While honor has been subject to sociological and anthropological investigations and has garnered attention through media coverage of honor killings, there remained a gap in understanding the nuanced experience of honor, particularly among first-generation Levantine Arab American women.To address this gap, the researcher employed Moustakas' heuristic research design, enabling an in-depth exploration of the experience of honor among this specific demographic. The study's findings reveal that the experience of honor among these women is profoundly intricate. It encompasses various dimensions, ranging from familial and societal to public and private, and from individual to collective. This study demonstrates that the experience of honor is a lifelong journey that commences in early childhood and continues into adulthood, persistently navigating the delicate balance between individual desires and the expectations of family and community.

The Greeks revered Babylon as a symbol of cultural hybridity, where diverse traditions and knowledge intermingled. The city's allure also lay in its capacity to evoke both historical and scientific curiosity, while at the same time sparking the magical and fictional imagination. Within the literary context, Babylon emerged as a space of esoteric wisdom, holding the secrets of ancient knowledge that captured the minds of the learned.

This book delves into the historical evolution of women's rights within the context of Islam, focusing on the period following the rise of the faith during Mohammad's lifetime. While initially witnessing the establishment of certain women's rights, these advancements faced a decline in the aftermath of Mohammad's death. It was during the early Abbasid period, a time of expansive growth for Muslim societies, that Islamic laws and jurisprudence (fiqh) began to take shape, transforming the image of Muslim women to be more in line with the civilized cultures of antiquity, drifting away from the early Muslim community of Medina.

The notion of Palestine, though intangible in the natural world, thrives within the realm of human consciousness. We find ourselves identifying with this place because it bears a name, which holds the key to our connection with it. Unnamed locations, mere coordinates on a map, lack the essence that sparks our emotional ties. However, naming alone does not suffice; we must be immersed in the tales of a place, weaving narratives of famines, wars, conquests, tribes, and multifaceted histories. Through the lenses of geography, economy, archaeology, and myriad other topics, these engaging stories foster our identification with Palestine.

Adolescence is associated with substantial brain reorganization, and therefore presents a unique period of vulnerability to psychiatric disorders but also a window of opportunity for neuroscience-informed interventions to mitigate the risk of full-blown mental disorders. As such, a comprehensive understanding of adolescent normative brain development and its associated factors are crucial. The doctoral work described herein consists of four studies on the normative trajectories of brain structure and the relation of adolescent brain development to perinatal, physical, psychosocial, cognitive, and environmental factors. First, we used the data from the Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) lifespan workgroup to construct normative centile curves of brain regions as well as their variation over time, and their interindividual variability. We then used the IMAGEN longitudinal study of adolescents to characterize the association between developing brain structure and psychopathological traits, neuropsychological measures, and environment using multivariate modeling. We further replicated and expanded on the IMAGEN study by leveraging the phenotypically well-characterized and rich Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study to investigate the correlates of multimodal brain phenotypes. We hope our findings will bridge the critical gap in knowledge to advance a biologically informed understanding of adolescent brain development and will ultimately lend itself to targeted interventions for improving brain and mental health outcomes.
