This vintage book contains an English translation of the Shikshapatri, a religious text comprising two hundred and twelve Sanskrit verses. The verses were originally written by Lord Swaminarayan (1781 ¿ 1830), a yogi and ascetic whose life and teachings sparked a revival of the Hindu practices of dharma, ahimsa and brahmacharya. The Shikshapatri is an important scripture for those who follow Swaminarayan and constitutes the foundation of the sect's beliefs and traditions. Sir Monier Monier-Williams (1819 ¿ 1899) was the second Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, England. He dedicated his life to the study, documentation, and teaching of Asian languages, in particular Persian, Sanskrit, and Hindustani.
