My Father’s War is a story based on a diary my father wrote while serving as a young man in the United States Marine Corps during the Second Nicaraguan Campaign in 1928-29. Many Americans are unfamiliar with the Nicaraguan Campaign, but without it the outcome of World War II may have changed. It was in Nicaragua that the ground troops in the American military learned how to engage in jungle warfare. It was also during this encounter that airplanes were used in warfare for the first time. This learning played a major role in how the American military fought on Guadalcanal and other South Pacific Islands during the Second World War.Nicaragua was a wild and untamed country in 1928. It was a country of extremes in climate, in terrain, and in the people groups who called Nicaragua home. It was a land of diseases, wild animals, swarming mosquitoes, poisonous snakes, stinging bugs, raging rivers, steaming jungles, and rugged mountains.My father was a soldier in this land. Like many young men he fought for a cause he didn’t completely understand. He was there because he was a soldier. He did his job even when the American leadership refused to acknowledge the fact that the military was engaged in a war. There is an old saying, "Curiosity kill the cat, satisfaction brought him back." My curiosity was killing me after I read an article by Earl Ofari Hutchinson. (2013) "Why So Many People Believe Blacks Are America's Racists". That conclusion was based on a Rasmussen (2013) telephone poll of 1000 respondents and noted "a significant percent of blacks . . . said they consider more blacks racist than whites or Hispanics". Of course, a multitude of questions about the survey crossed my mind. The topic peaked my curiosity and I decided to explore whether, based on my journey after arriving in America, I could qualify as a Racist. During that journey, I had to research the definitions of "racist", "racism", "bigot", and the behaviors, social and hereditary norms, laws, etc., that could contribute to anyone in America, with such a diverse population, to be a racist. In my pursuit of that knowledge, I learned about the personal beliefs, social rules, laws, regulations, and more importantly the insidious nature of and how it affects the everyday lives of the American landscape.My research lead to my journey of "Learning About and Living With Racism in America".

All of us have watched successful sports teams and many of us have worked as a part of a successful business team. My observations convince me that the leaders within these successful teams consistently leverage simple but critical core values. Core values that inspire individuals and build highly successful teams. Over time, I realized that I learned most of these simple, successful values while I was a cadet at Texas A&M University. Without fully comprehending why I held strong convictions about leading using these values, I built a successful career in corporate America that led me to several key executive roles. Late in my career, I began to piece together the origins of these values. Most successful leaders build and leverage these values as they progress in their career. Often times these lessons come with setbacks. My buddies in the Corps were exposed to all of the lessons in four short years. I would like to share these experiences with you and the lessons we learned so you can compress your learning curve and build your leadership value library without exposing yourself to some of the consequences that come with new knowledge.
