The book is divided into 20 chapters, ordered to cover general concepts in analytical chemistry: procedures based on wet chemistry and optical spectroscopy; the techniques of arc and spark emission spectrometry and ion-selective electrodes; and X-ray and micro-beam procedures.

In the decade since the first edition of this book was published advances have been made in our knowledge of the fresh waters of the world, espe cially in understanding many of the processes involved in their functioning as systems and in countering the problems created by human activities.

Understanding concepts that would someday help geologists to find new mineral deposits or exploit the known ones more efficiently have always been, and will continue to be, at the core of any course on mineral deposits, but it is a fascinating subject in its own right, even for students who do not intend to be professional economic geologists.
