Living as a normal middle class family of four, this family learns to deal with the old phrase "e;I thought that only happened to other people"e; as one of them is framed for a murder. Framed so well the entire family is forced on the run from the law in order to keep them together. Uprooting their lives, and taking on new identities, their adventures take them through hiding out in big cities to living in the wilds in the Ozark mountains. Fighting against the elements of nature to protecting one another from wild animal attacks. Finding lots of adventure and meeting many new friends along the way, and finding out the hard way that blood is not always thicker than water. Coping with deaths of family and friends as they suffer the pain they must continue their journey of protecting themselves and each other as they are each subjected to possibilities of death on their travels to the unknown, driven by destiny surviving by wit and instinct. This family leaves a lifelong favorable impression on the lands they travel and the hearts they touch. That is until the long arm of the law reaches out and tears them from the new lives they had worked so hard to create effecting so many in a devastating manner, as the children are forced by law to live with the true murderer, as ruthless as he is, and made to survive in unspeakable circumstances' protecting each other along the way as Mom and Dad are thrown in jail for a murder they did not commit. Though as the law tightens its grip, unforeseen allies formed along their journey come to the rescue.

This book is about the real Old West. The research presented here comes from what I've found during my more than forty-five years of researching American history, but especially what I've learned in regards to the other side of the myths and legends of the Old West. In 2010, I started a blog, The American Cowboy Chronicles, to share what I've learned and celebrate the virtues of America. My articles on the Old West have never been meant to dispel the myths or attack legends but to simply explain what I've found after taking a hard look, an honest look, an objective look, at the evidence that's available. Since evidence proves or disproves what we've all been told about the Old West by Hollywood and writers who are not objective researchers, this is my attempt at taking a fresh look at Wyatt Earp, Tom Horn, and others. But mostly, this book is about why the American Cowboy became America's quintessential role model. This book looks at why the American Cowboy represents American toughness, independence, and resilience to the rest of the World.

The first part of the book introduces the reader to what it is like to be a child who is different. The reader experiences how exceptional this is through Mia, who had a special different friend whom she loved spending days together with at school. As the story continues on, one day something dark happens, and Mia learns that she needs her mama to help her understand and cope with the grief of the tragic news. The middle of the story focuses on tough questions and the feelings that often come when someone experiences a life-changing event. Mia shows the different emotions we may go through after losing someone while also providing opportunities to express them through reflection, stopping and talking about our own experiences and comforting each other. The author includes the ideas of how diverse cultures have their own traditions of coping and cherishing the times we have had with a loved one. The story also shows how the concepts of faith in God, a parent's love, and the healing process of remembrance aid in managing the feelings and emotions that one feels. The author examines the importance of life's challenges and how it affects lives every day through uncertainty, which lingers at the beginning and end of life's journey. The story depicts how appreciating the importance of friendship, kindness, love and respect for someone who is different shows a caring sentiment. It opens the door to discuss a theme that can be hard to talk about with young children after the loss of a loved one. It encourages parents and children to be open about their feelings and emotions in times of a crisis and that unforeseen conditions sometimes visit us suddenly in life. At the end of the story, the author explains these occurrences through the memories of the ones who had and lost a special different friend and how empathy and compassion through this tough time empowered healing.

Tony Capadora was in big trouble. He had been charged with the shooting murder of pop singer/songwriter Filip Beron, and the evidence against Tony appeared to be overwhelming. To start, Tony had publicly accused Filip of taking credit for writing a hit song that Tony had actually composed. Then, the murder weapon had been found buried in Tony's backyard. Finally, Filip had been able to write, in his loose-leaf, the first four letters of Tony's last name, just before he died. Tony was innocent, but he had no alibi and very little hope of avoiding decades in prison. Then, superstar detective Amy Bell was hired to try to clear Tony and find the real killer. With the encouragement and assistance of her husband, Jeremy, Amy slowly but surely uncovered various aspects of Filip's dark side. She identified many people who had reason to wish that Filip were dead. But it would take more than just finding other possible suspects to save Tony from the nearly airtight case against him. A police detective told Amy she was pursuing a ten-million-to-one long shot. But the vivacious and witty Amy was not one to give up, regardless of the odds. Author David Schwinger, when not writing Amy Bell mysteries--there are now eleven--enjoys composing songs, playing pickleball, and traveling the world with his wife, Sherryl. He first met Sherryl when she was his student in a mathematics class he taught at City College of New York. Their secret romance became the inspiration for his first Amy Bell mystery, The Teacher's Pet Murders.

The Politics of Public Higher Education: Strategic Decisions Forged From Constituency Competition, Cooperation, and Compromise is the third in a set of three books that provides higher education leaders, faculty, and system and institutional planners a reality-based view of decision-making in higher education. The focus is on how issues and related problems are translated into strategic initiatives that become the basis for leadership solutions. How the decisions are arrived at is very much influenced by the constituencies within higher education such as faculty, staff, students, and institutional leaders and their interaction with those external to higher education, like a governor and legislators. The interactions are political. On one level, they represent the internal politics of higher education constituencies seeking to highlight their priorities, and on another level, they represent the external politics of elected officials and their representatives seeking support from the public. There is often substantial conflict and competition to gain advantages in funding or as an organizational priority. In this book, we assess the politics within and between the internal and external parties and how those politics should be defined within any strategic planning process. The Strategic Decision-Making Model (SDMM) is applied to help identify and resolve problems. The model consists of six components that ensure that all constituencies are heard and that alternative solutions recognize the key variables necessary to guide a leader's final choices. The six model components are strategic thinking as an organizational mentality, maximizing the amounts and quality of data and information for comprehensive reporting, scanning the future globally, implementing comprehensive strategic planning, supporting transparency of process and decision-making, and using a framework to consistently assess all planning issues, strategies, and outcomes.

The book is an exploration of the Vietnam conflict from my personal experience. Given the time and distance from the event, the perspective becomes more clear. Two administrations, Lyndon Johnson's and Richard Nixon's, lied, distorted and extended the war for years, resulting in thousands more dead and wounded. Cabinet members such as McNamara and Kissinger were directly culpable in misleading the American public regarding the success of operations in that country. Perhaps most tragic were the nonstop visits by government officials and members of Congress to Vietnam. They were feted, debauched, and lied to. Their subsequent press conferences always painted a rosy picture of progress and winning. As early as 1965, the CIA was reporting the conflict as being unwinnable. There were several unique properties of this conflict. While only one in five GIs were assigned combat duty, there were no "e;safe"e; or "e;rear"e; areas. Nobody had the luxury of relaxing, feeling safe. GIs were rotated in and out of country on an individual basis. When our tour was over, we were put on an airplane, and hours later, we were back in the land of the BIG PX with little or no decompression time. The logistics of removal of the dead was so efficient there was almost never a chance to say goodbye, to pay respects, to process the loss. Perhaps the two most unique elements of the conflict were the fact that we never lost a battle but lost the war and the surreal intrusion of live war coverage every night into the television sets of America. This latter fact gave birth to pressures on MACV to invent such news bits as body count, hooches burned, acres of defoliation, and gallons of Agent Orange. Throughout this circus, the American fighting man distinguished himself as a warrior, as a patriot, and as resilient in the face of a determined and skilled enemy. Once back in the USA, there was trauma and vitriol experienced by many at airports and street demonstrations. Agent Orange and PTSD have combined to result in more Vietnam vets dying by suicide than died during the conflict. The nation's homeless population is, even today, comprised approximately 20 percent Nam vets. The healing began with the Vietnam Memorial (the Wall) and has picked up some momentum with the Honor Flight Program. Half a century later, we've made a start to the healing. https://www.myvietnamjourney.com/

Most of the past publicity about the Unification Church (Unification Movement), and Reverend Moon has been negative. Jo Ann attempts to give an understanding of what this movement is all about, based on her experiences, and as seen through her eyes, and explain what made her and thousands of American young people join this movement. She also tries to give a basic understanding of the Divine Principle (the teachings of Reverend Moon). She says, "e;I believe if the world knew even the basics of the Principle, we could see the way to peace on earth, as we could overcome the things that divide us now."e;The chapter on "e;What We Believe"e; deals with questions humans have been asking from the beginning of time, including who or what God is, the purpose of life, our spiritual and physical bodies, spiritual growth, life after death, the origin of evil, the truth about the life of Jesus, the purpose behind human history, and the mission Reverend Moon said he was given by Jesus on a North Korean mountainside in 1936 when he was sixteen years old. The purpose of giving this basic understanding is to help make happy individuals and families at a time when so many people feel there is no purpose in life or ability to save this world from destroying itself. Jo Ann also explains the meaning of the "e;Blessing,"e; which refers to the well-known group wedding ceremonies, a hallmark of the Unification Movement. She was matched by Reverend Moon to a Japanese groom, and they participated in the Blessing ceremony of 2,075 couples in Madison Square Garden, New York, in 1982. ______________________________________________________________________________Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Jo Ann Crooks grew up in the fifties, sixties, and seventies. Like so many children of that time, she grew up in an alcoholic home as her father (a World War II veteran) tried to deal with the horrors of war by drinking. She also grew up as a Catholic, and her early experiences of faith influenced her decision, as a young adult, to join the Unification Church (Unification Movement) and have helped her to continue in the church for over forty years. She considers herself a "e;regular"e; member of the church, not a leader of any kind and a "e;typical"e; American. She has two adult children and two cats and currently lives in Tempe, Arizona, a city near Phoenix.

Racism is generally defined as a person of one race exhibiting superiority over a person of another race. The fallout of such behavior can range from disrespect to intimidation to outright violence. Why does this happen, and what would it take to prevent and stop racial incidents? In this observational analysis, York explores the array of issues that contribute to the problem, including failure to acknowledge the realities of racial employment and violence, failures in individual responsibilities, a lack of focus on our shared Americanism, and direct pot stirring for the purpose of political gain. The good news is that we can absolutely reverse elements of racism out of existence, particularly in view that politicism breeds far more hatred in twenty-first-century America than racism. So turn the book over, start reading, and take note of how you can individually make a difference.
