Yael takes advantage of President Roosevelt''s "New Deal" and the Works Projects Administration''s Art Program, designed to provide economic relief to artists and return a sense of pride to all who have suffered from the hardships of the Great Depression. Artists of every medium are assigned to decorate public buildings, schools, post offices with murals, paintings, and sculptures throughout the countryside. Yael''s project is to paint a mural on the wall of the courthouse in West Yazoo County, Mississippi, a place that is as alien to her way of life as the country of Lithuania, from which her parents fled. Their story is chronicled by Yael and witnessed by a centuries-old entity that harbors Secrets of the Black Tupelo.
The author, A. (Aletha) Roberta Hutchison Ostar''s (aka Hutchie in high school, Bobbie in college and as an adult) educational career began with two notable events in grade school-in first grade she refused to hold her pencil correctly for the Parker Penmanship writing model; she got a D in spelling in third grade. Both events were unacceptable in her family. So she proceeded to graduate from Camp Hill High School as valedictorian in 1945 and was Editor-in-chief of the HIGH LIGHT, the school paper her senior year. At Penn State she continued her journalism career by choosing it as her major and being named Editor of LA VIE, the yearbook, and News Editor of the DAILY COLLEGIAN, the student newspaper in her senior year, 1948. After working one year as a news reporter for the MCKEESPORT DAILY NEWS In Pennsylvania, and one year each as a book designer at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Press and the Thomas Y. Crowell Publishers in New York City, she followed the tradition of her times by retiring to have her children and becoming an active community volunteer: neighborhood newsletter, Girl Scouts, leader and adult educator, church volunteer, etc. In 1979, with two children in college and one in 11th grade, as a volunteer, she created and managed the annual programs for spouses of the presidents of state universities and colleges for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (aascu) of which her husband Allan had been president since 1965. This was at the height of the feminist movement when the role of spouses as fund raisers and representatives of their schools-unpaid, of course-was a very controversial topic. She conducted three surveys of these spouses for aascu and then, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation and the Lilley Foundation, she published a survey of the representational roles of a group of college and university presidents and spouses from all universities in the US-public and private-titled PUBLIC ROLES, PRIVATE LIVES. Now, at the age of 92 she has finally written down the stories and some of the lore of her fiercely loyal Iowa Mother, as her children had been begging her to do!

I want everyone to be able to see and to appreciate nature and wildlife; therefore, I write photographic books. Most books describe animals and birds. I want you to see what I see while I travel so that you can understand as much as possible how creatures live, what they eat, how they move, and what they do where they are visible. I tired of studying books talking about ecology and wildlife; I want you to see what each creature looks like and how they act.I chose Spanish-speaking countries for two reasons. First, I speak the language and have photographed everything I could for many years for my students to see as they learned the language. To communicate successfully with people of other countries, you need to understand their customs and culture as well as their language. Second, people are familiar with huge African and Asian animals. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to the wealth of Latin American wildlife; I am trying to do my bit to help remedy the lack. I was born and spent my early years in the West River country of South Dakota. This story is built from the many hours I spent talking with my Mother and Father about two decades of their lives trailing sheep. In talking with both of them and actually revisiting virtually all the areas where they set up their base camps, I developed a sense of some of their plight-even fear at times-but mostly love for a life most people would likely not choose-if they had choices. This is a story about survival. It is not about beating the elements of life on the plains of eastern Montana and western South Dakota but learning to live with them. In the final analysis, my Mom and Dad truly loved their nearly 25 years of herding sheep. They loved their kids, their dogs, their horses, and probably even their woolies. When we talked so often of those days, their eyes showed that love. I have taught speech communication and public relations for different universities all over the world in my 56 years as a teacher and professor-and enjoyed it all from 3rd grade classes to graduate school. I have written several other books but never one anything like this-this book brought tears to my eyes and newfound love to my heart.
