Imagine a democratic Catholic Church run by the parishioners. Molly Winters experienced that in Massachusetts. She didn't expect to find another such parish when she returned to Minnesota, until one found her. Since childhood, she wanted to be a priest and, in many ways, she functioned as one. Despite wondering if ordained priests would become obsolete, she prepared for ordination. She refused to be ordained until she was called by a worshipping community. A dilapidated building, tornado and a bishop who wanted priests back on their pedestals, created such a possibility. The bishop wanted St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church closed and the parishioners merged into other parishes. He scolded them for allowing divorced Catholics to receive Communion, welcoming same sex couples and refusing to use the official 2011 translation of the prayers for worship. He knew closure was impossible. His successor suppressed the parish only to have the Catholic Community of the Apostle Mary Magdalene become a reality, and the ordination of Molly Winters a necessity. Over the years Molly observed one of her parishioners, Amanda Donato, deteriorate after learning her parents were not her biological parents. She drowned her mother's abandonment in alcohol. While she despaired, her brothers searched for her birth family. After rehab Amanda is forced to join her pastor driving around Lake Superior. Molly's priesthood had been threatened by nasty notes and stalkers who saw women priests as destroying the Catholic Church. Molly's expectation that in leaving town she was escaping these threats was unfounded. Along the way police assist as together the women face addiction, kidnapping and car bombs; as well as beautiful foliage. As their journey winds down, Amanda's brothers connect their sister to her birth family. The story begins with campaigning for Senator Paul Wellstones. As the books nears its end Amanda finds a shocking reason why Donald Trump might be elected president. She's sure

  • - The Incredible Journey of an Employee and Manager
von Jack Stahlmann & Mark Luis Foster
    41,00 €

Many employees of companies across the country can relate to the idea that their office sometimes resembles the hot mess of a soap opera. Such a premise generated an interesting question: What happens if an employee and his manager showed up to work one day, only to find themselves inside the chaotic environment of a TV soap opera? The co-authored manuscript, "Days of Our Work Lives: The Incredible Journey of a Manager and Employee" explores that very idea."Days of Our Work Lives" is a single story written from two different perspectives. Designed as a flip book, it provides the reader with one angle written from the manager's view, while the other angle is written through the eyes of his employee. Our main characters, Jack (employee) and Mark (manager), arrive at work expecting a typical day, only to discover that their office has inexplicably transformed into a set of a typical soap opera. Jack is now the star of the soap, navigating his new world while trying to find his true role. Mark is thrust into the role of the soap's director, delicately balancing the needs of his team with the pressures coming down from the network bosses.Readers of self-help, motivational and business management books will appreciate the unique way each writer navigates through the sudden chaos of a TV soap opera production, complete with humorous and sometimes eerie similarities to the typical work environment at any company. The story showcases the tensions that exist between managers and employees when the heat is on, and how such situations can be resolved.About the authors: Jack is a former actor and current corporate speaker who humorously addresses workplace challenges for audiences nationwide. Mark owns his own marketing advisory firm in Minneapolis and spent several decades as a senior marketing executive who managed people and projects for Fortune 500 companies. As an added bonus, the book features two forewords from industry notables: one from the former longtime producer and director of "Guiding Light" and "Days of Our Lives," Roy Steinberg, and the other from Alice Hirson, actress from "Edge of Night," "Another World" and "One Life to Live," with primetime credits including "Dallas" and "Ellen."

He visits his mother at Farmington, Missouri and learns from her, dad was an alcoholic and also exhibited severe mental symptoms. She did not know much about his side of the family, but recommended to contact a grandma living in New York.Peter found Grandma Agnes extremely forthcoming about her family history and learnt from her, his father returned from Vietnam as a heroin addict, quit using it after finding out of his Hepatitis and later turned to alcohol. Grandfather lived in and out of State Hospitals and committed suicide. The next step for Peter was to find a good psychiatrist. He learnt the best way to find one was through the Physician Referral Services of a good hospital, following it up with Face to Face Assessment. He was totally surprised by the first psychiatrist selected, who in spite of his high qualifications ignored the family history he painfully collected, telling the medical student’s problems came from witnessing as a child, the abuse father inflicted on the mother. With no desire to see him again, Peter met another psychiatrist who was extremely interested to hear about his family history. She told him, he definitely has a Depressive Illness, however, the family history increased the risk of developing Bipolar Disorder. After discussing the various treatment options, they decided on a trial with an antidepressant.  A week into the medication, Peter woke up from sleep feeling more energetic than usual, a natural high, and asked himself if the medicine hit the target earlier than intended. He learnt from the new psychiatrist, his diagnosis now was Bipolar 2 and she told him to discontinue the antidepressant, as it could make his condition worse.Meena got perplexed hearing about Peter’s new diagnosis and began to worry about her future with a seriously mentally ill person. Grabbing an offer that came from New York Presbyterian to do neurology clerkship, she moved to the Big Apple, on the pretense to be closer to her parents. Devastated Peter took an overdose. It took a while for him to recover.Couple of months later, Peter received an unexpected phone call from Meena – Her father, a neurosurgeon was in coma after a plane accident that happened on a business trip - Mother had a nervous breakdown. Meena begged him to come to New York and help her. Father died soon after his arrival. Mother showed signs of improvement only after receiving ECT.Father’s sudden death and mother’s illness shook up the daughter. She returned to St Louis to finish the school year and prepare for graduation. Peter was accepted to the residency program in psychiatry at the University. His main interest was to do research and wished Meena would take up residency in psychiatry as well and be part of his research team. However, she was into the neurology residency. One Sunday afternoon, after church Peter and Meena decided to take a stroll through the Saint Louis botanical garden. It was a beautiful day and a gentle breeze made it feel even better. They sat on a bench, close together, in the Japanese section and watched the people passing by. She chose this moment to reveal her secret, “Pete, I have a surprising news for you. I just found a slot open in psychiatry. Someone from overseas cannot make it. I have been promised it.”

  • - Games In The Street
    von Leonard Marks

This is the city tourists don''t see and most New Yorkers - the ones with jobs, the ones with money, the ones who own homes - don''t even know about. It''s the city where the hookers and pimps and strippers live and survive, where the predators exist and prey on the rest of us and on each other, the city where violence is commonplace and nearly always present. It''s midtown Manhattan where visitors come to see shows and eat in fancy restaurants and sleep in expensive hotels but it''s also where the furnished rooms and SRO''s are, where the chicken hawks work the streets and docks, where weapons are always close to hand and the police write off murders and assaults. It''s the world of John Board and John Puddle and others like them. This is the seventh in an exciting and almost unbelievable series of books about life in the underbelly of New York City, a place populated by strippers and pimps, prostitutes and predators. The author was a New York State parole officer for thirty years and lived the life he writes about. His characters come alive, their problems become your problems and their adventures will be felt and experienced by you. The story is told by a man who barely survives each day but does manage to do so. He is violent but some people depend on him and trust him with their lives. It''s a book that you will probably have difficulty putting down and may read more than once.

Verily, after having been a constant watchful recipient about project funding subject from the field and having accumulated a sound experience for such a long period, it has appeared to me like a personal duty to release my modest contribution to all parties involved in any project, for now, hoping that as the first of its kind, this book can awaken from the fact only both funders and recipients. • - Issues and More Issues
    von Terry Thompson
    20,00 €

This book deals with the underlying issues associated with Personnel Security Vetting. It provides the rationale as to why certain behaviors are thought to have value in the process and others do not. The environment is largely that of the national security arena but much of the material can be extrapolated to the private sector. Various levels of vetting are linked to risk levels i.e. how important are certain assets to protect and how much in resources is the company willing to invest to protect those assets. The methodologies typically used (background investigations, polygraph and interviewing techniques) are dissected and decisions as to which to employ are explored. In the final analysis, decisions in Personnel Security vetting are risk/benefit determinations dependent on the mix of circumstances present at the time. Probabilities, percentages and environmental limitations are some of the ultimate determinants in the decision making process and recognition is given to the notion there are no perfect vetting measures.

As we finish of what geography requires of us, we now dwell on giving a clear account to the important natural impact of the desert and other sections and regions of the peninsula on the people as topography affects them and colors the weaves of their fabric. Topography gives us a clue of how and why people believe and think in such a fashion and how they differ from other people in another natural topography. Aside from that, it imprints upon the people a denominator and a common natural bond. Meanwhile, we are equipped with whatever factors we examined above, and are ready to discuss the early people of the Arabian Peninsula and their development of a tribal state system, as some tribes began to establish themselves within a permanent geographical location, functioning as a sociopolitical entity independent like city states in early Europe. Arab tribes were pagan and had many natural and physical gods. Tribes had special gods, and seldom, a single tribe had one adopted god too. At a later stage, we find some tribal heads confessing Judaism and converting therefore number of their tribes to this faith.

If you are tired of Democrats and Republicans making empty promises, and their followers dogmatically choosing sides on every debate and issue so their guys can remain in power, you''re a lot like the author of this book. Tackling tough issues like the immigration debate, slavery reparations, minimum wage, taxes, college tuition, the insurance industry, business, the role of government in ordering our lives, prisons, the relationship of society to police, and many more, he proposes revolutionary solutions instead of choosing to spend 70,000 words needlessly criticizing. Coming from the view that every human is an image-bearer of God, and that all man-made structures and agendas are open for debate, he offers up solutions to some of America''s most burdensome problems which can be considered and implemented to make both sides happy. Understanding that too many people nowadays take themselves far too seriously, he also gives the reader many self-deprecating and humorous asides (something sorely lacking in political and social debate). Buy this book and join the fight against poverty; namely his poverty.

Parallels That Cross is a delightfully creative novel that will take you down literary paths like those you have explored with Barbara Kingsolver’s books. Gary Graham interweaves stories of his two equally important main characters and presents their stories with diverse sentence and paragraph structure in a literary manner that may remind readers of Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. Perfect for book clubs seeking an enjoyable alternative to dystopian or fantasy novels.Parallels That Cross launches us into the worlds of ancient cultures, never before seen wildlife, parental and sex-based relationship anxieties, and the fundamentals of love – all wrapped around a man and woman presented as equals and given equal page time. This novel pivots on Mica, an archaeologist, and Clay, an ornithologist, who are independently and simultaneously resolving their anxieties while searching in 1982 for extraordinary treasures hidden deep in the Peruvian wilderness. Mica is exploring for an ancient city she theorizes was founded by women led by a princess daughter of Peru’s last reigning Inca ruler. Clay, working on his doctoral research on another side of the same mountain, is testing his new biodiversity model that predicts discovery of new avian species. Mica suffers from a lifelong self-doubt that she will turn out like her lesbian mother. Clay is tormented by his own nightmare that he has become his philandering dad. Ultimately, they must confront whether their lives are controlled by destiny or free will.Rich with humor, poetry, music, imagery and using a creative story-telling format Parallels That Cross and 2019 William Faulkner - William Wisdom CreativeWriting Competition Semifinalist Gary Graham deliver a novel unlike any you have experienced. What Makes Parallels That Cross UniqueMica and Clay•    Their love of life, discoveries, music and humor coupled with childhood traumas.•    Female and male main characters are given parallel and equal page time.•    Characters portrayed realistically without the sanitizing constraints of mainstream media.Settings•    Experience the beauty and mysteries of Elfin forests and puna grasslands in Peru.•    Quirky campus fun at Berkeley, Louisiana State University, University of Wisconsin and University of New Mexico.•    A Peruvian culture rich with wonderfully gentle people you will want as friends. How the story is told•    Genre bending - shifting easily among literary, thriller, romance and adventure fiction.•    Side-by-side chapters to reveal Mica’s and Clay’s lives simultaneously.Discoveries•    Explorations in nature and archeology that make you want to become a scientist.•    Original poetry and humor that make you want to become a writer or comedian or both.Book Excerpts•    “I choose, navigating by grace and with gratitude.
