Although he put an immense personal effort in the cause of abolishing the British triangle trade, Thomas Clarkson tends to be overshadowed by his better known fellow-abolitionist William Wilberforce. Unjustly so - while Wilberforce acted as the abolitionist movement's spokesperson in parliament, Clarkson travelled enormous distances through all of England in search of public support for the abolitionist movement. His various essays and pamphlets made Clarkson the ideological mastermind of the British antislavery movement.Until the present day, Both Clarkson and Wilberforce rank among the saints of antislavery hagiography. Many scholars, however, have set out to discuss British antislavery in a critical way. This book examines in depth three of Clarkson's essays (An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species - 1786; An Essay on the Impolicy of the African Slave Trade - 1788; Thoughts on the Necessity of Improving the Condition of the Slaves in the British Colonies - 1823) and shows changes in style and ideas. Helmut Meier tries to exemplify the links of abolitionist discourse and ideology to such phenomena as the rising of a new capitalist order in the late 18th and early 19th century, the Industrial Revolution, the emerging Imperialism of the period and the connected proliferation of abolitionist ideas around the world.

The Russian nationalist idea, considered a marginal tendency in the 1990s, has, during the last years, transformed into an official state and widely popular ideology. The Russian political spectrum is unified in its promotion of a discourse grounded in undisguised anti-Westernism as well as the paranoid view that national unity and authenticity are threatened by various external and internal enemies. The space of political representation has become increasingly covered by nationalism to the point that it is today regarded a "politically correct" attitude in Russia. Nationalist and, in some cases, crypto-fascist factions operate in all major political parties of Russia today.The government actively contributes to promoting this trend through introducing patriotic education at school, revitalizing anti-Americanism as a foreign policy doctrine, new national holidays and commemorations, a growing cult of the military, frequent references to Orthodoxy, utilizing ultra-nationalist groupings in its manipulation of public life through "political technology", and essentializing "ethnic rights" of the national subjects of the Federation. The media has come to play a crucial role in the dissemination of cryptic and, sometimes, manifestly nationalist ideas. The submission of most major mass media outlets to the authorities highlights the "fourth power's" status as a proponent of nationalist discourse in its own right. The media has been playing an increasing role in exacerbating xenophobic tensions within Russian society.This nationalist climate is not restricted to politics and journalism, but is also to be found in numerous sections of cultural and academic life. Thus, in Russia today, apart from various cases of para-science and alternative history, the notion that certain academic disciplines have the mission to justify "Russian specificity" is widespread among scholars, as are approaches, defined as "civilizationist," that systematize national stereotypes. Der Band Pan- und Raetoromanica enthält eine Auswahl von 37 Aufsätzen, die Maria Iliescu in den letzten 40 Jahren verfasst hat (1964 - 2003). Die Beiträge wurden nicht chronologisch, sondern thematisch geordnet und in ihrer ursprünglichen Form wiedergegeben. Der Band besteht aus zwei Teilen: Der erste ist der Allgemeinen Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft, der zweite den rätoromanischen Idiomen (die in Graubünden, in den Dolomiten und in Friaul gesprochen werden) gewidmet. Es werden sowohl typologisch-klassifikatorische als auch (moderne) theoretische Fragestellungen erörtert. Der zweite Teil enthält auch ein Vokabular von über 1000 repräsentativen Lemmata der wichtigsten rätoromanischen Mundarten, ausgehend von ihrem jeweiligen Etymon.Das Buch richtet sich an alle synchron und diachron orientierten Romanisten sowie an Linguisten, die an den romanischen Sprachen im Allgemeinen und an den drei rätoromanischen Idiomengruppen im Besonderen interessiert sind.

The essays in this collection attest to the richness of the double motif in literature and philosophy. Veering away from predominantly psychoanalytical readings of narratives which foreground the double (or doppelganger), which have formed the basis of much scholarly discussions of this motif, the contributions in this volume privilege divergent philosophical leanings - ranging from Rousseau to Kierkegaard, from Christian philosophy to Eastern mysticism - to elicit the layered nuances and signifiers of this elusive motif. Narratives interrogated in this collection include the works of Dickens, Blanchot, Edmund Jabés, Orhan Pamuk, Chuck Palahniuk and Don Delillo, among others.

This book represents a collection of the results of four empirical studies of ethnic and religious hate speech in Russia in 2001-2004. Several Russian non-governmental organizations took part in the project. The major part of the research was done by Alexander Verkhovsky and Galina Kozhevnikova (Sova Center). Further contributions were made by Tatyana Lokshina and Sergey Lukashevsky (formerly, Moscow Helsinki Group; now Demos Center) and Ksenya Izotova and Valeriya Akhmetyeva (Sova Center).The contributions analyze and compare with each other dynamics of the development of hate speech according to such parameters as groups that are the objects of intolerance, permutations of hate speech, types of people who voice intolerant views, etc. These phenomena were studied in politically relatively calm periods as well as in times of raising intolerance after the terrorist acts in Moscow 2002 and Beslan in 2004. Special research was devoted to hate speech during the federal electoral campaigns of late 2003 - early 2004. This allows the authors to make some conclusions about the dependence of hate speech on events such as the above.

This scholarly study of the formation of the Irish literary canon in the first half of the twentieth century provides fascinating and often surprising insights into the ways in which different educational institutions responded to the political and historical changes taking place as Ireland moved from colonial to postcolonial status. This book discusses a number of issues concerning the service of the nationalities of the Caucasus in the Red Army within the context of Soviet nationality policies and an intensification of repressive tendencies in the USSR's armed forces during World War II. It is the first study of the role and function of the Caucasian national troops in the Red Army and of related political debates between state and military leaders of the Caucasian national republics and USSR. The political aspects of the mobilization of various Caucasian nationalities in the army, and the reasons for the gradual cessation, in the course of 1941-1943, of the mobilization in the Red Army of all native nationalities of the Northern and Southern Caucasus are analyzed, in particular.The study is based on documents from the Central Archive of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation, Russian State Archive of Social and Political History and Russian State War Archive, as well as on various memoirs and secondary sources.

Based on extensive archival research and, in particular, on documents of the Central Committee of the VKP(b), TsIK and SNK of the USSR and RSFSR, VSNKh, NKVD, and other institutions, this book analyses the aims and methods of pre-World War II urban housing policies in the Soviet Union. Among the issues covered are the principles of the Soviet approach to private and communal housing, the role of the state security organs in the administration and distribution of accommodation, different types of early Soviet lodging (communal houses, family flats, Soviet Houses and Hotels, etc.), the reasons for the abandonment of cooperative housing as well as for the restrictions on building private cottages, and the role of housing for enforcing certain types of behaviour and labour desired by the Soviet government. The study, for the first time in Russian language, describes in some detail the so-called New Housing Policy largely ignored in Soviet historiography.

Die Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich werden zum Teil noch immer von Vorurteilen geprägt: Als Konrad Adenauer am 14. September 1958 zu der ersten Begegnung mit de Gaulle nach Colombey fuhr, hatten er und auch seine Begleiter schwere Bedenken. Der alte Kanzler hatte dem Urteil der Fachleute vertraut und fürchtete, daß de Gaulle "antideutsch" eingestellt sei und "eine Verständigung mit ihm außerordentlich schwierig" wäre. Offenbar hatte aber niemand die Schriften des Generals zur Kenntnis genommen. Schon 1924 sprach dieser in seinem ersten Buch "Über die Zwietracht beim Feind" davon, daß das deutsche Volk wegen seiner Haltung im Krieg selbst bei den Feinden "Erstaunen und Bewunderung" hervorgerufen habe. Enge Mitarbeiter de Gaulles und selbst sein Sohn - in den Erinnerungen an den Vater von 2004 - bestätigen es: Zu keinem anderen Land besaß der General eine so enge Affinität und Sympathie wie für den deutschen Gegner. Glücklicherweise hat wenigstens Adenauer sehr schnell begriffen, wie falsch er informiert worden war. Umgekehrt täuschte sich auch de Gaulle, als ihm vier Jahre später die Menschen in Deutschland zujubelten: Bei Abschluß des deutsch-französischen Vertrages kurz nach seiner Reise durch das Nachbarland hatte er nicht erkannt, daß die Bundesrepublik wegen Berlin den Schutz der USA nicht entbehren konnte. So kam es, daß der Vertrag vom Bundestag mit der berühmten Präambel entwertet wurde. Die Liste der Irrtümer auf beiden Seiten ließe sich verlängern über Mitterrands Verhalten 1989/90 hinaus bis in die Gegenwart. Man kannte sich immer zu wenig, und kennt sich auch jetzt noch nicht genug, und viel Unverständnis beruht auf der Unkenntnis der Geschichte des Partners. Die deutsche Vergangenheit mit ihrer bis auf den heutigen Tag polyzentrischen Entwicklung ist im Nachbarland schwer zu vermitteln. Auf deutscher Seite ist die französische Geschichte mit ihrer fast linearen Herausbildung des zentralisierten Nationalstaates wenig bekannt. Auf beiden Seiten des Rheins leben daher die Vorurteile fort. Dies ist um so bedauerlicher, als die Entwicklung in Europa gerade von unseren beiden Ländern eine enge und ungestörte Zusammenarbeit erfordert.

Das Theater der Unterdrückten erlebt in Deutschland eine Renaissance, nachdem es jahrelang in sozialpädagogischen Nischen verschwand. Die emanzipatorische Theatermethode, die in sich Kunst, Selbsterfahrung und psycho-soziales sowie (sozial-) politisches Probehandeln miteinander verbindet, will benachteiligten, diskriminierten oder sonstwie unterdrückten Menschen theatrale Ausdrucksmittel übereignen. Die Übertragung von Problemen in die ästhetische Theaterarbeit eröffnet Möglichkeiten der Distanzierung und schafft gedankliche und emotionale Freiräume für die Veränderungen im Alltag oder für gewaltfreie Aktionsformen.Der Sammelband bietet den Leser/innen Beispiele der Umsetzung dieser Idee, die Partei ergreift, anhand von Projekt-, Gruppen- und Workshopberichten im deutschen und europäischen Kontext. Es finden sich auch grundsätzliche Beiträge, u.a. werden die Rolle des Humors sowie partizipative Ansätze im Forumtheater und Aktionstheaterformen diskutiert. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Buches ist die Darstellung der Theater-Arbeit im interkulturellen Kontext.Mehrere Beiträge aus anderen Ländern zeigen, wie verbreitet die Methode ist und wie vernetzt Praktiker/innen in einigen anderen europäischen Ländern (Beispiele: Holland, Österreich, Italien, Kroatien) mit ihr arbeiten.

Diese Monographie stellt eine tiefgehende Fallstudie des 2014 begonnenen Reformprozesses in der Ukraine dar. Sie diskutiert sowohl die politisch-ökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen als auch die vielfältigen Hindernisse, welche die angelaufene tiefgehende Umgestaltung von Staat, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft der Ukraine erschweren. Neben den Grundlagen der Transformation in Osteuropa und Ursachen für das Ausbleiben einer umfassenden Modernisierung der Ukraine vor 2014 steht die Umsetzung der Reformen seither im Mittelpunkt. Hierzu wird eine Reihe von Reformagenden aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln diskutiert und mit den bisherigen Ergebnissen abgeglichen. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auch auf den Anliegen der Zivilgesellschaft sowie Forderungen internationaler Akteure. So werden ¿ vier Jahre nach dem Euromaidan ¿ Erfolge und Rückschläge in den zentralen Politikfeldern nachvollziehbar. Die Untersuchung vermittelt nicht nur einen Eindruck von der Komplexität und Langfristigkeit der Transformationsprozesse. Sie ordnet auch die bisherigen Ergebnisse der Reformbemühungen in ein Gesamtbild ein und erklärt den jeweils spezifisch ukrainischen Kontext. Kernbeitrag ist eine datenbasierte Analyse der ersten Phase der begonnenen Neuformierung der öffentlichen Verwaltung, anhand derer die Schwierigkeiten einer Umsetzung weitreichender Modernisierungsvorhaben illustriert werden. Das Buch ist die erste derartige längere Studie in deutscher Sprache. Sie wendet sich in erster Linie an Entscheidungsträger, Journalisten und Forscher, die sich ein genaueres Bild über den Stand des ukrainischen Reformprozesses machen und die Ursachen für dessen oft unvorhersehbaren Verlauf besser verstehen wollen.
