  • - An A to Z of Kun Homophones
    von Jack Halpern
    24,00 €

Kun homophones--native-Japanese words that are pronounced alike but are written with different kanji, and often differ in meaning--pose a particular challenge to students at the intermediate level. Words like noboru or kaeru, for example, can be written with several different kanji, each contributing a distinct shade of meaning. The often-subtle nuances conveyed by kanji confuse even Japanese people, and very few dictionaries provide good guidance on kanji usage. The Kodansha Kanji Usage Guide is a new type of reference work that enables learners to deepen their understanding of how kun homophones are used in contemporary Japanese. The first Japanese-English resource devoted exclusively to kun homophones, the book presents detailed usage articles that show the differences and similarities for 675 homophone groups, or 1590 kanji headings--the vast majority of single-character kun homophones in current use. With headwords arranged in Japanese a-i-ue-o order and thousands of illustrative examples of kanji in context, the Usage Guide is at once a dictionary and a manual--an all-around resource for clarity on kanji used in kun homophones. Armed with this unique guide, learners will discover in kanji new meanings they never knew existed, and learn to write Japanese more articulately than ever before.

AD 2019: The year the world caught up to AKIRA. Two years before this milestone, author Katsuhiro Otomo worked with artist Kosuke Kawamura to enrobe a Tokyo city block in a collage of gripping moments from the manga that revolutionized an art form. Then, over the next two years, he did it twice more. The result: three electifying compilations of Otomo''s art, meandering across the city. And now you can take them home. From 2017-2019, the throngs passing through Tokyo''s emblematic Shibuya neighborhood were lucky enough to witness a massive art project. The PARCO department store was closed for renovation, and Katsuhiro Otomo and collage artist Kosuke Kawamura seized on the opportunity to stretch Otomo''s landmark manga AKIRA across the barriers separating the construction site from the bustling nightlife of Shibuya, Tokyo.  When the project was completed, it was 2019: the very year the story of AKIRA began. To commemorate this milestone, a silver foil-coated collector''s box presents an exquisite reproduction of Otomo and Kawamura''s work, with the specifications overseen and approved by Otomo-sensei personally. Nearly 75 feet (22.7 meters) of illustrations, speech balloons, and text selected from AKIRA''s six volumes stretch across three accordion-bound volumes. A fourth volume includes an exclusive interview with Otomo and Kawamura, as well as photographs of the original exhibition by award-winning photographer TAKAMURADAISUKE. Rounding out the box is a dramatic, 16.5x23.4-inch poster. In this form, Kawamura''s recontextualization of Otomo''s manga is reminiscent of traditional Japanese emaki (picture scrolls), the narrative scrolls that some scholars see as manga''s most ancient ancestors. Don''t miss this change to own a singular artifact in the history of anime and manga. Contains  •  Scroll 1: Oct. 25, 2017-May 15, 2018. 29.3 feet (8.94 meters).  •  Scroll 2: May 16, 2018-Feb. 27, 2019. 22.6 feet (6.88 meters).  •  Scroll 3: Feb. 28, 2019-Aug. 8, 2019. 22.6 feet (6.88 meters).  •  430 x 607 mm poster  •  52-page hardcover catalog book including new interviews with Katsuhiro Otomo and Kosuke Kawamura and photographs by TAKAMURADAISUKE  •  Rigid, silver cold foil-wrapped box

Now available with a free audio download, this outstanding collection of essays by Japan’s leading writers, in vertical text with translations, notes, allows readers to experience the work as a native speaker would. There is a dramatic difference between reading Japanese that is tailored to students—and reading real Japanese that has been written for native speakers. The concocted variety tends to be insipid, flat, stiff, standardized, completely lacking in exciting and imaginative use of language. Read Real Japanese Essays, and its companion volume Read Real Japanese Fiction, allows readers to experience the work of several of today’s foremost writers as if they were lifelong Japanese speakers. The pieces in Read Real Japanese Essays are informed by the personalities of the writers: Haruki Murakami, Banana Yoshimoto, Mitsuyo Kakuta, Junko Sakai, Yoko Ogawa, Kou Machida, Keiichiro Hirano and Hideo Levy. By turns humorous, serious, beautiful and biting, they have been selected on the basis of their appeal. All are stimulating works that will motivate readers to want more.Just like real Japanese books, the text in this collection runs from top bottom and from right to left. For those needing backup, the essays have been supplemented with facing-page translations of the phrases used therein. In the back of the book, moreover, is a built-in Japanese-English learner’s dictionary and a notes section covering issues of nuance, usage, grammar and culture that come up in each essay. Best of all, the book comes with a free audio download containing narrations of the essays, performed by a professional voice actress. This will help users to become familiar with the sounds and rhythms of Japanese, as well as the speed at which the language is normally spoken.
