This story is about a young father from the Ozarks who wants to do something different for Christmas with his two children, their cousin, and an aunt, besides simply opening presents and playing on their cell phones. After a brief discussion, they decide that the young man will tell a story to the group which contains fantasy, action, excitement, a little romance, and a happy ending with some Ozarks flavor thrown in to spice it up! AN OZARKS CHRISTMAS STORY is his result. This reinvention of the Christmas Story is well crafted, thoughtful, profound, and entertaining. It flows with grace, warmth, and excitement as it rises above the stereotypical story, offering new insights into the holiday season!Don Provance wrote this story in honor and remembrance of a good friend who passed away. He also wrote it from an Ozarks' perspective with a bit of Ozarks' folklore thrown in to dress it up. Some of the characters are based on two of his grandchildren. Two types of people will really be able to enjoy this tale: those who know the original Christmas Story but are willing to view the story in more modern times from an Ozarks' perspective, and those who enjoy a fantasy tale, particularly from an Ozarkian setting. Don is a lifelong Ozarkian and has written other novels, all with the Ozarks as the setting. He is well versed in the traditions of this region and successfully incorporates much of it into his tale. He presents his Christmas Story in a unique way set in the Ozarks.

  • - Poems to Comfort and Encourage the Heart
    von Kathy Stevens Bradley
    24,00 €

Kathy Stevens Bradley has enjoyed writing acrostic poetry for almost 20 years. This type of expressive writing was especially helpful when she had an unexpected stroke at age 60. Before her retirement from classroom teaching in 2013, she spent a wonderful 31 years as an elementary school arts teacher and writer. As a drama and music teacher, she taught kindergarten-5th grade. During these years, she had the opportunity to write and produce numerous plays and video productions for public schools in Columbia, SC. She is the author of 18 original plays for children, and wrote and co-produced the 6-part social studies series DETECTIVE BONZ & THE SC HISTORY MYSTERY (presently viewed on SCETV's educational website knowitall.org). Some of her favorite pastimes are playing guitar, writing country songs, and spending time with her grandchildren and family. She is hoping her two grands will be her cohorts in singing and making up new tunes...and they seem to be willing, with spontaneous rhymes and songs springing forth at a regular pace. She is presently employed as a writer with SCETV.

  • - Living, Dying and Loving
    von Patrick H Dust
    22,00 €

This volume is an examination of human wisdom in a variety of contexts dealing with memory, free will the human heart, mortality, the self in love, and contemporary American politics. It contains reflections that arise at the intersection of five domains of knowledge: literature, philosophy, psychology, recent neuroscience, and pop culture (music and film). More than six decades of reading, thinking, and living culminate here in a belief that change and learning are the beating heart of human existence and an agnosticism with an upside. The ability to doubt received knowledge, while critical, is only one component of wisdom. The truly wise person has also learned to be cautiously skeptical about skepticism itself. In this way the person not only avoids premature closure on possibilities that might become real but may become more tolerant of other, competing views, as long as these are not dogmatic or hurtful. When circumstances require it, humans can live in a cognitive gap and still be wise.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the most common method of suicide was taking poison-usually arsenic. On the farm, strychnine, cyanide, and arsenic were used to get rid of gophers, rabbits, and other vermin. Mental illness, especially depression, was regarded as the most important factor for suicide. In the 19th century about half the coroners' verdicts on suicide concluded that the victims were "insane." Suicidal attempts were often triggered by life crises-the death of a close relative or, more often, a breakdown in a romantic relationship. When there were few available painkillers, escape from physical illness was a common reason for suicide. Arsenic was often used for murder, as it was readily available, cheap, and pretty much tasteless when dissolved. Death by Poison is a riveting collection of true stories about people who had a hard time coping with life-either ending it by suicide or by murdering a person who made their life miserable. These stories take place throughout Minnesota from 1859 to 1913, involving people from all walks of life, documenting their struggles, their hardships, and the sad ways they ended their lives.

In 1910, Jan Brozek is a lone traveler making his way across Europe with a singular purpose: immigrate to America and establish himself there as quickly as possible so he can afford sending for his fiancée, Maria. But as is the case with many best-laid plans, Jan's soon go terribly off-course. It begins with him saving the life of a stranger-the daughter of a powerful nobleman-and the attraction for her that he must grapple with, and which only grows more intense. • von Platt Bert Platt
    25,00 €

Laura had touched many lives as she was living her dream, but she had lived it alone, and voices were now reminding her that even bigger dreams might lie just beyond the horizon. Robert's own dreams had been shattered, and he found himself lost and alone in the darkness, a darkness which he did not understand and from which he could not escape. From their very different lives and from inspirations as unique as the worlds from which they had come, their searches for purpose and light lead them to the Rhine. On an iconic journey through the heart of Europe, they pass castles and cathedrals, and deep valleys and hillsides covered in vineyards: truly a fairy tale setting. But their journey is no fairy tale. Each tributary along the way and bend in the river brings magnificent vistas and even greater opportunities, but also brings conflict and choices. Which fork to take? Stay in the smooth water or risk the rapids? Beneath the quiet surface of the water lay real life, and Laura and Robert find more on their voyage than they could ever have imagined...or dreamed for. Their voyage of discovery reveals the truth that always lies beneath: Whether our journeys are marked by smooth sailing on calm waters or we have found ourselves blown far from our intended course, we never take those journeys alone.

  • - My Poetry, His Business
    von Fobbs Rubye L. Fobbs
    18,00 €

First of all, three of my reflective poems as you notice when you read them do not have times and dates recorded in the header. I went back and read them and I blessedly remembered why each of them didn't have these personal requirements of my own style. Poems 4,7,10 are the standouts. They were just created to be looked at now and then and to be written in personal greeting cards (eg. Poem 7, greeting card) The first poem, His Business, His Word entails what I have learned about myself through learning who Jesus is and that What His Business is about; the righteousness of his Word and the obedience thereof. Assuredly; He is God in the flesh, and the Holy Ghost in the spirit. His Business brings about His Word called, the Bible, which in my small way I help through my poetry.
