"After nearly 30 long and disastrous years of military rule in Nigeria from 1966 to 1999 (less only four wobbly years of civilian interregnum from 1979 to 1983), the culture of constitutionalism in the country has become brutally defaced, degraded and obscured. The return of constitutional government in May 1999 marked a new beginning for virtually everybody - the politicians, the legislators, the students, the academia and all. No wonder that all levels of government - Federal, State and Local Government - the nation has been experiencing a rattling bustle of intergovernmental disputation as to the limits of power and the dos and don'ts of governmental action...The essays are written primarily for university law students and students in other tertiary institutions studying constitutional law...The book thus serves an important need to make academic materials available to such students in these days of harrowing book scarcity in the country. But the essays will also reward reading by politicians and others, including lawyers, who may want or need to read up elements of constitutional law or to brighten their dimming knowledge of rudiments of the subject," - Professor Charles Ilegbune, University of Abuja, Nigeria Definitions and Forms of Constitutional Law Common Constitutional ConceptsHistorical Development of Nigerian Constitutional LawFundamental Objectives and Concept of Citizenship Under Nigerian ConstitutionReflections on the Nature of Fundamental Rights Legislative Powers Under Nigerian ConstitutionScope of Executive Powers Under Nigerian ConstitutionJudicial Powers and Concept of Judicial Independence under Nigerian ConstitutionLegal Effect of Change of Government by Extra-Constitutional Means (Coup D'état)Proceedings By and Against the State

  • von Femi Olugbile
    35,00 €

Péléwúra is the dramatized story of a true-life character who rose from humble beginnings to become the most powerful woman in Lagos. It is also the story of Lagos of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The town was a rich potpourri of indigenous people, mostly of Awori descent, and Yoruba returnees from slavery-experience in Brazil and other places, as well as people from other parts of the Northern and Southern Protectorates. Born into this diverse ferment, the unlettered daughter of a fishmonger, Péléwúrà grew into her own through the sheer force of her personality, and her native intelligence. As the politics of the nascent Nigerian nation began to take shape, she positioned herself and her market women's association to play crucial roles. Her friendship with such figures as Governor Bernard Bourdillon, Herbert Macaulay and Nnamdi Azikiwe, and her role in the formation of the first national political party, NCNC, were the stuff of legend. PELEWURA tells the story of how a remarkable woman helped in shaping the history of her town, and her people. This is an engaging literary reconstruction of a historical figure, Alimotu Péléwúrà, 1865-1951, by Femi Olugbile. Steeped in historical awareness, Olugbile's vivid imagination sees a wonderful woman in the mirror and makes her come alive on the page with all her integrity and grandeur. In the context of the political history of Lagos and the participation of other prominent Lagosians, he seamlessly traces her interesting life from her humble beginning in Isale Eko through her many fierce and impactful struggles against the unremitting oppression of the British rule of the Lagos Colony right down to her glorious end. She was the founder of the Lagos Market Women's Association with the solid and strategic support of Herbert Macaulay. She was also a pioneer member of the Nigerian National Democratic Party, NNDP. She was a highly regarded Erelu lyaloja of Lagos and an extraordinary mentor. Abibat Mogaji, who succeeded her, was one of her mentees. Although she did not have her own biological children, Olugbile's defining portrait of her as a lover of other people's children, a people's person, kind-hearted and generous, is very moving and profoundly humanising. This book, which can be read as history or as fiction or as a faction, is by turns direct, passionate, thrilling, thoughtful and lucid. - Kunle Ajibade, Author of Jailed for Life: A Reporter's Prison Notes

The book offers additional reading in areas not covered by existing texts on Nigerian Law and will be useful not only to students but to practitioners and researchers seeking information on aspects of Nigerian Law. The beauty of Themes on the Nigerian Legal System lies in two most appealing facts one, that it is a contribution from learned authors who are not only specialists in the specific area of Nigerian Law, but may also be found in institutions of learning throughout the length of breadth of the country; and, two, the authors have written in simple easy to understand language, and we hope this will help. This book is highly recommended.Chijioke Chris Ohuruogu, educated at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife and the University of Lagos, also a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, is a Professor of Law ;had served as Dean of Law at Baze University Abuja and Benson Idahosa University of in Benin city. He was one-time Head of Department of International Law, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, among others.

But thank goodness. Rivers State has just been relieved of the most decadent administration in history, which frittered public resources, sold the State's valuable assets to cronies, increased the debt burden and crippled the State's economy.-Governor Nvesom Ezenwo WikeAs Justice Learned Hand rightly observed: "If we are to keep democracy, there must be a commandment: thou shall not ration justice." Today, the people of Rivers State are beneficiaries of justice in its proper measure. We salute the courage and determination of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the rule of law in our democracy.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeWe are celebrating political or flag independence. But the need to deliver economic freedom to our country remains the most significant challenge before all of us. Therefore, on this historic day, we should pledge to rededicate our lives to build a united, inclusive and prosperous nation where justice, peace and the rule of law shall reign supreme. We are resilient and highly creative. We can easily overcome our economic predicaments if we all work together with patriotism towards building trust and finding realistic solutions to the challenges buffeting the nation.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeAs Rivers people, we are proud of our contributions to the unity and progress of the Nigerian nation. We remain committed to preserving the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria. All that we ask in return is justice, mutual respect and adequate recompenses for our contributions and sacrifice to the economic and social progress of the country.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeIsaac Newton once said, "If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants." It is, therefore, essential to acknowledge that whatever heights I have attained and my contributions to my State, our nation and humanity, it is because people inspired me, believed in me, gave me opportunities and supported me along this journey in diverse ways.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo WikeWe cannot continue to live in sin or tolerate the devil's evil ways and expect God's grace to flourish and prosper our lands. Therefore, we pray that the Church reflect on the social malaise affecting our country, re-direct its efforts towards transforming our people's lives, minds and attitudes unto righteousness, and restore our society's moral and religious foundations for good.-Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike

This book provides a detailed and timely analysis of key regulatory and legal issues arising in the context of HIV and AIDS. The ten chapters cover the core issues central to an understanding of law and public health as concerns AIDS. Whilst the book focuses on how Nigerian law applies to HIV and AIDS, the author draws heavily on materials from other jurisdictions. There are many parallels that exist between the application of law and governance considerations in the AIDS pandemic that resonate with other infectious diseases including Covid-19, therefore the book is widely relevant to public health law in communicable disease contexts. Topics covered: overview and origin of the HIV and AIDS epidemic; legal and institutional framework of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Nigeria; human rights and the epidemic; decriminalisation of HIV and AIDS in Nigeria; HIV and AIDS and vulnerable groups; HIV and AIDS and patents; HIV and AIDS and sports; international organisations and programmes on HIV; judicial responses to HIV and AIDS; and global pandemics and control.
