When Hospital Trustees contact Joan Shepperd who is a psychic investigator, to discover the reason for the hauntings at a Mental Institution at Ilkley. Joan, and her daughter Anne, never expected to find a disused operating theatre, and the old museum with automated, working dummies in the basement. They were also puzzled when finding specimens preserved in formaldehyde, along with diaries and ledgers locked in the attic. They also asked themselves, why are the staff so unnerved when in the presence of the Matron, Patrice Elliot. Who is the ghostly disfigured nurse who calmsthe patients at night when they are restless. And why is there such a high suicide rate amongst the nurses and patients. The eerie apparitions of service men and women, along with medical staff and other entities bring tension and fear to everyone working there. Is the cause of the hauntings to be found in a disused well that Joan, and Anne, discovered in a sealed room alongside the grisly museum apparatus. Read this book and find out.

How did the public education system which now educates 93% of children in the UK begin? How did it evolve so that admission to 25% of state primary and 6% of state secondary schools is still controlled by the Church of England? 'so excellent a Work' explores the first 135 years of this important and fascinating national story. It began with a movement at the beginning of the 18th century which encouraged every parish in England and Wales to set up a charity school for the poor, a project which Queen Anne described as 'so excellent a Work'. Inspired by this initiative, in 1710 six enterprising and philanthropic men established a school to serve their own ancient community, the Royal Liberty of Havering. Against the odds, their foundation has continued to this day. Set against the changing historical panorama, this is the story of that charity school, the community it served, and the local people whose commitment ensured its survival. It is the story of the national politicians and personalities who fought for - or opposed - the establishment of a national system of public education for 'the lower orders'. Their motives, their attitudes and their rivalries may surprise you!

The author is in his 90th decade. Throughout his long life dealing with many different types of people he wondered how it was that some people having the worst of starts in life, with poverty and abuse as their companions achieved their own success whilst others who were born with the proverbial silver spoon in their mouths failed completely in their goals. The research into the causes took nearly 30 years. This book is the result.

Motor Neurone Disease is a vile affliction that gradually robs the sufferer of all their independence and dignity, locking both invalid and carer into a death spiral. This book charts one couple's journey and its brutal physical and emotional impact. Despite being an always fatal condition, MND enjoysonly Cinderella status in respect of both research funding and charitable giving. As such all the royalties from this book will be donated to MND Association. It charts also the truism that fighting a terminal illness is only a part of your battle when you run up against those great organs of the British state; the local authority and the NHS. As it turned out my wife died before we got into any battles about funding, but there was no avoidingconflict with the NHS, with Covid and the response to it as an inescapable backcloth. The book charts the emotionally exhausting battle with bureaucrats, when our freedoms were surrendered to an unfeeling officialdom that at times seemed drunk on its power. I am reminded of the words of Benjamin Franklin; 'Those who choose safety over liberty deserve neither.' This book is a microcosm of how we were governed during the pandemic.

Playing with My Christianity is the second volume of Basil du Toit's Collected Sonnets, and brings to a close his archival selection from the over 600 sonnets he wrote between 2011 (when he retired) and 2021. Du Toit likens these poems to short excursions through material substances, brief suffusions in the weft and weight of the world - they are thus conceived of as sensory experiences before they are thought of as intellectual meanings. Written on the third floor of Edinburgh University's Main Library (where most of the university's rich archive of world literatures is held) these high-spirited poems are as much an expression of Du Toit's relief at having been released from the miseries of paid employment, as exuberant journeys of discovery in their own right. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Basil du Toit was born in Cape Town in 1951, but spent much of his childhood in Botswana, at that time the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland. He recalls trading the secrets of a magic trick with a Tswana man who in exchange taught him how to say a few words in the rapidly vanishing / Xam language of the Kalahari Bushmen. This proximity of fragile language to the magical fashioning of reality continues to inform his writing.
