पहला पाठ पहला पाठ भीष्म साहनी का पहला कहानी-संग्रह है जो 1957 में प्रकाशित हुआ था। कहानी 'चीफ की दावत' जो उस समय बहुत चर्चित हुई थी, अपनी संवेदना और कथ्य की सामयिकता की वजह से आज भी उतनी ही पठनीय है। चन्द्रधर शर्मा गुलेरी की कहानी 'उसने कहा था' की तरह भीष्मजी की कई कहानियाँ मील का पत्थर हैं। 'इंद्रजाल', 'पटरियाँ', 'अमृतसर आ गया है', 'ओ हरामज़ादे' आदि कहानियों के रचियता साहनी का कथा-संसार समृद्ध एवं व्यापक है। जीवन के विविध पहलुओं एवं भंगिमाओं को सहजता से रच वह मर्म को छू लेते हैं। सामाजिक प्रतिबद्धता के नाम पर नीरस और उपदेशात्मक रचनाएँ उन्होंने नहीं दीं। प्रगतिशील आन्दोलन से सक्रिय रूप से जुड़े होने के बावजूद भी निरन्तर वह नारेबाजी से स्वयं को बचाये रहे। उनकी कहानियों में सोद्देश्यता है, करुणा है, व्यंग्य है; और अन्तरंगता है। कला की सामाजिक प्रतिबद्धता को यथोचित मान देने वाले कथाकारों में भीष्म साहनी का नाम अग्रगण्य है। पहला पाठ की कहानियों का नया संस्करण करने के पीछे हमारा मन्तव्य उनकी कहानियों में पाठक की निरन्तर रुचि एवं माँग को पूरा करने का है।
