse on board the ship. However, his commanding officer develops a certain admiration for him, even inviting Gabriel to a life-changing Thanksgiving dinner with his family. Love abounds, and as other family members grapple with their past, the adventure leads us back to the Philippine islands in search of closure and new beginnings. A deployment to the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War and a kidnapping motivated by vengeance push Gabriel to the limits of his endurance, faith, and call of duty. His unquestionable courage, his caring for the welfare of others, his unselfishness, and his devotion to God, country, and duty make him an inspiration to his family and his shipmates, touching the lives of many and leaving behind a legacy to be shared with generations to come as he finds peace within himself.

The year 2020 is the most memorable of all times due to the undeniable national challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic spread quite rapidly throughout the nation, causing businesses, schools, colleges, huge events, ball games, and any traveling to be either cancelled, placed on hold, or closed indefinitely. As a result of this major change, many individuals and families were forced to stay home in quarantine, which caused major mental health issues and general health issues, such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, which were on the rise as well. Also, many individuals and families lost loved ones due to COVID-19, most of which were in the African-American and Latino/Latinex communities. Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic, systemic racism became a commonality in the US. The death of an African-American man as a result of police brutality raised major concerns and international protests from the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement. This book outlines and teaches individuals and families regarding preventive health practices and maintaining optimal healthy lifestyles. Also, this book dissects and outlines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and how systemic racism plays a major role in our Black and Brown communities nationwide.
