The aphorism usually attributed to the French statesman Count Mirabeau, that Prussia was "not a country with an army but an army with a country", remains two centuries later a common way of introducing a discussion of 18th and 19th century Prussia. This is a compilation edition of three wonderful 19th century series of colourful military costume plates, detailing the pre-unification Prussian Army, in accurately hand-coloured images, complete with lively commentary from expert Ray Westlake on each individual plate.Over 400 military figures are shown in their 'natural surroundings': camping, in battle, on horseback, on the march, etc. This edition forms part of our developing range of books dedicated to uniformology. Drawing on seminal works from the 18th and 19th century, they are masterpieces of military art, and important historical reference works.Die Soldaten Friedrich's des GrossenMilitary from the time of Frederick the GreatPreussische Heer, Das, unter Friedrich Wilhelm IVThe Prussian Army, under Friedrich Wilhelm IVDie Königl. An excellent visual presentation of the Prussian Army and their uniforms under the Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Facsimiles of a fine series of 36 numbered contemporary hand-coloured lithographs. This is a colourful series of military costume plates with over 200 military figures in their 'natural surroundings': camping, in battle, on horseback, on the march, etc. Starting with the Garde du Corps in their Gala uniforms, there are plates of the Garde Cuirassier, Garde Husaren, Garde Ulanen-Regiment, Garde Dragoner, Garde Regiment zu Fuss, Garde Jäger, Blücher'sches Husaren-Regiment, Gendarmes, etc. Plate 8 shows the uniforms of the Kaiser Franz and Kaiser Alexander Grenadier-Regiment. It contains uniforms with the alterations which were introduced under Friedrich Wilhelm IV, especially the well-known so-called 'Pickelhaube'. The Pickelhaube was originally designed in 1842 by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, perhaps as a copy of similar helmets that were adopted at the same time by the Russian military.

Facsimiles of thirty one excellent and accurately coloured plates of the uniforms of different Prussian regiments under Frederick the Great by wood engraver Eduard Kretzschmar (1807-1858) and illustrator Adolf von Menzel (1815-1905).Upon ascending to the Prussian throne in 1740, Frederick the Great attacked and annexed the rich Austrian province of Silesia in 1742, winning military acclaim for himself and Prussia. He became an influential military theorist whose analyses emerged from his extensive personal battlefield experience and covered issues of strategy, tactics, mobility and logistics. His most significant accomplishments include his military successes in the Silesian wars, his reorganisation of the Prussian Army, the First Partition of Poland, and his patronage of the arts and the Enlightenment. Frederick was the last Hohenzollern monarch titled King in Prussia, declaring himself King of Prussia after annexing Polish Prussia from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1772. Prussia greatly increased its territories and became a major military power in Europe under his rule. He became known as Frederick the Great and was nicknamed 'Old Fritz'.

During the Second World War, the 4th Indian Division was in the vanguard of nine campaigns in the Mediterranean theatre, Egypt, Eritrea, Syria, Tunisia, Italy and Greece. The 4th Division captured 150,000 prisoners and suffered 25,000 casualties, more than the strength of a whole division. It won over 1,000 honours and awards, which included four Victoria Crosses and three George Crosses. Field Marshal Lord Wavell wrote: "The fame of this Division will surely go down as one of the greatest fighting formations in military history."

Biferno, Trigno, Sangro, Moro, Rapido, Arno, Senio, Santerno, Po, AdigeThe 8th Indian Division started its overseas service in the Middle East in the garrisoning of Iraq and then the invasion of Persia to secure the oil fields of the area for the Allies, before moving to Italy in 1943. Landing at Taranto, it pushed up the length of the peninsula in a series of major battles: breaking the Sangro Line, forcing the Rapido and turning the defences at Cassino, breaking the stubborn German resistance at Monte Grande and, finally, forcing the Po River. It won four VCs, 26 DSOs and 149 MCs along the way. During the war the 8th Indian Division sustained casualties totalling 2,012 dead, 8,189 wounded and 749 missing.

The role of this division is also duplicated by a much larger work: the book by Brig. M. R. Roberts. However, this booklet gives a good account of Kohima and Imphal and the crossing of the Irrawaddy. In 1945, the division was flown into Siam, so becoming the first Allied formation to re-enter South East Asia.

One of the few Indian divisions in the 14th Army trained specifically for the war in Burma. Raised in Bangalore in 1942, it commenced active operations in late 1943 and served from Imphal through to the end. It established the 14th Army's first brigade-head across the Chindwin and its second such brigade-head across the Irrawaddy. Its final task was to round up the Japanese in French Indochina.

Arakan, RagoonThis is a history of the division said later by the Japanese to have been the opponent which they most feared. The 26th held the Allied monsoon line in the Arakan during two such seasons, repulsing every attack launched against it. Later it made a series of leap-frog landings down the coast to clinch the issue in the Arakan. It was the first division to enter Ragoon, invading the city from the sea.

Burma, Malaya, JavaThe Fighting Cock Division is well recorded in the book by Doulton. This book gives coverage of the heavy fighting at the Kohima Battle, the capture of Tamu, the reoccupation of Malaya in August 1945, and then its strange role on the island of Java - concurrently disarming the Japanese garrison, fighting the insurgent Indonesian nationalists, and caring for 65,000 former internees pending the arrival of a new Dutch administration.

"Your papers, please"Identity documents were found everywhere in German-occupied Europe The original purpose of this official 1944 SHAEF book was to make counterintelligence officers familiar with the different categories of identity and other documents carried by the citizens of Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg. They include: Military Status; Travel Documents, including documents allowing entrance into or residence in Prohibited Coastal Areas; Ration Cards; Curfew Passes; Vehicle Permits etc. Some of the documents shown are not strictly identity documents, but were included because they were necessary for specified civilian activities. These historical documents are now extremely collectable. This original core reference gives reliable information to the purpose of issue, with actual-size colour illustrations of the artefact (front, back and internal), along with a physical description and issuance regulations.
