A quarter-life crisis had crept into Steve's whitespace while he sat, coding in his ergohuman chair at a successful biz-tech company in Silicon Valley. He was about to turn thirty and his simple life of work, alcohol and music festivals was being body-snatched by an unknown entity.Steve says that when you hit your late twenties, you will likely go through the five stages of leaving your twenties, all of which include various manifestations along the anxiety continuum: 1 - Denial, alcohol, and gaming2 - Anger, getting high on weed, alcohol, and gaming3 - Bargaining and travel to Peru to live simply and take ayahuasca4 - Introspection and discovering shrooms5 - Reluctant outward acceptance and denial resulting in assorted anxiety disorders And with that, you are an adult. Have a nice day.Running with Chickens is about a journey-a hysterical, witty, and charming exploration of the disillusionment and enlightenment that drove a monumental life-change. Take a ride inside the irreverent and mutinous mind of a thirty-something tech coder-guy that decided to get off the hamster wheel, buy property in Costa Rica and turn it in to a farm-all with little money but a lot of will.At a young age, he realized he had to grow up fast as a tumultuous divorce broke up his family, the diagnosis of ADD disrupted his school life, and the challenges of growing up with non-conforming attitudes and ideas impacted his daily existence. He says now, that adaptation is the new sim card and that it is the only way to survive in a radically changing world.Steve calls the book a data-dump of randomness exposed while trying to define the reality of his insecurities and anxieties. He provides his take on your Facebook posts, his own theory of enlightenment, managing his crazy family, millennials vs. baby boomers, women, men, and topics that will amuse or offend just about everyone. He adds a few words of caution: If certain words not found in the dictionary are offensive to you, he suggests you don't read the book and asks you to go back to playing with the dog.

His t-shirt draped casually off the back of the chair that stood in front of the window. I held the shirt up to my nose and between sips of coffee and staring out across the dunes to the beach beyond; I breathed him in and lingered on the faint smell of cardamom and his musky sweat. The night before, I sat across the kitchen counter from him and watched him cook Indian food while we laughed at a few random comments and gifs on Twitter and talked about nothing much at all that was important. It had been five months since I first met Josh at the cast meeting for the movie-a romance between two men filmed in Santa Cruz, California, and the day that changed everything for us. For the first two months, we spent nearly every moment together, filming during the day and growing into each other every night. Cast as the leads in the steamy film, our on-screen romance quickly evolved into an intimate bond and ignited an off-screen passion. After the filming ended, the producers decided not to cut some of the scenes and suddenly we had an R rating and a popular movie with the early pre-release screeners, but the media and critics believed we lied to get the parts and were eager to find fault-or at least a steamy story good for a few news cycles. We had retreated to Portugal together to relax after the filming ended, or were we trying to escape the rumors that had started? But we were about to be discovered. A near drowning incident at our local beach thrust us into the spotlight as heroes in Portugal while exposing our whereabouts and relationship in the US media. We had decisions to make. Our on-screen love affair that had blossomed to a real-life romance might be good for movie publicity, but exposing it will come at the cost of our privacy. It was time to go home and face the music.

Friday 5:30 AM. I woke up as if I chose to. I looked over to see him still in front of my fireplace, sleeping. Josh, my costar in our romance movie, had been sleeping on the floor of my bedroom every night for two weeks. I had offered him one of my other bedrooms. He said he liked to wake in the middle of the night and hear me breathing. Then he winked and smiled. That smile that pushed those dimples into his cheeks and made this lapis blue eyes light up in the slim morning light."Maybe then I can make you fall in love with me." But that was Josh. He had a way of throwing words like flowers in the air, not expecting them to be caught. In two weeks, we had become best friends and I could see into him now. He was flirting with me. And I liked it.That was not how I expected the year to begin that New Year's morning waking up with Olivia, a woman I barely knew. She was beautiful, but mostly a distraction. I was feeling like a dragon-a young man with no fire. But Josh had awakened something new in me. I didn't know it that day, but I was already falling in love with him.
