Darstellungen zum Sprachsystem bedienen sich medialer Sprachkorpora oder legen ihren Untersuchungen bestimmte mediale Repräsentationsformen von Sprache zu Grunde. This volume contains 53 contributions by participants of the 37 Linguistic Colloquium which took place at Jena University in September 2002. The contributions are focused on the role of the modern media in language use and linguistics. Research into the language system is based on media language corpora or forms of language use in the media.

The Missing Link identified by Michèle Kaiser-Cooke explains the fundamental translatability of the world. Based on Darwin¿s theory of evolution, a link is established between various human interpretations of reality, as manifested in cultures, languages and disciplines. These different constructions of reality are essentially commensurable and therefore also translatable because of the common experience of the conditio humana. The only limits to translatability, whether between cultures, languages or disciplines, are set by the limits of human communication. By clearly defining the translation paradigm, the author makes it possible to explain the commensurability of all languages within the concept of the indissoluble unity of theory and practice.

By bringing together three different academic disciplines ¿ anthropology, political science and history ¿ and covering a variety of different parliamentary assemblies, both in Europe and in the United States, this book aims to offer a fresh approach to parliamentary studies. The authors assess the importance of ritual and symbolic communication in different parliamentary settings. The underlying question that each practitioner and scholar addresses is: Do parliamentary rituals really matter? Some of the contributors argue that legislative procedure is more telling of the role and reputation that a parliament has in a given society than its rituals and ceremonies. Others stress the relevance of these ritual expressions for conveying political sense and meaning to the public.

The contributions in this volume examine literary and other texts as well as cultural and political discourses in relation to issues of identity formation and dis-formation, of self and society and of the socially local within the global. All these issues come into play through the exploration of the fantasmatic space of mutual mis-recognition and mythmaking between coloniser and colonised, between ¿Africä and ¿Europe¿.

This is an intellectual biography of the early life and missionary career of James Legge (1815-1897), a monumental figure in 19 century European sinology. In the first volume details about Legge¿s family, religious setting, and educational experiences in northeastern Scotland are shown to anchor his intellectual interests, shaping his later religious transformation and commitment to Chinese missionary work. The trials, adjustments and initial missionary strategies of the Legge family¿s first years in Malacca and the new colony of Hongkong (1840-1848) bring this volume to a close. In the second volume the flourishing of Legge¿s missionary scholarship is cast in the context of his application of «principles» of Scottish Nonconformism and Scottish realist philosophy to many unexpected aspects of the Hongkong and Chinese contexts. While his sinological scholarship has weathered more than a century of criticism and neglect, Legge¿s unexpected emergence into roles as a Scottish Nonconformist prophet and counter-cultural folk hero in Hongkong reveal new dimensions of Protestant missions in China which challenge standard Orientalist interpretations of cultural imperialism.

The ideal of mathematical exactness is strongly paradigmatic for modern science, for which Mathematics practically functions as a metaphysical foundation. This strongly influenced Philosophy. In our century, however, critical voices arise, even from the ranks of scientists. Reflection on the foundations of Mathematics has produced a deeper insight into its nature. The tendency to judge content by structure becomes less predominant. Metaphysics is no longer rejected as only producing constructions with unjustified claims to necessity. This book combines contemporary Philosophy of Mathematics with classical philosophical themes. It replaces the anti-metaphysical tendencies of modern and postmodern Philosophy by an unrestricted horizon of epistemic perspectives.

This book is about Keats' odes of the spring and autumn 1819. The author employs close reading to shed new light on the development, through struggle within the images, of each ode and the ode sequence. She shows how, as an outcome of this struggle, Keats achieves a new understanding of poetry's possibilities, of the dialectical nature of life and the historical process.

Due to the widespread dissatisfaction with the way fiscal sociology is being neglected while benefiting by its ever-growing importance, the volume Essays on Fiscal Sociology aims to provide a source, reference, and teaching supplement for the field of fiscal sociology. The essays comprised in this book were originally prepared for and read at the Erfurt Conferences on Fiscal Sociology. Please note that this conference is open to all researchers in this field internationally and it is taking place in the second week of October, before the semester starts.

The work of the West German artist Rainer Werner Fassbinder is as versatile as it is extensive. During the 16 years of his artistic career, Fassbinder produced more than 40 films and staged 29 plays half of which he had written himself. In doing so he not only drew on aesthetic traditions as diverse as the German folk play, the American gangster film, Hollywood melodrama, the Theatre of Cruelty and the French Nouvelle Vague, but also worked in three media simultaneously: theatre, cinema, and television. It has often been pointed out that this versatility appears to forestall any conceptualisation of Fassbinder¿s work from the vantage point of its production. The present work aims at exactly such a conceptualisation by exploring the interplay between his work for the different media.

The book presents an application of inductive and deductive research modes in an analysis of political discourse. The discussion is illustrated with text samples from inaugural addresses of US presidents and various speeches given by prominent NATO politicians. It is argued that both analytic approaches have their inherent inadequacies, which poses a need for an integrated research mode. Also, numerous observations are made about the rhetoric of the analyzed text types.

This work is a thorough investigation and comparison of intonational features of two varieties of English: the English spoken by speakers of educated Southern British English and the English spoken by native speakers of Finnish. The investigation is based on a large database and an exceptionally thorough acoustic analysis, and the discussion presents new perspectives on interlanguage intonation. The work also contains a very detailed review of contemporary theories and models of intonation. This book is intended for phoneticians and linguists, as well as teachers and students of English as a foreign language.

Aviation versus Environment? Late public discussion of this issue did not even put a questionmark. The suspected vast effects of air traffic on global environmental problems such as climate change or ozone layer depletion led to an urgent demand for both practical solutions and a political framework for the conduct of airports and airlines. This book contains the expertise of environmental organisations, politicians, airline and airport managers who discussed these issues on the second Hamburg Aviation Conference, held on February 17 - 19, 1999. Taking into account the environmental and economic needs for air traffic, the conference was a stage for a constructive debate between aviation business and environmentalists and showed a broad range of measures in regard of environmental problems linked with aviation.

The book is a festschrift, dedicated to Hans Dieter Kubitscheck, the former head of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at Humboldt University, Berlin. Ten authors discuss the relations between ethnic minorities and the nation state in Southeast Asia in colonial and modern times.

This book examines the early work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), writer, journalist and woman of letters. She became famous in the 1830s with her Illustrations of Political Economy, a series of 25 short novels popularizing the basic principles of Political Economy. Also discussed are her two shorter series of tales from that period, Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated and Illustrations of Taxation. With these works Martineau took part in an intense debate about the role of economic theory in English society. Drawing on such authorities as Adam Smith Martineau offered her readers the possibility of understanding the impact of the Industrial Revolution and its concomitant changes.

This study of Wolfram's Parzival concentrates on service for riches in medieval knighthood. The epic is interpreted as a conflict between reciprocal feudal loyalty and self-centered mercenary service. The actions of Gahmuret, Anfortas, Parzival, and Feirefiz are held up against the historical background of the crusades, where service for abstract ideals is undermined by service for material gain. Although the power of riches is subdued by the sword in the end, the author maintains that the Parzival is an heroic defense of feudal values in an historical state of decline. He also criticizes traditional Parzival interpretations based on the chivalric system of the virtues, religious didactics, courtly love relationships, and dynastic relationships.

Pluralism is more than difference in behavioral patterns. It is a fundamental difference in worldviews, and Nigeria typifies it. It implies that autonomous individuals within a societal continuum do not constitute an integral amalgamation of a body-politic. A multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-lingual blend, Nigeria serves as a good laboratory for pluralist test. What Nigeria needs is authority in order to articulate these plural and conflicting world-views into a reasonable discourse or committed dialogue. It is then the challenge of authority in Nigeria to reconcile the apparent incompatibilities within the multiple groups into a reasonable consensus. Plagued with the pathological equivocations of human rights, incessant military coups and counter-coups, vicious ethnic discrimination and lack of regard for meritocracy, Nigeria stands as a classical example of a leaderless society. Derided by foes as a political patchwork, and portrayed by friends as a potential volcano, all that Nigeria needs is authority that can articulate her numerous but diversified potentials into a catalyst for human development. No sustainable political or social foundations could be laid in the absence of this desideratum.

Reading a series of prose texts by 20th century white women writers ranging from The Making of Americans to Civil Wars this study interrogates a correlation between authors' subject positions as white and their textual investments in American history. It displaces the diffuse acceptance of whiteness as a given property by foregrounding it as a shared, and unquestioned feature of the white reader's and the text's consciousness. To trace the literary legacies of white amnesia about the Middle Passage is an urgent response to white women writers' participation in US-American historical mythology. At a point of convergence of Black Studies, American Studies and Gender Studies this investigation results in a profound denaturalization of what American history and American cultural memory may signify.

Rather than emphasizing William Soutar's role as a major protagonist of the Scottish Renaissance - a role which has gained greater recognition in recent years -, the author, in this study of William Soutar's life and work, has chosen to listen to the voice of a great visionary searching for meaning and wholeness in a disunited and unstable world. Taking Soutar's philosophy of the Righteousness of Life as a starting point, she traces his reflections on creative writing, death, religion, pacifism and other related spheres and establishes fully, for the first time, the width of this Scottish writer's philosophic range. By drawing upon the treasure of Soutar's private papers, she reveals a facet of his work which glows with the intense presence of his observations on concerns that are still fundamental for our understanding of modern society and politics.

The educational and cultural determinants of the tempo and direction of transformation of the democratic and the normative order in post-totalitarian society are analysed. The author's analyses presented in this book attempt to answer the following question: How does one pass from normative order to normative integration? Which properties of the new systemic educational identity are conductive to the active creation of social normative order in Poland? What is the religious adaptation to the new state formation? Is it possible in a short time to build in Poland a new pragmatic and progressive educational system based on the unified school which is democratic with unified education and the freedom of choice?

This book attempts to build a complete theory of stress in Old English. In particular, the author tries to elucidate the relation, in that language, between stress placement and syllable weight. Eventually, he finds that the syllable should be abandoned as the central notion of Old English metrical phonology and replaced with the mora as an independent unit of phonological quantity. These findings are then applied to a new, phonologically-based analysis of the rhythm of Old English poetry.
