In the book, first published in 1908, Bennett addressed the large and growing number of white-collar workers that had accumulated since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. In his view, these workers put in eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, at jobs they did not enjoy, and at worst hated. They worked to make a living, but their daily existence consisted of waking up, getting ready for work, working as little as possible during the workday, going home, unwinding, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. In short, he didn't believe they were really living.Bennett addressed this problem by urging these employees to seize their extra time and make the most of it to improve themselves. Extra time could be found at the beginning of the day, by waking up early, and on the ride to work, on the way home from work, in the evening hours, and especially during the weekends. During this time, he prescribed improvement measures such as reading great literature, taking an interest in the arts, reflecting on life, and learning self-discipline. Bennett wrote that time is the most precious of commodities. He said that many books have been written on how to live on a certain amount of money each day. And he added that the old adage "time is money" understates the matter, as time can often produce money, but money cannot produce more time. Time is extremely limited, and Bennett urged others to make the best of the time remaining in their lives.This book has seen increased appeal in recent years due to the explosion of the self-improvement phenomenon, and the book has much relevance in today's world.

This edition is a one volume republication of the Richard Mott Gummere translation of Letters from a Stoic: Epistulae Morales AD Lucilium, originally published in three volumes by William Heinemann, London, 1917-25 and G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, in 1918 and reprinted in 1925. Included is the English language text only and not the Latin text. For several years of his turbulent life, Seneca was the guiding hand of the Roman Empire. His inspired reasoning derived mainly from the Stoic principles, which had originally been developed some centuries earlier in Athens. This edition of Seneca's letters shows him upholding the austere ethical ideals of Stoicism-the wisdom of the self-possessed person immune to overmastering emotions and life's setbacks-while valuing friendship and the courage of ordinary men and criticizing the harsh treatment of slaves and the cruelties in the gladiatorial arena. A publisher who wrote books that he published himself, he lectured and was a proponent of the Christ myth theory. Highly influenced by the work of Gerald Massey and Godfrey Higgins, Kuhn contended that the Bible derived its origins from other Pagan religions and much of Christian history was pre-extant as Egyptian mythology. He also proposed that the Bible was symbolic and did not depict real events and argued that the leaders of the church started to misinterpret the bible at the end of the third century.

Edgar Allan Poe's The Gold-Bug is as iconic to cryptography in literature as David Kahn's Codebreakers is to historical publications on the subject.
