One of the earliest newspapers for Vermillion County, Indiana, was the Hoosier State. It was bought by Samuel Brenton Davis from Henry D. Washburn in 1868. It was published weekly. The early issues contained practically no local news, their space given to politics and world news. Only rarely was a death given, or a marriage, and then in the shortest possible manner. The retail advertising was almost entirely of Terre Haute stores. The style of the newspaper gradually changed and in the 1870s, local births, marriages, deaths, and business happenings began to appear. In addition to the abundance of names and relationships, news articles tell us a lot about the customs, lifestyles, and priorities of the times. Voter lists, orphan records, lists of unclaimed letters, teacher and student lists, real estate transfers, and court happenings are among the items covered. In the 1880s, several correspondents from the local towns sent in local news. Not only did the newspaper contain information for Vermillion County, but the surrounding counties - Warren, Fountain, Parke, and Vigo - can also be found as well. Since Vermillion County, Indiana, and Vermilion County, Illinois, are right next to each other, be sure to check that county also. Quite often, families would visit or send letters from where they came from or where they moved to. The early newspapers are a gold mine to the genealogist. They contain information that you cannot find anywhere but in the local newspaper.

The Overseers of the Poor were gentlemen and property owners selected by the county court to protect the poor and indigent of the county. They were responsible for setting the Poor Rate and seeing that it was collected; from that, they received a payment for their services and allotted monies to assist persons in need. This book covers most of the first fifty years of Cabell County's existence (the period under Virginia control).

  • - Special Agent Horace B. Durant's 1907 Durant Roll Field Notes
    von Raymond C Lantz
    61,00 €

All the information contained in this book has been transcribed from hand written notes compiled by Special Indian Agent Horace B. Durant, who was assigned the task of taking the Census of August, 1, 1908 of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indian Tribes of Michigan. In his search for all the living descendants of those found alive in the 1870 Census, Durant accumulated a wealth of useful genealogical information in addition to that which was used to construct the 1908 Census. His field notes contain information regarding all the known descendants that were not alive in 1908 and a considerable amount of correspondence relating to all the known descendants (both living and dead), which was not a part of the 1908 Census information. He also provided extensive cross-referencing throughout his notes showing relationships and references made to them by others in correspondence received by him. Entries are numbered and include the name, age, place of residence, marital status, name of spouse, names of children, and author's notes. For those who are researching their Ottawa and Chippewa ancestry, this book holds a wealth of invaluable and necessary information, which is a must for even the most casual researcher.

This is the fifth and final volume of the title series by this compiler, and it documents over 12,000 burials, mostly shown on monuments, in Alexandria National (Soldiers) Cemetery, St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery, and the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery. Included is an addendum to previously published volumes. When combined with earlier volumes in the series, the compiler has now presented information for approximately 45,000 burials within the present city limits of Alexandria, Virginia. Each featured cemetery is presented with details about its historical background, structure, and available records. Entries are presented as a complete inscription as suggested by the Association for Gravestone Studies. The text contains frequent commentary about occupations, residences, and family connections of the deceased. Also, a number of diagrams, maps and photographs contain additional useful data. Partial data for the Alexandria National (Soldiers) Cemetery may be found on the Internet, as was published in 1866 by the U.S. Quartermaster's Department. However, one will find major differences between the Quartermaster's data, the cemetery's database (now maintained in Culpeper, Va.), and actual tomb stone inscriptions. The information is presented here in the order that monuments appear, row by row. Perhaps the most significant element of this volume is that it contains previously unpublished burial data obtained from St. Mary's Catholic Church. Presented is information for nearly 400 unmarked burials and deaths, recorded between 1829 and 1852, from the records of St. Mary's Catholic Church-including the deaths of two Revolutionary War soldiers, Pierre LeCroix and Francis Ignatius Hagan. The author has compiled over 65 publications that provide researchers data about Alexandria, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and other nearby locations. These include information about area cemeteries, marriage and death records, estate records, legislative petitions, property and land records, newspapers, and more.

  • - A Brief History of the Orphan Trail Era (1854-1929) with Entrance Records from the American Female Guardian Society's Home for the Friendless in New York, Volume 1
von Tom & Ril (Brighton Polytechnic) Riley
    34,00 €

New York City in the nineteenth century could be a brutal place for a child. A magnet to immigrants and the poor in search of jobs, the city was also a haven for gamblers, thieves and murderers. When adults fell victim to alcoholism, prostitution or drug addiction, their children were the ones who suffered the most. Temperance organizations such as the American Female Guardian Society stepped in, establishing orphanages and homes for unwed mothers and battered women: "homes for the friendless." Some of the children in the homes were orphans, but some were "surrendered" by parents who were unable to take care of them. Nearly 250,000 of these children were fostered out to families across the United States via the "orphan trains." Recently several Orphan Train Rider organizations have been formed, providing opportunities for the riders to reunite with family and loved ones, and to seek sources that provide clues to their roots. This book contains valuable entrance records from several of the surrender books of the AFGS Home for the Friendless in New York. Volunteers from the Orphan Train Heritage Society of America painstakingly indexed the surrender books, which had been left to the Rockland County Historical Society. Perhaps these records hold the key to your past! The Orleans County Genealogical Society held an Orphan Train Reenactment in Medina, New York, in 2004. Photos of that event illustrate the emotional journey of the Orphan Train Riders.

Information found in these land commission records relates to the appointment of persons (Commissioners) to investigate the requests of land owners or other interested parties (Petitioners) in the establishment, or re-defining, of lost, destroyed or otherwise unknown natural boundary markers (normally trees) of various tracts or parcels of land in colonial Baltimore County (which included part of present day Anne Arundel County and all of Harford County). The names of many early settlers who gave testimony (deposition) to their knowledge of the land and its bounds are available to the genealogical researcher in these records. In almost every case, the age of the deponent is given, and many of the depositions reveal other useful data such as names of fathers and mothers and other family members. This information was abstracted by the late Dr. Richard Miller and donated to the Baltimore County Genealogical Society. His notes were spot-checked by the Publication Committee against the originals. An index to names and places adds to the value of this work.
