Heining's work shows raw emotion roiling just below the surface. His trademark: PASSION...be he citing love/sacrifice, anger/revenge, or oft something in between. (CARING: Steven once saved a nearly-pulped 3 A.M. mugging victim by simply using his car's horn/high-beams. COMBATIVE: He then terrorized the muggers by nearly running 'em down after a harassing twenty-block pursuit.) Yes, Heining is never ordinary/ALWAYS provocative. In Latin: "sui generis."Steven's trauma over his wife's death explains BETWEEN TWO WORLDS' theme: mortality. Facing life's fragility. Here Heining explores the heart's chiaroscuro (love's lows/highs); yet ever the rebel, he's done so by fusing different forms (quotes, dedication, preface, in memoriam, story, cryptograms/their answers). BTW is quality over quantity, poignant even if petite. Er, poignant save Steven's one Cujo-like baring of fangs. (Ibsen wrote: "To live is to war with trolls.")BTW's literary rating: PG-13.

Daily life during a pandemic is unnerving enough without constant worries over whether you will go hungry tomorrow or have enough nutritious, sustaining meals to feed your family. This ongoing shortage has become more crucial than ever as local hunger relief programs observed a 40% rise in food insecurity and the need for assistance during the pandemic. I vividly remember being a young mother, scrimping to buy my toddler meat and vegetables and being grateful for my own meal of oatmeal and tea. The current situation is even more challenging, due in part to the constraints imposed by Covid-19.Access to nourishing food is difficult for countless people in rural, inner city and low-income communities. Many people are forced to eat the most highly processed and least nutritious food - because it is the only food available and affordable near home. Although highly processed food may help people meet their calorie needs, it does not provide the essential nutrients necessary to keep them healthy. Many forms of malnutrition result from these circumstances.Thankful for being retired, healthy and financially secure, I spent my time in isolation improving my own health and creating this cookbook in support of people facing a lack of proper nourishment. My objective is to share wholesome, comforting, and thrifty recipes to help all cooks be more creative using whatever ingredients are available. All royalties from the sale of this publication will go to the local food bank and my neighbors experiencing food insecurity during these challenging times.

Cretan Courage: The Milatos Cave and Beyond is a dramatic family history, beginning in Crete, Greece, which comes alive through the fascinating, multi-generational journey of Greek Cretans. The lively narrative includes eyewitness descriptions of Crete's history, including massacres and attempted genocide by Turkish soldiers, death marches to slave markets, child kidnappings, mass murders, and systemic abuse of innocent women. Despite enduring unimaginable brutality, the actual events paint a vivid picture of Cretan courage and fortitude. After rebellions, revolution, and the ultimate liberation their island, the Cretans emerge with their extraordinary vitality, like a phoenix from the ashes. The family members' paths diverge as some gamble their lives to emigrate to the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. As immigrants in the U.S., they endure punishing factory work and frontline injuries in wars they fight for their new country. Despite hardships, many joys and accomplishments dominate their lives. As the third generation of Greek Americans come of age in the U.S., they learn their ancestral roots, and bond with prior generations that struggled to provide them with a better life.On the cusp of the 200-year anniversary of the historic Milatos Cave massacre, in which the author's great-great-great-great grandfather was murdered, this book is a powerful account of the actual events and people that shaped history.

What do you do when there are too many things to do? For many professionals, the demands of work and life continue to expand as their careers advance. The ability to find a way to both manage the expanding scope and responsibilities of life and to also feel fully engaged eludes most. However, some have figured it out and solved this problem. The Balance Equation is informed by the authors' work with thousands of busy, successful people with too much to do. It's an examination and thoughtful analysis of those who have struggled to manage it all, and those who have developed ways to make it all work. It's a guide for people who want to create both success and satisfaction in their life and work. It's a framework for those who want to find a way to live an impactful, meaningful, fulfilled life without sacrificing their sleep, health, relationships, or wellbeing. Like a tricky math problem, the solution isn't always obvious; but for those who are willing to examine the variables, structure the steps, and do the work, the balance equation can be solved.

Clawing herself out of the caustic and sewage-laden river, Anna can only think of one thing-getting home. Though she lives just a few short blocks from the acrid waterway, she soon finds that the journey she's about to take is much longer and infinitely more transformative. For Anna lives in a steel town, a modern-day American steel town where the environmental movement slipped away years ago. She's spent her entire young existence in the shadows of the furnaces that give her town life. She has never questioned what they are or what they mean for the world around her.The Big Ol' Man in the Sky is the story of one fateful weekend when all that begins to change. It's a story about lives forgotten and memories rekindled. It's a story of the unending quest for truth and purpose.

Have you ever wondered what specifically takes place if you, or someone you love, were to experience hospice care? Honestly, during an unthinkable crisis, wouldn't it be a relief if your wants and your fears were among the top priorities being addressed? And wouldn't you like to know that the attention includes both you and your loved ones? Imagine how comforting it would be to have the same nurse, nurse aide, social worker and others give you care for the entire time you or your loved one is on service. And after the crisis is over and all the sympathy calls have subsided, think about the reassuring comfort received from someone who stays in contact with you for over a year after the crisis is over. Author Rick Schneider reveals through his own eye-opening experiences and observations that when time appears to be limited, hospice care gives you the assistance to do what is most important to you. Simple Human Compassion will illustrate as nothing else can how touch, not technology, is what is needed at the end of life.
