This book shares a wealth of educational stakeholder viewpoints about digital distraction from a 1:1 technology integrated high school. Data was collected before, during, and after the start of COVID-19, which provides a unique view into integrated learning and its transformation since the pandemic. The author conducted interviews with both teachers and students who also provided logs of their technology use, allowing for a qualitative and quantitative understanding of digital distraction. Through this insight, the author explores the triggers of digital distraction and strategies to help mitigate the phenomenon.

This book provides a rich, multidimensional analysis of how prostate cancer is lived, treated, and perceived by different actors through the stages of care, rehabilitation, and recovery. Furthermore, it focuses on how side effects, such as urinary leakage and impotence, affects the construction of masculinity. Though the book foregrounds men treated for prostate cancer, it also includes the voices of partners and health care professionals, such as urologists, contact nurses, and sexual health counsellors. The focus is on both phenomenological aspects of prostate cancer-how the disease affects men's self-perception and lifestyle-and on sociological aspects-that is, how gender and masculinity are understood and negotiated in social situations/interactions. Situated within the field of critical studies on men and masculinity the book engages in an intersectional analysis of the relationship between prostate cancer, class, and ageing masculinities, as well as providing an analysis of the complex relational triad created when voices of treated men, their partners, and health care professionals are brought together.

This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of the fiction of Constance Antonina (Nina) Boyle: a suffragette described in one obituary as 'second only to Mrs Pankhurst'. Boyle was a well-known campaigner and was the first woman to stand for selection as a candidate in an election in the UK. However, her novels have been all but forgotten. This study explores Boyle's early fiction and focuses on her first five novels - each of which represents a retelling of established narratives. It explores how Boyle used her fiction to voice her radical gender politics within a culture that was becoming increasingly hostile to even discussing women's rights outside of the extension of the franchise. This book will be of interest to scholars of women's suffrage as well as anyone interested in popular fiction of the 1920s.

Fashion is a research topic of increasing interest to economic and business historians as it points towards new understandings of economic growth and decline. This book explores the role of institutions and institutional change in the Italian fashion system from the 1940s to the 1980s. Starting from the premise that institutions play a central role in explaining the peculiarity and development of the Italian fashion system, this book analyses the diverse institutional entities involved in supporting and promoting Italian fashion. The objective is twofold: to highlight, with a comparative approach, the distinctly polycentric nature of Italian fashion and to explain the emergence of the stylist as the outcome of a lengthy process of institutional change. The book explores the role that institutions and institutional actors have played in making Italian fashion a key player into the world economy, enriching the existing interpretative framework through unique interdisciplinary analysis. This book reflects on the centennial of women's suffrage in the Nordic region and beyond, by exploring its relevance to political gender equality today and the conditions for feminist institutional change. The book brings together historians and political scientists to provide a long-term historical perspective that lays the groundwork for theoretical development. In this regard, the book makes two key contributions: it furthers our understanding of different types of gendered institutional constraints on women's political inclusion and elaborates feminist institutional strategies to counter these constraints.

This book proposes that it is not only states and international bodies that have a responsibility to take action toward mitigating climate change. Other collective agents, such as corporations, need to also come onboard. Additionally, the book argues that climate change is not solely a problem for collective agents, but also for individuals, as they are members of collectives and groups of several kinds. Therefore, framing climate change responsibility exclusively from either the collective or the individual perspective leaves out something crucial: how we all are influenced by the collectives we belong to and how, in turn, collectives are influenced by individuals. The focus of the book is on areas of climate change responsibility that are often left out of the picture or get too little attention in climate ethics, such as carbon inequality within countries. But why should any theoretical arguments about normative issues matter when we have a real-life climate crisis on our hands? Säde Hormio argues that ethical arguments have an important role in setting climate policy: they can highlight what values are at stake and help ground normative arguments in public deliberations.

Around the world, Islamic cultures have developed distinctive matrilineal, matrifocal, matrilocal, or matriarchal natures as a result of how they have been practised by integrated and indigenised Muslim communities. In matrilineal descent systems, in contrast to the more common mosaic of patrilineal patterns, children belong to the mother's ancestry group. Matrilineal Muslims therefore follow a social system in which people are identified with their mother's lineage, and the inheritance of property as well as succession are transferred through the matriline. This volume focuses on matrilineal, matrifocal and matriarchal Muslims and their unique folk natures, integrated social structures, adopted legal systems, and so on. It provides a unique perspective for understanding global Muslim communities that have succeeded in integrating the matrilineal tenets of local practices with religion, adhering to essential Islamic values in a way that makes traditional women-centred cultures acceptable to mainstream Islam.

This book challenges the historical common sense that the American Revolution terminated in the birth of the United States. Prevailing narratives of the Revolutionary period rest on the assumption that the war ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Yet from London to Philadelphia, and from the Six Nations' trans-Appalachian homelands to the shores of Sierra Leone, the decades after the treaty's signing roil with accounts that disturb the coherence of this chronological division. Insurgent Remains assembles a counter-archive of textual and visual materials--ranging from popular seduction tales and political cartoons to the writings of self-liberated African Americans--that furnishes alternative visions of revolutionary historical experience as an ongoing negotiation with violence and contingency. The book argues that the minor temporalities and political literacies registered in this archive cannot be accommodated by the progressive plot of nationalist history, in which the warfigures as a contest of only two sides (Tory/Whig, British/American, Loyalist/Patriot). Instead, they become legible as "remains" traces of attachments, modes of collective association, and unresolved struggles that bear insurgent political potential in their own right.

The concept of Global Business Services (GBS) is well recognised and researched by both scholars and practitioners. However, the complexity of applying GBS has been the subject of various critiques due to its effect on firms' business processes, service portfolio and provisioning of in-house as well as outsourced services. Although GBS results have been much criticised, this book argues that the rise of digitalisation reopens the question of implementing GBS successfully. The findings of this novel research, which is based on a multi-method approach, provide insights in relevant GBS factors and how these factors affect a GBS implementation strategy. Further analysis show how digitalisation, including platforms and AI, enable GBS organisations to decrease implementation issues. Research outcomes illustrate that firms which apply an enterprise ecosystem approach are better able to exchange GBS information. The willingness and ability of firms to intensify the collaboration at managerial and subject matter level will help to overcome GBS implementation challenges. This book puts forward the case that the rise of digitalisation enables GBS organisations to provide benefits and ensure that the GBS business model still matters. It will be of great interest to scholars and students of digital business and innovation.

This book analyzes the goals of Western sanctions imposed on Russia from 2014 to 2023. It explores the effects of sanctions on the Russian economy and its political course, as well as the repercussions of the sanctions to the senders and third parties, including spillover effects on neighboring countries and boomerang effects on the senders. While sanctions can be considered relatively effective in terms of economic damage, the Russian economy is far from being crushed. Importantly, sanctions proved to be ineffective as an instrument of foreign policy. They have failed to alter Moscow's resolve to continue its military operation and are unlikely to change it in the near future. The effects of the sanctions extend well beyond their anticipated impact on Russia itself, primarily due to the Western nations' limited experience and knowledge in implementing sanctions against a major power with extensive global connections, such as Russia.

This book traces the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) from its inception in 2013 to its re-election to the Bundestag in 2021, emphasising the party's nature as a "populist issue entrepreneur" and covering the three major crises that have shaken European party politics - the Eurozone crisis, the so-called refugee crisis and the COVID pandemic. Currently, books on the AfD are largely limited to historical accounts and surface-level analyses of the party. This volume is both empirically rigorous and conceptually nuanced: it seeks to understand the party's political trajectory and its appeal to its supporters by using advanced quantitative methodologies to analyse voter behaviour, as well as by interpreting the party's communication strategies through mixed empirical methods. It embeds this account within a well-grounded theoretical argument. The argument emphasises three important explanatory conditions - a favourable political opportunity structure, issue entrepreneurship, and the party's stages of political development.

This study traces the welfare regimes of Mauritius and South Africa from the early 20th century focusing on the historical circumstances that gave rise to the dominance of state-funded old-age pensions within their respective welfare frameworks. It highlights intersections between powerful business interests, the state, and social forces that sowed the seeds of social entitlements. Due to different mobilisation efforts of these social actors, both countries have spawned welfare regimes of different persuasions. Mauritius has maintained its long-standing traditions as a social democracy stretching back to the late 1950s, while South Africa continues relentlessly in pursuit of a liberal welfare state, a journey it has treaded since 1928 when the old-age pension laws first came into effect. While unravelling the innermost workings of welfare state development in Mauritius and South Africa, it also probes the present political and economic circumstances that have kept these two welfare regimes resolutely unchanged. Against this backdrop, it draws parallels between current welfare outcomes and those of old as they continue to chart their way into the future.

This edited volume traverses the spectrum of experiences that take place after children leave the family home and parents find themselves in the "empty nest" stage of life. Rather than focusing on measuring the intensity of empty nest syndrome or asking whether parents' marital satisfaction increases or decreases in this phase, the authors present rich qualitative data from across Poland and France to show that there is great variation in how families experience the empty nest, developing both a study on intimacy and love and on family solidarity. Working Women on Screen: Paid Labour and Fourth Wave Feminism critically examines screen media representations of women's participation in the contemporary labour market. The edited collection brings together contributions on Aesthetic Labour; Power, Politics, and Neoliberal Industries; and Sex, Sexuality, and Relationships.Within the context of fourth wave feminism, there has been a new proliferation in the global media landscape of representations of women's paid labour. This has coincided with the development of critical and ideological issues surrounding intersectionality and culture wars, as well as the impacts of recessions, political upheavals, and pandemics. Workplace dynamics and post-#MeToo politics have led to the complexification of structures, oppressions and relationships that impact what women can do for money. This book offers eight validated instruments on workplace bullying to support robust mixed methods approaches for social justice research. Workplace bullying is an excellent starting point from which scholars can consider social justice research. The data shows that marginalized and disenfranchised groups (minoritized groups, women, junior faculty, and the LGBTQ+ community) are disproportionately affected. The outcomes included career interruption and severe health disparities. Though there is a demand for workplace bullying instruments, the book also lays a foundation for creating surveys to address these populations more effectively.

This book explores pastoralist/ farmers' approaches to environmental disaster management in East Africa, charting their responses and adaptations to famine, pandemics, natural disasters, and historical events. Using a dynamic adaptive cycle theoretical framework, it uses social memory to reconstruct an 'event history calendar', thus combining social memory and written historical records to reconstruct the adaptive strategies of pastoralists. It explores the climate history of the southern Ethiopian and northern Kenyan frontier, considering, in particular, the impact of the colonial period and independence thereafter, providing a significant contribution to debates in African environmental history.

This open access book sets out simple solutions to managing complex catastrophes. It focusses on four kinds of crises - climate change, crime-war cascades, epidemics and financial crises. These catastrophes are conceived as complex and prone to cascade effects. This book is optimistic in explaining that there are identifiable simple institutions that international society can strengthen and some simple principles that can help humankind to control the expanding gamut of complex catastrophes that confront the planet including simple, stable institutions and regulatory bodies. It draws on a wide range of current and past crises and challenges, from the Cold War to COVID-19, and from Weapons of Mass Destruction to restorative diplomacy with States like China, to provide an urgent and timely path forward. This volume explores contemporary African women's creative writing, highlighting their contributions to ecofeminist theology. Contributors address the following questions: How do contemporary African women writers depict the Earth/land/environment and its relationship to women in various contexts? How is religion featured in African women's writing? How does religious literature (scriptures) form an intertextual layer in African women's writing? The contributors proceed by analyzing the intersection of religion, gender, class, sexuality, colonialism, and ecology in selected texts written by African women. They bring these texts into conversation with broader eco-feminist theological scholarship, exploring the potential of literary writing to contribute to theological discourse of liberation and social justice in the African and global arena.

This book analyses the effects of public governance reforms on gender equality policy in Finland. Recent economic crises, rising austerity and increasing opposition to gender equality have led to the defunding of gender equality bodies, and the side-lining of gender equality as a political goal. This policy backlash has taken place alongside transformations to the state and governance, that have changed the discourses, knowledge, actors, and practices of gender equality policy. This book contributes to these discussions by demonstrating the subtleties of the constantly changing governance reform agendas, their operation in practice, and how they intertwine with other elements of the gender equality policy backlash. It is based on more than 100 interviews with civil servants, politicians, non-governmental organisations, social partners, and think tanks, and a broad range of policy documents and media material. This book charts new waters in the study of European naval power. It explores the evolution of Europe's navies from the final days of the Cold War to a period of hybrid wars and renewed strategic competition, manifest in Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's increasingly aggressive behavior in the Asia-Pacific Region. The study compares and contrasts the development of maritime forces across the continent during a period of fundamental change within the global security environment. In this open access book, Tim Aylsworth and Clinton Castro draw on the deep well of Kantian ethics to argue that we have moral duties, both to ourselves and to others, to protect our autonomy from the threat posed by the problematic use of technology. The problematic use of technologies like smartphones threatens our autonomy in a variety of ways, and critics have only begun to appreciate the vast scope of this problem. In the last decade, we have seen a flurry of books making "self-help" arguments about how we could live happier, more fulfilling lives if we were less addicted to our phones. But none of these authors see this issue as one involving a moral duty to protect our autonomy.

This book examines the efforts of the government in Scotland to manage the increase of migrants travelling to Britain at the end of the nineteenth century. Focussing on the period between 1885 and 1914, the book explores how the Scottish machinery of government handled the administration of 'foreigners.' The author uses a comparative, thematic approach to analyse migrant experiences, identities, and relationships with state institutions. Drawing from state records held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh, the book argues that Scottish officials in semi-autonomous boards began to recognise, describe and enumerate the presence of the 'foreigner' in the early twentieth century, framing their handling of foreignness in accordance with the Aliens Act of 1905. The author goes on to explain that institutions operating in Scotland developed a distinctly Scottish approach to alien matters, which continued up until the Second Word War. Therefore, an increasing number of importantdecisions affecting migrants were taken by a distinctly Scottish machinery of government, impacting on how Scottish officials understood foreignness, and how those identified as foreigners understood their identity in relation to Scottishness. Contributing significantly to current heated debates on migration and identity amongst researchers and the general public in Europe and beyond, this book provides essential insights into the ways in which a 'sub-state' began to develop practices, processes and attitudes towards migration which were not always in line with that of the central government.
