We live in troubled times. There appears to be a “war” within the United States. With the controversy regarding gay marriages, racial hatred, violence, terrorism, and distrust, this book is very relevant today because people are searching for truth. The lessons in this book consist of topics ranging from controversial present-day issues to just plain situations that women find themselves caught up in. Whether the issue is with one’s job, family, community, or is church related, they are tackled in a godly manner. The solutions to current problems facing women were given to me spiritually by the Lord and are the essence of the book. I feel that He is using me to get His message out to His people of how He wants us to be more responsible in our treatment and behavior toward our fellowmen, thus the title of the book, Go Forth! I Am My Brother’s Keeper.

In Chronicles of a Child, we follow the life of a child named Bessie. We are allowed to see life through the eyes of a child. Sometimes she seems to be wise and somewhat mature for her age. Other times, she just wants to be loved by her mother and treated like a child. She gives us insight on how children experience and process life. Bessie helps us to understand that children take in everything—they take on the problems of the adults in their life. Sometimes they even take on the blame. Will Bessie overcome her guilt?

The title “There Isn’t Any Grass on This Side of the Fence” is really a metaphor of poverty-stricken people who don’t have a choice but to remain in their ill-fated, destitute state. These people (as the subtitle indicates) have no money to even maintain a sufficient standard of living. They have no knowledge as to how to get themselves elevated up the financial hierarchy. Lastly, they don’t have the time to ascertain their predicament and to move up the food chain. This is a story that begins in the 1960s and ends some decades later. Placidville is really a 1960s ghetto filled with poor and uneducated people. The project, as it’s called, is a place of racial hatred, bigotry, and discrimination. Criminal activities are the order of the day. The theme of the project is to do on to others before they do on to you. The people are not just living; they are trying to survive. Little do they realize, once they move in, they will probably never be able to get out. Placidville is a spider’s web for those without funds. It’s an attraction that the have-nots cannot resist. Once in the web, the people soon become aware that escape is beyond their grasp. The project changes most everyone for the worse. In Placidville, all families become dysfunctional and continually fight among themselves. The project makes neighbors say and do terrible things to each other in order to gain an edge over the other. As time goes on, the residents learn how to cheat, steal, and to take advantage of every good or bad opportunity that come their way. The Placidville Project is a disease and there is no cure. To make matters worse, corrupt town officials and the police want nothing to do with the project. It’s a big headache that they wish would go away. However, this headache is not going away in the near future.

It is estimated that 1 in every 6 boys will experience a sexual encounter with an adult at some point in their lives before they reach the age of consent. In this day and age, many adults find this topic unsettling and will often circumvent the issue even if they remotely suspect that some form of abuse may be occurring.Parents, regardless of intent, have a tendency to blame the victim, which further perpetuate feelings of guilt and shame in the child. They don't know what questions to ask, and if they do, they may not believe the answer no matter how honest the child is capable of being at that moment.Groomed tells the story of abuse and how it changed the trajectory of who the author would have been. The story is told from the perspective of a thirteen-year-old victim and a fifty-five-year-old survivor.

  • - My China
    von Ernest Danek
    30,00 €

In Teaching in Long Underwear: My China, Ernie Danek shares his experiences of living as a foreigner outside of the major cities in China. As an American entering his early years as a senior citizen, he faced the challenges of teaching for a decade in the Middle Kingdom's public university system.  During his time there, he developed an oral English teaching plan for freshman English majors. Ernie observed in his day-to-day experiences the numerous differences between Chinese and American cultures. Many stories were told to him by his students of the grotesque follies that resulted from Chairman Mao’s efforts to expel Western and traditional Chinese influences from China during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. Ernie’s students insisted on hearing his American viewpoint of China’s successful launch of a manned, orbital spacecraft. His comment, “It's like watching your little brother learn to walk,” produced both titters and scowls. Teaching in Long Underwear: My China provides an honest account of what it is like to teach outside of the major Chinese cities and what it means to live as a foreigner inside an ancient culture.

This title, Navy Grass, was taken from my own experience in boot camp while I, Bob Whited, was still a seaman recruit. I was leaving the Chow Hall to find my company and tried to take a shortcut through some gravel to get there faster. Instead, I was caught by the duty master-at-arms and was told that “the gravel that you walked on was Navy Grass.” He said that “in order to free you to return to your company, you should at least apologize to this Navy Grass.” He made me get down on my knees and apologize to Mr. grass, which I did. He kept saying, “Louder, I can't hear you.” The louder I got, the more sailors gathered around me as I kept finally hollering, and he kept saying, ”No one can hear you.” I kept yelling, ”I'm sorry, Mr. Grass.” By then, it attracted several hundred until he finally left me go to find my company. I never forgot to this day that ordeal. When I decided to write the title for this narrative and memoir, I could not resist the temptation to call this book Navy Grass. Most everyone will wonder why this title, and now they will know. It has been over fifty-five years, and I can still picture myself down on my knees in a plot of gravel apologizing to Mr. Navy Grass.

While advances in medical science and disease treatments are always welcome, real transformation of healthcare requires us to focus on whole persons, not just maladies. Our responsibilities to ill people, and frail elders, including those with dementia, are not merely obligations, but also response-abilities. Beyond relieving suffering and meeting their basic biological needs, we can nurture each individual as a whole person and promote his or her wellbeing. The benefits are tangible and mutual. Helping professionals are rewarded through the deep and meaningful connections they form with the remarkable people they serve. In Return of Compassion to Healthcare the Tellis-Nayaks offer blueprints for person-centered care that can guide leaders of healthcare, aging services, government and business in building enlightened clinical programs and assisted-living communities for medically ill and otherwise vulnerable people. As Vivian and Mary Tellis-Nayak so clearly show, solutions are available. Evidence-based treatments are valuable, however, the best care is also tender and loving. Ira Byock, MD is founder and chief medical officer for the Institute for Human Caring, Providence Health & Service. His books include Dying Well and The Best Care Possible.

The book deals with decisions made by the characters that would affect their future lives. How it affects their lives is surprising and unpredictable. In these stories, the characters are driven by their egos. The results are sometimes good and sometimes bad and sometimes it is up to the reader’s opinion.
