  • von Arnold Bennett
    14,00 €

2019 Reprint of 1910 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. In the book, first published in 1908, Bennett addressed the large and growing number of white-collar workers that had accumulated since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. In his view, these workers put in eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, at jobs they did not enjoy, and at worst hated. They worked to make a living, but their daily existence consisted of waking up, getting ready for work, working as little as possible during the workday, going home, unwinding, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. In short, he didn't believe they were really living.Bennett addressed this problem by urging these employees to seize their extra time and make the most of it to improve themselves. Extra time could be found at the beginning of the day, by waking up early, and on the ride to work, on the way home from work, in the evening hours, and especially during the weekends. During this time, he prescribed improvement measures such as reading great literature, taking an interest in the arts, reflecting on life, and learning self-discipline. Bennett wrote that time is the most precious of commodities. He said that many books have been written on how to live on a certain amount of money each day. And he added that the old adage "time is money" understates the matter, as time can often produce money, but money cannot produce more time. Time is extremely limited, and Bennett urged others to make the best of the time remaining in their lives. This book has seen increased appeal in recent years due to the explosion of the self-improvement phenomenon, and the book has much relevance in today's world.

  • von Willis George Emerson

  • von Lucius Annaeus Seneca
    26,00 €

2018 Reprint of 1925 Edition. This edition is a one volume republication of the Richard Mott Gummere translation of Letters from a Stoic: Epistulae Morales AD Lucilium, originally published in three volumes by William Heinemann, London, 1917-25 and G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, in 1918 and reprinted in 1925. Included is the English language text only and not the Latin text. For several years of his turbulent life, Seneca was the guiding hand of the Roman Empire. His inspired reasoning derived mainly from the Stoic principles, which had originally been developed some centuries earlier in Athens. This edition of Seneca's letters shows him upholding the austere ethical ideals of Stoicism-the wisdom of the self-possessed person immune to overmastering emotions and life's setbacks-while valuing friendship and the courage of ordinary men and criticizing the harsh treatment of slaves and the cruelties in the gladiatorial arena. The humanity and wit revealed in Seneca's interpretation of Stoicism is a moving and inspiring declaration of the dignity of the individual mind.

  • von Alvin Boyd Kuhn
    16,00 €

2018 Reprint of 1936 Pamphlet Edition. 36 Pages. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Alvin Boyd Kuhn (1880 -1963) was an American Theosophist. A publisher who wrote books that he published himself, he lectured and was a proponent of the Christ myth theory. Highly influenced by the work of Gerald Massey and Godfrey Higgins, Kuhn contended that the Bible derived its origins from other Pagan religions and much of Christian history was pre-extant as Egyptian mythology. He also proposed that the Bible was symbolic and did not depict real events and argued that the leaders of the church started to misinterpret the bible at the end of the third century.

  • von Sun Tzu

  • von Edgar Allan Poe
    14,00 €

2018 Reprint of 1909 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Also Includes Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue and the Raven. Edgar Allan Poe's The Gold-Bug is as iconic to cryptography in literature as David Kahn's Codebreakers is to historical publications on the subject. It became one of Poe's most read and best-known stories. Many readers have taken their first steps in cryptology after reading Poe's story - some even became important codebreakers - and more than a few writers were inspired by Poe to write their own story with secret writing and encrypted messages in it. The Gold-Bug is not only an exciting story about the discovery of an old treasure, but also a great introduction to cryptography and codebreaking. It tickles the reader's curiosity and Poe provides a detailed description of how to decipher the cryptogram. While doing so, he also provides the solution. However, deciphering the message yourself can be more entertaining than reading how Legrand did it in the story.

  • von Epictetus
    13,00 €

2018 Reprint of 1948 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Although he was born into slavery and endured a permanent physical disability, Epictetus (ca. 50-ca. 130 AD) maintained that all people are free to control their lives and to live in harmony with nature. We will always be happy, he argued, if we learn to desire that things should be exactly as they are. After attaining his freedom, Epictetus spent his entire career teaching philosophy and advising a daily regimen of self-examination. His pupil Arrianus later collected and published the master's lecture notes; the Enchiridion, or Manual. It is a distillation of Epictetus' teachings and an instructional manual for a tranquil life. Full of practical advice, this work offers guidelines for those seeking contentment as well as for those who have already made some progress in that direction.

  • von V. I. Lenin
    14,00 €

2018 Reprint of 1920 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. With this now-classic work, Lenin aimed to encapsulate the lessons the Bolshevik Party had learned from its involvement in three revolutions in 12 years-in a manner that European Communists could relate to, for it was to them he was speaking. He also further develops the theory of what the "dictatorship of the proletariat" means and stresses that the primary danger for the working-class movement in general is opportunism on the one hand, and anti-Marxist ultraleftism on the other.

  • von Wallace D. Wattles
    14,00 €

2018 Reprint of 1910 Edition. With this seminal book, Wallace Wattles popularized the Law of Attraction, the powerful concept that inspired The Secret. The Science of Getting Rich explains how to attract wealth, overcome emotional barriers, and apply foolproof methods to bring financial success into your life. The Science of Getting Rich was credited by Rhonda Byrne as one of the inspirations for her popular 2006 film and 2007 book The Secret. As Byrne explained it on the web site of Oprah Winfrey, "Something inside of me had me turn the pages one by one, and I can still remember my tears hitting the pages as I was reading it. [...] It gave me a glimpse of The Secret. It was like a flame inside of my heart. And with every day since, it's just become a raging fire of wanting to share all of this with the world."

  • von William Morris
    20,00 €

2018 Reprint of 1901 Edition. News from Nowhere (1890) is the most famous work of one of the greatest British writers and thinkers, William Morris. It is a utopian picture of a future communist society, drawing on the work of Ruskin and Marx and written in response to what Morris saw as soulless and mechanical visions of socialism. In this work of his last years, Morris distilled many of his leading ideas on politics, art and society, imagining a world in which capitalism has been abolished by a workers' revolution and nature and society have become beautiful habitations for humanity. In an era that has seen the collapse of state socialism, Morris's damning critique of this conception, and his positing of a powerful alternative, are compelling reasons for paying attention to this classic of British socialism. One of the most literary and readable of utopian novels, News from Nowhere chronicles the impressions of a nineteenth-century visitor to the twenty-second century, who finds England transformed into a socialist paradise. Morris' idyllic society echoes themes from the writings of Ruskin and Marx but forms a distinctive expression of the author's own egalitarian views. A distillation of Morris' mature reflections on politics, art and society, this work was regarded as an exercise in sentimentality upon its 1890 publication. Modern readers, however, are likely to find resonance in its critique of state socialism and its proposals for an alternative society.
