  • - Rococo Revival
    von Alexander Eiling
    33,00 €

Like hardly any other artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir has shaped our understanding of the atmospheric figure paintings of Impressionism. His painting After the Luncheon, which has been in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt since 1910, is now the starting point for a far-reaching examination of an important source of inspiration that accompanied him throughout his life: the Rococo. Considered frivolous and immoral after the French Revolution, this style of painting experienced a renaissance in the 19th century and was widely celebrated during Renoir's lifetime. Published on the occasion of the Städel Museum's major exhibition, this comprehensive volume explores Renoir's multifaceted connection to tradition through illuminating juxtapositions of his art with 18th-century works and contemporaries. As a trained porcelain painter, PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841-1919) was well acquainted with the motif world of the 18th century. His depictions of intimate domestic scenes and outdoor social gatherings are reminiscent of the pictorial language of the preceding era, such as Jean-Antoine Watteau's Fêtes galantes.

A moving biography - told in vivid pictures. In five chapters, Philipp Deines traces stages in the life of the now world-famous Swedish painter Hilma af Klint. The personal and artistic development of this pioneer of abstraction is illuminated here. In this book, readers discover how the artist worked, lived, and loved, and what influenced her: from the great scientific upheavals to family history, anthroposophy, and spiritualist séances. In the depiction of her spiritual experiences, Deines' visual language is influenced by Klint's fantastic pictorial worlds. Julia Voss, author of the first comprehensive biography of the artist in 2020, was closely involved in the creation of this graphic novel. Biography, art history, and contemporary narrative style merge and complement each other in these magnificent visual worlds. The rediscovery of HILMA AF KLINT (1862-1944) is considered one of the greatest sensations in art in recent years. Her work has been celebrated in international exhibitions, and since then she has finally received due appreciation as a pioneer of abstraction.PHILIPP DEINES (*1980) is an illustrator and artist. He has run an art offspace, creates posters for techno clubs, designs fashion, and exhibits his work in an art context. In 2021, he temporarily moved his studio to the Berlin auction house Grisebach. This is his first graphic novel.

When Aby Warburg left for the United States in September 1895, it was not foreseeable that his search for the symbolic foundations of art would become one of the most fascinating events in the history of his field. Warburg's American journey lasted only months, and his stay in the Pueblo communities only a few weeks, but in 1923 he presented his findings in the groundbreaking lecture on the '"Snake Ritual". Using selected photographs, ethnologic drawings, and numerous documents, this story and picture book details a journey of discovery. It traverses a vast continent of research, showing Warburg's diverse interlocutors-from chiefs to missionaries-and especially his records of dances, ritual objects, and artworks full of symbolic representations. The documents are evidence of the emerging shift in Warburg's scholarly thinking, which would eventually lead to the cross-border cultural comparative methodology for which he is now held in worldwide esteem.ABY WARBURG (1866-1929) founded modern pictorial science with his work. His main theme was the study of the afterlife of antiquity in the Renaissance, which he recorded in his iconic pictorial atlas Mnemosyne. His American voyage is evidence of how early Warburg already directed his gaze beyond the Western cultural context to explore the interplay of myths, images, and rites. UWE FLECKNER (*1961) is one of the acknowledged international experts on Warburg. Since 2004 he has been professor of art history at the University of Hamburg and a member of the board of directors of the Warburg House there. As co-editor of the collected works of Carl Einstein and Aby Warburg, he has produced numerous publications on the subject.

Highways are more than mere traffic routes - they are symbols of speed and mobility; in 1930s Germany, they served propaganda purposes. Today they are central infrastructures. In this volume, photographer Michael Tewes devotes himself to the roads that have relentlessly carved paths across our country and through its nature, as well as to their special architectures. Often perceived as a monotonous stopover for people on their way to a destination, Tewes brings the highway into our conscious perception and shows it as an architectural building form in its own right. This monograph is the result of a six-year project and is published in parallel with the exhibition at the Deutsches Museum in Munich. MICHAEL TEWES is a photographer and artist. He studied in Dortmund, Potsdam, and Chicago. In addition to artistic projects, he works as a photographer for well-known brands. Tewes has won the Körber Fotopreis and the IF Design Award, among others, for his work.

  • - es gibt im Moment keine besseren Kunstler als uns in Deutschland, HP Zimmer, Tagebuch 1957 - 1965
    von NINA ZIMMER NEIL HO
    24,00 €

"I have kept a diary since my school days," HP Zimmer remarked in 1984. This is also true of the time of the artists' group SPUR he co-founded in 1957. He wrote to "seek my own point of view in the midst of often turbulent events and sometimes controversial debates." This book presents representative excerpts from the manuscript, which was reviewed by the artist in the early 1990s. Stylistically aware and (self-) critical, Zimmer comments on the cultural and social climate of postwar Germany. He provides insights into the contemporary German art scene and its European network with close ties to the Situationist International. The debates recorded by Zimmer in his diaries - about painting and artistic freedom as well as revolution, boxing matches, crime series, and the threat of nuclear war - are still strangely relevant to us today.HP ZIMMER (1936-1992) studied at the Hamburg Kunsthochschule and the Munich Kunstakademie in the late 1950s. SPUR, which he co-founded, was one of the first post-war avant-gardes groups in the Federal Republic. In 1982, HP Zimmer became a professor of painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig.

  • - Fliegen im Verbund mit der Nacht
    von Elizabeth Alexander
    20,00 €

This volume accompanies the first major survey of the work of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, a London-born painter and author with roots in Ghana. Around eighty paintings, drawings, and prints from private and public collections in Europe and the United States are assembled here, joining new, previously unseen works. Yiadom-Boakye's main theme is the human being; the women and men, painted with oil or charcoal and pastels, appear to be portraits, but are actually fictions. They are always people of Color-whereby the painter highlights the fact of their absence in European art history. Along with her paintings, the catalogue also features the artist's texts and poems. Accompanying essays by Andrea Schlieker, Isabella Maidment, and American poet Elizabeth Alexander explain Yiadom-Boakye's impressive body of work over the past twenty years. LYNETTE YIADOM-BOAKYE (*1977, London) is a British artist and author known worldwide for her expressive portraits of fictional characters. She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2013 and her work has been seen in many international exhibitions.

Gerhard Richter is one of the most famous painters of our time. Worldwide. His fascinating visual spheres are characterized by a unique originality and quality, in which the abstract and the figural intertwine and permeate each other. This extensive volume of pictures concentrates entirely upon the theme of landscape in Richter's oeuvre. Through this genre, to which Richter has remained loyal for more than sixty years, it is possible to see more than a development in the artist's painting style. There is also a perceptible, genuine independence in many of the works, which makes him one of the most remarkable artists of our day. This book adds to the understanding of the significance and pictorial essence of Richter's art, opening up current insights into the theme of nature and landscape in the twenty-first century.GERHARD RICHTER (*1932) grew up in Dresden and attended the art academy there. With the invention of printing, images and texts were distributed to an extent previously unheard of. Artists such as Nicolaus Gerhaert and Martin Schongauer became widely known and influenced the development of the visual arts throughout Europe and across all genres. • - Furdie Zukunft
von Pierre Restany & Carolin Würfel
    18,00 €

The paintings and architecture by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser are nothing less than revolutionary with respect to nature and individual creativity. His work is not about silent conformity, but about life itself: each individual, in society and in the environment. With their strong, colorful formal vocabulary, Hundertwasser's works allow nature its space. Even beyond his artwork, though, the Austrian environmentalist fought for new ideas and ideals. In many conversations, lectures, letters, and manifestos, he formulated his notions-from recycling, the greening of roofs and façades, and the democratization of living space-in order to lend them weight. What seemed like a utopia to his contemporaries is now urgently virulent and surprisingly current. Commemorating the twentieth anniversary of Hundertwasser's death, this attractive book compiles his statements, excerpts from his manifestos, his paintings, examples of his utopian architecture, and his ideas for the future. FRIEDENSREICH HUNDERTWASSER (1928-2000) is known around the world for his visionary paintings and architecture. His works and essays make up a lively body of contemporary criticism, promoting clear-sighted concepts for changing social and economic circumstances.

Anyone who has ever laughed out loud at Max Kersting's brilliant combinations of word and image has immediately become a fan of his unique and original art. He lends new meaning to found photographs with his added speech and thought bubbles. The newly created word-image relationships are, in their sensitive way, as humorous as they are inimitably profound. This connection applies all the more to his new work, which could be called "purely graphic." Here, Kersting considers the "graphic" in its two meanings of drawing and writing, or symbol. Even Roland Barthes compared the flow of the fountain pen to the pressure of the ballpoint pen. Like brilliant emblems from Kersting's ballpoint pen, the texts are scratched across the paper in brief, marvelously unskilled handwriting, as well as across the existential ground upon which our daily lives occur.MAX KERSTING (*1983, Lippstadt) studied design in Düsseldorf and is an advertising copywriter in Berlin. He and his idiosyncratic style quickly became famous through his found, self-annotated photographs. Kersting lives in Berlin.

    - The Nature of Being, Vol. 6
    von Grey Crawford
    36,00 €

The Nature of Being is the sixth volume from the series of books about the Helsinki School. It concentrates on bringing together the various approaches used by the School's representatives to conceptualize nature visibly. The stated goal is not to limit oneself to purely physical depictions of animals, plants, and landscapes. Nature ought to be expressed through a di¿erent type of unit and with a new way of gauging time. Days, months, and seasons become the points of crystallization for time. Thus, the photographs reflect a Nordic sense about feelings of loneliness, jealousy, or desire. The works provide photographic insight into the complex horizon of emotions that characterize our individual views of nature. They do not portray landscape as such, but the world in which we live.Since the 1990s the name HELSINKI SCHOOL has been used to describe a group of fine art photographers who studied, taught, or graduated from the Aalto University's School of Art, Design and Architecture. The term unites a consistent conceptual approach.EXHIBITIONKunsthalle St. Annen, Lübeck, GermanyJanuary 26-April 26, 2020

Sanna Kannisto's métier is nature photography. Like her role models, she considers herself both a scientist and an artist. And, in fact, her analytical gaze is in no way inferior to her creativity and passion. She creates moments of unusual beauty that also shed light on what has been previously concealed. Kannisto has her own method for taking pictures of birds, photographing the animals in front of a brilliantly lit, white background. Removed from their usual surroundings, every detail appears in matchless clarity, allowing for precise study. At the same time, this results in a unique visual aesthetic: the feathers glow brightly, the beating wings take on a majestic quality, and the deep black eyes of the birds seem to gaze hauntingly at the camera. The patience required to produce these pictures has paid off , since it is hard to imagine more beautiful photographs of birds.SANNA KANNISTO (*1974, Hämeenlinna, Finland) studied photography at the Turku School of Art and Communication and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. • - Interaction of Color. Grundlegung einer Didaktik des Sehens
    von Heinz Liesbrock
    28,00 €

"When someone says, 'red' (referring to a description or a color), and when fifty people are listening, you can expect that fifty people will think of red. You can be sure that all of these reds are different." With the first two sentences that begin a masterpiece of art education, Interaction of Color, it becomes clear how complicated the impact of color and its visual perception can be. First published in 1963 by Yale University Press in a limited serigraph edition with 150 color plates, this text became a mass-market paperback with just a few color plates in 1971. Since then, more than a quarter-million copies of it in various editions have been sold. This influential handbook and teaching tool for artists, instructors, and students is now being republished as a new translation in a much-expanded edition. With a new introduction by Heinz Liesbrock, it contains around sixty illustrations of the color principles Albers used to demonstrate important axioms and rules of color and its effects. As did previous editions, this handbook offers indispensable knowledge for everyone who deals with visual communication. An artist, educator, and color theorist, JOSEF ALBERS (1888-1976) was also a pioneer of twentieth-century modernism. He is known for his comprehensive series of works, Homage to the Square (1950-76) and taught at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, and at Yale University. HEINZ LIESBROCK (*1953) is Director of the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop. He has written extensively on Albers and his impact on art, as well as on Edward Hopper, Walker Evans, and others.

As diverse as the subjects of the pictures are, they still allow us to recognize Eidinger's signature: elements of film and theater unite to form a unique rhythm that transforms the everyday into a paradoxical world essence.
