StoryFrames: supporting silent children in the classroom. How does a teacher support a child who has recently arrived at school, speaking another language, and who remains completely silent at school for weeks or months, not participating in class and not even playing with other children? The child's parents often report that the child speaks and plays normally at home, with their family and with other children who speak the child's language. These children, undergoing the "Silent Period", are usually children who have relocated from another country, either voluntarily or as refugees or migrants,. For a variety of reasons, these children do not have the resilience needed to cope with the many changes and anxieties they have experienced. The losses for these children are more than the loss of familiar faces, places and conversations; the loss of their home language is experienced as a loss of the self they had known before the relocation. The psychoanalytic theories of Colette Granger provide a way to understand the experiences of these migrant children. The StoryFrames book sets out an easy-to-follow, low-cost method of supporting these children, enabling them to emerge from their silence, and to play with other children. The book is written by a speech and language therapist, but any teacher, social worker or volunteer, who is experienced in working with young children, can run this programme. The methodology of this programme is grounded in the developmental theories of Winnicott and Vygotsky and as such it stresses the nature and quality of the teacher/child relationship which is at the core of this kind of work. The book explores the feelings not only of the child in this situation, but also of the teacher working with such a child; such a teacher must deal with their own anxieties about what the child is experiencing, and about whether they, as the teacher who is expected to solve these problems, could be doing something different. The StoryFrames method is not only for second language learners. It has been successfully used with children who have a wide range of communication disabilities. Children with Developmental Language Disorder, children who stutter, children with intellectual disabilities and Highly Sensitive Children have all benefited from the use of this programme, which uses narrative and pretend play to help the child to develop linguistic and cognitive skills, as well as to have the confidence needed to communicate with others, in spite of the difficulties. This book is an invaluable source of information for anyone wanting to understand the nature of the teacher or speech therapist's relationship with children with communication difficulties, and should be essential reading for trainee speech and language therapists, as well as for teachers training in early years education.

SCRAPS, the full title being Scientific Charles Recalls a Poetic Stevenson, written by Charles Alexander Stevenson, was an idea the author had recalling and correcting some impressions of his cousin Robert Louis Stevenson and of life in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders, in the 19th century.Much has been published about RLS as a writer, however here we have a first hand account from his cousin, of the young man, his family, within the context of the environment in which he was brought up. Charles Stevenson provides an intimate and authentic description of this Scottish writer in his early years before he became famous. In the latter part of his life, Charles Stevenson, despite his failing health, remained determined that the manuscript of his compiled recollections should be completed as a published book. With the help of his daughter, May (Evelyn Mary Yeoman), he was able to dictate his thoughts, which she would transcribe each day prior to his corrections and amendments. The process ended on Charles' death in 1950 and it is only now that this project has finally come to fruition.

It's 1973 and The Rocky Horror Show is about to be launched onto an unsuspecting world for the first time. Martin Fitzgibbon was the young drummer recruited specifically to play an integral part in the show's success. Here, for the first time, Martin gives his unique insight into how the show and its participants became an overnight success and created a cultural phenomenon which fifty years on still reverberates around the world. But there was a life before and after "Rocky" too, which although not straightforward, was overwhelmingly one of fun, laughter and surprises. Behind The Curtain is a tale of contrasting worlds. Of optimism and resilience when dealing with the challenges of life. The authors intention is to take you into that world and leave you with a smile.

This book began as a series of blog posts, each post based on the most recent Carlisle United match. It charts the club's decline in the 2021-2022 season to a point in February 2022 when the club found itself in the League Two relegation zone. The return of Carlisle-born former manager Paul Simpson saw the club embark on a dramatic revival which resulted in Carlisle United comfortably avoiding relegation. The author was present at many of those games that ensured the team's climb to safety.Following retirement in July 2022, the author was in a position to buy season tickets for himself and his son, meaning that they were able to attend about 75% of the club's games in the 2022-2023 season, clocking up well over 7,000 miles in the process. in addition to the physical journey, It was a remarkable metaphorical journey for the club. Mild expectation grew into optimism, grew into ambition, grew into expectation, before the remarkable denouement that saw Carlisle win an unlikely promotion to League One in the most dramatic fashion, via a penalty shoot-out in the play-off final at Wembley. This book recounts that two-season journey blow-by-blow, each post written within two or three days of the relevant game and not revised with the benefit of hindsight. It is an essential read for any supporter of Carlisle United, but will also resonate with any supporter of a lower-league football club who has endured years (sometimes decades) of disappointment, despair and frustration before achieving that brief, but precious, moment in the sun.

Abandon disbelief, all ye who enter here. Or face problems when you encounter an ancient mariner with no tale worth telling, wild parties at Pooh Corner, John Betjeman moonlighting as a trapeze artist, Shakespeare assembling flat-pack furniture without the Instructions, Pam Ayres and her teeth on Judgement Day, Longfellow's reaction to the gift of a paper-shredder, the real writer of the Bard's plays, Robert Burns as a hater of the haggis, a very seasick John Masefield, the Lady of Shalott with a shotgun, Ogden Nash on the facts of life (no, not those facts), Philip Larkin's views on child carol singers and Noel Coward's on Council flats. This excursion through the left field of English verse also features comments by word-smiths including Old Nokomis, Joan Hunter-Dunn, Wordsworth's ghost, Christopher Robin, Andrew Marvell's coy mistress, Betjeman's bit-swallowing pony, Tennyson's garden-phobic Maud, Cleopatra's Executor, Mrs Polonius, Nigel Molesworth, Maya Angelou's Christmas turkey, Eeyore and a cheese and pickle sandwich.A light-heartedly irreverent read for all but the most po-faced of poetry fans. Several of its poems have already appeared in public, chiefly in The Spectator. From the author of I Think I Thought which laughed wryly at the rites and wrongs of childhood, youth and ageing.

Humanity is in trouble and it's not looking good for our future. The way we use our minds has caused untold damage through personal anxiety, national disruption, and the threat of global annihilation. This book reveals how we innocently misuse our thinking to create emotional and behavioural instability and how to interrupt dysfunctional patterns and experience a higher quality of thought. We explore how present-day spiritually based psychology is re-aligning with ancient biblical principles, providing an opportunity for everyone to participate in change from the inside-out. Unboxing this ancient wisdom reveals that there has always been two conflicting routes to enlightenment operating in our world, both promising a life beyond the material realm, so discernment is required, and this is where the renewed mind will be our guide. To understand the source of these routes and the invisible forces behind them we journey back to the very dawn of the human era, to the first moment humans were offered the choice between spiritual life or death. Back then we made the wrong choice resulting in spiritual isolation and the need to develop a mind suited to self-survival, but the way is still open for redemption and the choice of life or death for all humanity is one for the ages. We each have freedom to choose. It's not too late for renewal of the mind....and the heart and the soul of humanity.

What if you have the chance to live three lives? Which one would you choose? An answer to these thought-provoking questions is at the heart of the intriguing memoir, Essentially: Being Me in a Becoming World. It emerged as a rebirth from the ashes of a near-tragedy and life-defining experience of a single mother as she breaks the barrier of stigma and silence. In the book, the author craftily weaves her intensely personal journey and life-changing experiences as she grapples to find meaning and purpose in a trilogy of lives conflictedly interwoven in one destiny through first choices, second chances and everything in-between.Through the lenses of her personal experiences, she explores themes such as susceptibility, fighting addiction, and aloneness. The book is an open invitation to introspection, self-conversations and self discovery through the turbulent storms and uncharted waters of the inevitability of change.I've learnt that we can only find our authentic selves in vulnerability and only when we find ourselves can we truly find and empower others.

This book has been developing, like an embryo in the womb, for seven years. The first part which was originally called 'Can You Make It Up the Mountain?' was a study of the nature and character of our God so far as He has chosen to disclose it to us through the scriptures. The second part is probably summed up as 'How we should react to what we learned from the ascent of the mountain?' Perhaps subtitled 'The Challenges of Discipleship'. It is inspired by the writings of a 15th century monk, and I suspect, will be a greater challenge than the trek up the mountain. So, this is an account of one man's journey following Christ; out of his love for God and his desire for obedience, he was compelled to undertake this quest with little understanding or just how much he would have to rely on the one he was so desperately seeking. He has likened his journey to that of a mountaineer, and similar to such an adventurer, he learned some hard lessons, had moments of rest and moments of pushing on with great determination. He now invites you to share in his experiences and embark on your own journey up the mountain and into the dark night. Do not think however, that you will be able to make it by relying on your own strength and wisdom; that will come from God. However lonely the climb might be, rest assured that you will never be travelling alone; as promised, the comforter, the Holy Spirit, will be there to guide, encourage, sustain, and motivate you. Please treat this labour of love like a banquet; a feast of exquisite delicacies, each individual dish to be savoured and absorbed before indulging in the next.

Christian and other nurses in the hostile modern and increasingly secular age may feel helpless in an environment that created the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) and continues to foster end of life 'care' through sedation and dehydration. The book aims to enlighten both health professionals and the public alike to their rights of conscience and knowledge of the needs of vulnerable patients whether related to ethical care or guidance and the law which can affect them. Indifference to patients'needs and suffering may be injurious to nurses' health all of whom have a conscience. This must be respected, protected and used as a guide to truly care for the patient's benefit, reqardless of laws and professional pathways which may prove harmful to many vunerable patients. The questioning nurse on ethical issues and dilemmas needs consideration, respect and support when attempting to act as the patient advocate. Managers at all levels need to be aware of the concerns of front line nurses and to be mindful that recruitment and retention are both equally important factors for the quality of patient care and nurse morale and work satisfaction. The NHS was a wonderful creation which is only as good as its staff at all levels. Its managers and government ministers must remember that the more authority invested in them, the more the accountability and transparency expected by both health professionals, their patients and the public.

'When Glass Breaks' is the heart-rending story of Ben Lindenheim, who became separated from his older brother during the Kindertransport, and who lived a life of heroism, trauma, adventure, love, denial, illness, family, failure and lies, but always in the hope of one day being reunited with his brother.Only at the end, does the reader discover the novel is narrated by Helen Painter, as she seeks to piece together fragments of her father's past, most of which he tried to conceal from his family. She knew only that he had a war pension due to a shrapnel injury - he had a scar; that he fought with the Royal Norfolk regiment - or so he said; that he was an army boxing champion - impossible to check out; that he spent a couple of years in South Africa - which may have been true as there were two African-language books on the bookshelves at home; that he was educated at Winchester - but he knew no Latin or Greek; that his family were killed in the Blitz, with one brother dying in North Africa, and which may have included a baby son - something his post-stroke lability let slip; and that he was Jewish - which she knew from her own DNA test, taken long after he died. Nothing much checked out and the family history searches revealed no mention of the surname before his marriage certificate. So, she filled in the blanks, and gave him a past, one which would honour the father with whom she had shared a difficult relationship, largely, she came to acknowledge, due to the psychological scars he bore.¿Anyone who has read 'En Passant' will have become acquainted with Saul Lindenheim, a minor character who has lived for many years with the guilt of being separated from his brother Ben during the Kindertransport and the hope of one day being reunited. 'When Glass Breaks' is the story of Ben's life.

Tigers, Mountains and Pagodasthe story of a special and adventurous life At the end of 1923 Stanley Robins passed out of Sandhurst as a prize-winning cadet. He was commissioned into the North Staffordshire regiment, at the time based in British India. Stanley was "thrilled" at this posting as he saw army service in India as the gateway to a "special and adventurous life"; and so it turned out to be.In India Stanley became an expert and highly knowledgeable big game hunter, especially of tigers, including man-eaters and gained a deep affinity with the Indian Jungle and its wildlife. He became a lifelong friend of Jim Corbett; the greatest of the big game hunters. Like Jim he was to be an advocate for wildlife conservation and condemned post World War II hunting methods, especially in Africa.Army postings sent Stanley to the dangerous and volatile North-West Frontier, where "no man's life was safe". He was decorated for gallantry in one of the hardest fought operations on the Frontier. Despite the dangers of nearly constant action against the war-like border tribes he gained a deep knowledge of its people, the country and the culture.Whenever military postings allowed he was keen to visit and learn about the India that had put a "spell" on him; its varied peoples, culture and history and to visit the areas of India rarely seen by most Europeans. As international tensions grew in the late 1930s Stanley was transferred to what became the 14h Army in Burma, playing a vital part in the Allied fighting withdrawal from the "Land of Pagodas" and was decorated for his distinguished service. He was the last man out of Rangoon and the first through the Taukkyan Roadblock, by which the Japanese army hoped to trap Allied forces in Burma, in their lightning campaign.During the Allied liberation of Burma Stanley was personally selected by General Slim, commander of the 14th Army, to ensure effective, critical and growing logistical support for Allied forces, US, Chinese and British, in their advance against the JapaneseAt Indian independence Stanley's actions and decisions on that day prevented what might have been a massacre of Europeans and loyal Indian Army soldiers at Nagpur.
