It needs very little argument to convince the average thinking person of the great importance of memory, although even then very few begin to realize just how important is the function of the mind that has to do with the retention of mental impressions. The first thought of the average person when he is asked to consider the importance of memory, is its use in the affairs of every-day life, along developed and cultivated lines, as contrasted with the lesser degrees of its development. In short, one generally thinks of memory in its phase of "a good memory" as contrasted with the opposite phase of "a poor memory." But there is a much broader and fuller meaning of the term than that of even this important phase.

The language of which a Grammar is now offered to the Public is commonly, but improperly, termed by Europeans the Gentoo. It is the Andhra of Sanscrit author, and, in the country where it is spoken, is known by the name of the Trilinga, Telinga, Teloogoo, or Tenoogoo. This language is the vernacular dialect of the Hindoos, inhabiting that part of the Indian Peninsular, which, extending from the Dutch settlement of Pulicat on the Coast of Coromandel, inland to the vicinity of Bangalore, stretches northwards, along the coast as far as Chicacole, and in the interior to the sources of the Tapti; bounded on the east by the Bay of Bengal, and on the west by an irregular line, passing through the western districts belonging to the Soubahdar of the Deccan, and cutting off the most eastern provinces of the new state of Mysore :- a tract including the five Northern Circars of Ganjam, Vizagapatam, Rajahmundry, Masulipatam, and Guntoor; the greater portion of the Nizam's extensive territories; the districts of Cuddapah and Bellari ceded by him to the British; the eastern provinces of Mysore; and the northern portion of the Carnatick: nor is this language unknown in the more Southern parts of India, for the descendants of those Teloogoo families which were deputed by the kings of Vidianagara to controul their southern conquests, or which occasionally emigrated from Telingana to avoid famine or oppression, are scatered all over the Dravida and Carnataca provinces; and ever retaining the language of their forefathers, have diffused a knowledge of it throughout the Peninsula.

Daisy Miller, by Henry James, published in 1878. Winterbourne and Daisy Miller, a beautiful American girl, fall in love with each other. His pursuit of her is hindered by her flirtatiousness, which is frowned upon by the other expatriates when they meet in Switzerland and Italy. James' "Daisy Miller" was a big success when it was published in 1878 and continues to be popular. Although some people criticized the story for being an "outrage on American Girlhood," Daisy Miller is one of James' most popular works, as well as The Turn of the Screw.

The chief features of his work were its sections on the political and revenue of the district; and these have been freely utilized in the present volume. The early part of the former of them, however, has naturally been largely superseded by the discoveries due to the progress of epigraphy in recent years; and limites of space have necessitated the ruthless condensation of much of Mr. Nelson's picturesque account of the Nayakkan dynasty in the latter part of the same section. Most of the rest of the book is new. It is arranged on the system followed in the other District Gazetteers of the new series now being brought out, and statistical matter appears in a separate Appendix which is to be revised decennially, after each census.Under instruction, the volume does not deal with the Ramnad and Sivaganaga Zamindaris, which are to be transferred to another district, and treats the area which will be included in the proposed new Nilakkottai taluk as though this taluk were already in existence. The absence of statistics for this latter tract has, however, in some cases prevented the consistent carrying out of this method of referring to it.
