Who Stole Quality?: a university campus taleQuality is a word that trips of the tongue: "please rate the quality of your experience"; "quality assurance is at the heart of our work"; "that was a quality performance". Sometimes the stakes are high: what would happen to a police force, a hospital, or a school if it was deemed to be of low quality? But what exactly is the nature of the quality which is being referred to? And what if the prevailing conception of quality began to be unravelled? The Quality Officer at a provincial university is found dead. What were the circumstances which surrounded his demise and what happened to the university in its wake? Two academics, who are lovers, find themselves at the centre of the drama; a drama which takes them on a journey beyond the university's walls, on a search to discover what is at the heart of quality. The author, Charlie Rondeau, worked in a UK university throughout the period in which this story is set.`This book cleverly marries the world of higher education intrigue, politics and wicked problems with those of the outside world and they come together beautifully. It made me smile, it made me reflect and it definitely gave me food for thought.' Jo Peat, University of Roehampton`This book is both a very good read and a deeply thoughtful critique of the use and misuse of "quality" as a concept in UK higher education'. Tony McCulloch, University College London`A satisfying, immersive, page turning mystery that also asks important questions about how we share and assess knowledge - at university but also more generally.' Professor Julie Hall, London Metropolitan University`Fascinating, this book is an engaging novel and exploration of issues in higher education combined. This sounds like it can't be achieved, yet here it is. I found myself agreeing with the protagonists' discussions throughout the story. There are passages of pure romantic charm interspersed with agonies of second guessing.' Peter Gossman, University of WorcesterAbout the authorCharlie Rondeau worked in a UK university throughout the period in which this story is set. Her first teaching job was in further education, where she taught both Sociology and Philosophy. Upon securing a university post, she began writing about the meaning and role of higher and further education in society, as well as supporting academics to enhance their knowledge and understanding of higher education pedagogy. She is now formally retired but continues to write and engage in the battle of ideas for the soul of higher education

This book is written to inspire those who feel confused, and unhappy and struggle to talk about their mental health issues. I have been that person; I have been confused about my career and personal life. It has been a challenge, but it is one that helped me to identify the help I needed to seek. Through doing a lot of harmful things to myself, none of which benefitted me but only made me feel more insecure about myself, I have now taught myself how to deal with my issues. This book is a guide to how I opened my mind to the world of possibilities, and I taught myself that it's okay to do things my way for a change.

Though retired from being actively involved with football 17 years ago, Frank remains an ardent fan. He was an Essex qualified Referee for 42 years. Retiring at the age of 72. Hardly missing a weekend. Reverently applying Football's laws he had sworn to uphold. No matter the age of players. He loved what he did. For 42 years he did it well. Now 89, like most fellow Octogenarians, he lives in the past. Explains Frank Now memories are daily happenings which football fans should enjoy. So why not let them". It All Kicks Off On Sunday is Frank's third book.Like the previous two, all money from book sales will be given to SeSaw. A Leavenheath, Suffolk based small animal rescue and rehoming charity.Full of fears, tears and cheers. Being sworn at, spat at, struck by thrown missiles and once floored, It All Kicks Off On Sunday puts the whistle in your hands. It accurately reports incidents that have decidedly and dramatically changed the face of soccer. A decision taken when, in 1961 the capped wages of twenty pounds weekly, was universally scrapped.Since when and mores the pity, soccer has become awash with money. He persuaded his son to qualify and become a referee at eighteen. Sadly he resigned before the season's end. Just one of the one hundred of that season's one hundred and fifty Essex referees who qualifed that year. Frank hopes his 14 year old Grand Daughter, Millie, a newly qualified this year's referee, is determined it won't.As the end of his refereeing activities drew to a close, Frank said given the opportunity, he'd do it all again. At age 89 a rare compliment indeed. Seriously, if you enjoy a challenge, there's none better" said the retired man in the middle.

What is love? How did you experience it? And what role does it play in your life? In this book, I freed myself from fear and allowed my senses to speak to me. I found peace in doing so and realised that "with truth, we can heal". Love, family, infancy and self-discovery are the themes explored in this book. I talk about my first love, my relationship with my dad, and how I came to discover that my mother and I shared the same dream "I guess those umbilical cords tied up not just our lives but our dreams too... " This is Life Through Poetry and I hope you find truth in it.

Has Boudicca's battle site finally been found? In AD 61 Queen Boudicca led an army of over 100,000 that revolted against Rome and ransacked Camulodunum (Colchester) Londinium (London) and Verulamium (St Albans) killing everyone in their path. Thousands of people were said to have been slaughtered before her vast army was stopped by General Suetonius Paulinus and his legions. Peter takes a look at the many battle site suggestions and argues that the battle could not possibly have occurred in the midlands as some scholars suggest and argues that the battle must have taken place near to Verulamium. (St Albans)Peter Sweeney argues that the battle almost certainly took place on the Dunstable Downs in Bedfordshire, at the crossroads where Watling Street meets with the Icknield Way and just 12 miles from St Albans. In his concise book Peter opens up an interesting debate as to whether this is the actual battle field or not and invites an organised archaeological dig to be carried out to ascertain if it is indeed the place of the battle.

'The World According To Rube,' is book of adult fiction stories on a variety of subjects. Fantasy, crime, science fiction, drama, realism, satire, humour, and controversy. 'Live And Die In New York.' The city was a jungle, bought and paid for in blood, and riddled with corruption and crime, but it needed people like him to take out the garbage and lock up the trash. So, he turned up his collar and looked up at the sky as he strolled away. "Maybe it might rain?"Where I get my ideas, you would have to dwell into my crazy mind. My stuff can be zany and off the wall, but much of it is true. People are really like that. Many of the characters in my stories are just like you and me.I've been called wacky for my unconventional mind, but what makes life interesting is our individual thoughts and ideas. I'm like an adult version of Hans Christian Andersen, and Walter Mitty. And some of the humour may be as outrageous as Richard Pryor, and Chris Rock. So, be warned. It's not for the faint hearted. Anyway, enjoy.

  • von Brian Byrne Simmons

A few of my experiences and exploits are not recounted. This is not through lack of interest but because some part of the incident has eluded me. For example, four of us sailed a whaler into St Brides Bay one very hot summer's day. What wind there had been died and we were becalmed. To our horror, we found there were only three oars in the whaler. Trying to row something as big as a whaler with three oars is like trying to dig a 10-acre field with three gardens spades. It took us 12 hours to return to camp whereupon we were all put on charges for being absent without leave, misappropriating a Royal Naval vessel and being sunburned. In the case of the latter, the Navy's argument is that unburn is a self-inflicted wound and is therefore an offence. We were all badly sunburned. When the first lieutenant saw us, he laughed - quite hurtfully, I considered - and dismissed the charges. The reason why the story isn't included is because, for the life of me, I can't remember where we obtained the whaler nor where we set off from or returned to. Apart from that, the voyage actually took place and should be recorded as the only time I ever went to sea. In other words, I have the distinction of being a sailor who never went to sea in a ship.

  • von Michael Synnott
    27,00 €

Hilarious, witty but most of all heart-warming, it's not hard to see why this book could have been a number one Sunday Times bestseller. Michael Synnott has ridden the rails, got off track and lost his train of thought. Proud parent to Nick and Aithne. Born in Dublin in 1951, a survivor of the robust education dealt out by the Irish Christian Brothers. An emigrant to the UK and to Australia and back. A career that included castration of piglets, a shiny-arsed clerk in the civil service, providing a shelter for tramps and a university teacher. This short biography is living proof that nobody is perfect!..... a big thanks to Sue Hare for proof reading and encouragement.
