Why pick up yet another book on spiritual and personal growth? This question was the one I asked myself when considering the publication of this book. Originally, I wrote this book to fulfill my Chaplain residency at the Duke University Medical Center in 1998. In my present position as Supervisory Chaplain at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center, a friend of mine encouraged me to pursue publication. So, I share with you what is near and dear to my heart and hope and pray the pages within will assist you on your way to wholeness.

Jackboy was born into slavery on a Barbados sugar plantation. His constant attempts to escape finally pushed the masters too far. They punished the whole family by splitting them up and selling them off. His father's last words had been, "It's okay, son, don't ever give up." Several years later, wracked by guilt, but still obsessed with freedom, he slips away from a South Carolina tobacco plantation and outsmarts the Confederacy's most vicious slave patrol captain who is hot on his trail. He swims across the Savannah River and taunts his pursuers by hurling obscenities at them from the opposite bank. After days of searching for the safety of Sherman's Army in Georgia, he stumbles across a Confederate soldier behind enemy lines and gets into a life or death fight. A maverick Union lieutenant named Jack Johnson happens upon him just as he is about to bash in the skull of this rebel sniper the officer has been chasing for days. After taking control of the situation and assuring Jackboy that he is safe, Johnson interrogates the young man and discovers he is remarkably intelligent and resourceful. He takes Jackboy under his wing, enlists him into the army, and teaches him to read, write, and use a gun. On a mission to plunder Confederate assets, they encounter a small band of terrified black men on the run who report that the same depraved slave patrol captain who once chased after Jackboy is now selling hunting trips to southern elites on his nearby estate using captured runaways as prey animals. The next one is scheduled for the following day. They also share a piece of information so shocking that Jackboy keeps it to himself knowing that no white man would ever believe it possible. When Jackboy reports his findings, Johnson realizes there is no time to seek approval from his commanders or wait for reinforcements. They are the only ones who can prevent the mass slaughter of sixty men, women, and children despite the odds against them. Johnson hands Jackboy one of his spare Henry rifles and says, "You earned it. Kill 'em all and do it fast." Filled with pride, Jackboy replies, "We might be outnumbered, but we won't be out-gunned."With steely resolve, the small band of Union troops launches a rescue mission to save the sixty doomed slaves and maybe even capture two dozen high-ranking enemy officers and politicians. One day, she learns the story of a wealthy Bristolian white woman, Dolores, who was the daughter of a slave trader. A devout and religious woman, she was disgusted by the family trade and begged her father to stop. She finally convinced him - only after one more sale. He and her brother met a storm on their return from the Caribbean. The twelve slaves survived; her father and brother did not. Dolores liberated the slaves and found a young black tutor, Boripé̩, originally from Nigeria, to teach them English. The former slaves learned trades and gained employment, and Dolores and Boripé̩ fell in love. As no church in Bristol would marry them, they travelled to the Caribbean, where the eventually wed in a church in Antigua.Throughout her years teaching high school, Comfort is haunted by Dolores's story and the horrors of slavery. She sees parallels between the slave trade of old and the political and economic slavery of today. She realises that the only way for the people to take back their lives and the economy is to turn their focus from the white-collar sector that has seduced them with empty promises of prosperity to learning trades that can provide them with self-sufficiency and self-employment. She decides she must finally act, and she and Kó̩lé, with the help of the Sage, set up a trade school.At the trade school, Tó̩lání and Bashy both make an appearance, as they are unknowingly employed there. Comfort and Kó̩lé, with the Sage's help, work to heal the wounds of the past, and eventually all is forgiven. Bashy realises that Tó̩lání was his soulmate and not a mere conquest, and the two marry.

Eight cousins travel to the state of Louisiana to their annual vacation together with light hearts and hopes of fun and adventure. After arriving at their destination, the lady at the desk of the luxury resort told the cousins they were sorry, but they had overbooked, and could put them in the mansion at the edge of the property. The ladies were told they could still do all the activities at the resort, so it would be okay with them. The cousins were not disappointed, because they had never been in a mansion that big, and they would have fun no matter where they were. One thing they didn't know was it had been told the mansion was haunted. That didn't concern the cousins because they didn't believe in such things. They knew the staff at the mansion would have things set up to scare their guests, but they were tough and could take it. The new people they met were colorful and fun, and the activities they participated in were just what they needed. It was all going well until two people were shot and carried out on a stretcher from the dining room while eating dinner. This had happened two nights in a row, and no one knew who would be next. Could the mansion really be haunted?

Nicotine, The World's Silent KillerAddiction is defined as giving up all that is important to you for the thing that you are addicted to. Nicotine is highly addictive.
