  • von Kevin Muriithi Ndereba
    33,00 €

Divided into four major sections, this textbook provides an in-depth exploration of the biblical, philosophical, cultural, and practical concerns facing African Christians as they proclaim and defend the gospel in Africa. Written by a diverse group of pastors and scholars, it provides a much needed interdisciplinary and contextualized approach to apologetics. It also seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and ministry practice, touching on such topics as hermeneutics, biblical criticism, church history, the nature of evil, religious inclusivism, Muslim-Christian engagement, eldership rites, domestic violence, cults, and the digital age. Biblically robust, contextually relevant, ministry-oriented, and accessible, this is a remarkable resource for enriching the life and ministry of Christians in Africa and beyond.

  • von Samuel Waje Kunhiyop

God is eternal, but the questions we ask about him are always rooted in our own culture. Thus our understanding of theology is also rooted in our culture. Dr Samuel Kunhiyop is deeply aware of this, and so has produced African Christian Theology as a companion book to his African Christian Ethics. In this book, Dr Kunhiyop addresses many of the same issues mentioned in Western systematic theologies, but also addresses issues that are not mentioned in those books, including the spirit world, ancestors, and the power of blessings and curses. This book thus constitutes an excellent introduction to systematic theology in relation to the traditional African world view and to the Bible.

The translation of Scripture into non-European languages has been an essential undertaking of the modern missionary movement. However, when translators cling to the ideal of scholarly objectivity or fail to interrogate the lenses through which they view Scripture and the world, they risk perpetuating a belief in the West's political, cultural and epistemological superiority, with dangerous consequences for the good news of the gospel. This study provides detailed historical accounts of the origins of two of Africa's most revered vernacular Bibles: the Efik Bible of modern-day Nigeria and the Nyanja Bible of Southern Africa. It illustrates the nature and challenges of early missionary translation work, highlighting the impact of particular translation theories and tracing the development of modern approaches. Evaluating Hugh Goldie's and Robert Law's translation practices against the interwoven backdrop of imperialism, the modern missionary movement and the Enlightenment's belief in objectivity, Dr. Misheck Nyirenda demonstrates how the missionaries' presuppositions often dominated their projects at the expense of African agency and epistemology. Issuing a powerful warning for those involved in the vast ongoing task of translating Scripture into the world's vernacular languages, Nyirenda reminds us that we must first reckon with our social, cultural and historical embeddedness when seeking to communicate gospel truth across linguistic or cultural barriers.

His knowledge of traditional African beliefs and value adds depth to his discussion of the origin, nature, effects and power of sin in our lives. He shows the relevance of each member of the Holy Trinity to our struggle against the root sins of self-centredness and pride, greed and lust, and anxiety and fear.

  • von Godwin O. Adeboye
    27,00 €

The belief in curses is widespread in Africa, impacting the lived reality of both Christians and non-Christians alike. In this book, Godwin Adeboye provides practical, biblical, and contextual guidelines for addressing the African conception of cursing, and for ministering to the fear and confusion such cursing elicits. He argues that African evangelical theology must begin by understanding, and valuing, the unique experiences of African Christians if it is to offer relevant answers to the real dilemmas they face. To this end, Adeboye draws on African traditional beliefs, empirical research, and the teachings of popular African pastors to provide insight into the religious and cultural contexts of the contemporary African church. Against this backdrop, he explores biblical passages on cursing and utilizes the evangelical positions on biblical authority, the atonement, personal conversion, and active mission to evaluate cultural beliefs and bring them into alignment with the gospel. While this text is an excellent resource for students of theology, missiology, and biblical or cultural studies, it is also immensely practical and deeply pastoral. Ultimately, it is a book to empower believers to confront their fear of curses equipped with the truth of Scripture.

  • von Bitrus A. Sarma
    33,00 €

If the New Testament records the good news that the Messiah came in the person of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, what good news does it proclaim to the church in Africa today?Across the African continent, nations are grappling with issues of genocide, terrorism, political instability, ethnic division, abject poverty, environmental degradation, and the rapid erosion of community life and values. There is a dire need for New Testament theology that seriously addresses these social-political realities from an African perspective. Dr. Bitrus Sarma seeks to meet this need, providing a contextual understanding of the gospel for African Christians. Addressing every book of the New Testament, Drums of Redemption is contextually relevant, biblically rooted, and radically hope-filled as it casts a vision for how Christ's redemptive mission can be experienced in every area of life. An excellent resource for church leaders in training or those already in ministry, it also serves as a powerful example of the incarnational nature of God's word.
