  • von Helen Yeates
    23,00 €

War baby Helen Yeates was a latchkey kid from the working-class Brisbane suburb of Annerley, discovering an escape to paradise in a dark cinema. This memoir captures a significant social and cultural history of Brisbane, drawing on her love of film in a highly original, evocative way. She falls in love and marries in the late 1960s, on the cusp of a time of swinging sexual liberation and radical politics. Surviving a devastating car accident, an addiction to prescription drugs and a traumatic marriage, she becomes a passionate feminist and leftie, navigating her way through a confusing world of changing ideas and morals. This memoir reveals a colourful life across the decades, in relation to love, sex, amnesia, brain damage, loss, education, partying and politics, with films illuminating everything. As an Australian pioneer of secondary and tertiary film and media studies, she traces the highlights of a career nurturing young filmmakers and future educators. The book also reveals amusing encounters with international celebrities, a quick trip to Hollywood to hire a famous film director, and mis-steps with singer Bob Dylan and French actress, Isabelle Huppert. ¿

  • - Love, Hate & Coffee
    von Andrew Fewtrell
    22,00 €

When two mighty coffee-producers from opposite cultures collide, love and hatred come together to form a thrilling result. Set in the lush surroundings of rural Brazil and Vietnam, this is a suspenseful love story, on many levels, but also a tale that strongly champions the worth of family values. Luiz Almeida, the patriarch of the Brazilian family, his intelligent and beautiful granddaughter, Gabrielle and a strong-willed, but very troubled, young Vietnamese man, Dai Ca Phung, are the individuals who form the basis of this epic story that spans the period between 1956 and 2014. Dai is infused with hatred of "anything American", due to his tragic upbringing in Vietnam. He uses this to plan a devastating attack on the coffee plantation, owned by the Almedia family, Nova Coffee ... Brazil''s biggest exporter of top-quality coffee to the USA. All goes to plan, until Cupid fires his romantic arrows.

In an Australian country town in the mid-1960s, a couple of adolescent boys are busy experimenting with incendiary devices while their town, including their school, is suffering a series of arson attacks. Are the boys responsible? At least, in part? Or is there something larger afoot? And how did it all go so dreadfully wrong? Meanwhile, in a small city not far away, another group of boys, somehow connected to those in the other place, get up to their own mischief playing with fire. This, too, with a whiff of the infernal, goes badly. The interlocking stories of Playing with Mischief are an exercise in smoke and mirrors. Along with real smoke, of which there is plenty, the stories are infused with a figurative smoke that obscures who is responsible for what. As to mirrors, consider the manner in which the diverse perspectives of these stories reflect back through one another. And then, beyond such obvious references, we should consider fiction's overarching artifice, in which Willis saw an affinity to the legerdemain of fairground magicians, the archetypical practitioners of smoke and mirrors. Playing with Mischief (the title itself suggests an alternative: Playing with Fire) is also an exercise in stylistic variation. The paired novellas, Mischief and The Fires, third and first person narratives respectively, are bookended by the shorter pieces, Invocation and The Exercise Book, distinctly at opposite ends of the stylistic spectrum. These different, to some extent contending voices enhance the basic mirroring effect between the competing narratives. Or, to shift the metaphor, they create a space in which whispered implications echo. An invocation of a world gone by, a world in which ghosts still wandered foggy streets and sometimes it was better to consult a priest than a doctor. An Australian country town in the mid-1960s.Teenage boys playing with guns and gunpowder.A series of suspicious fires.Where the fuse led was clear, but who struck the match was not so evident. Afterword by Josephine Tey.
