  • - Principles and Practices
von Judith S. Trent, Robert V. Friedenberg & Robert E. Denton Jr.
    77,00 - 159,00 €

Now in its seventh edition, Political Campaign Communication provides a realistic understanding of the strategic and tactical communication practices utilized in contemporary political campaigns. It draws on a wealth of examples from local to national political campaigns and communication theory to illustrate principles and practices of campaigns such as functions, stages, communicative styles, public speaking, debates, interpersonal communication, political advertising, and the use of the internet and new media. Trent, Friedenberg, and Dentons classic text has been updated to reflect recent election campaigns, including the 2010 congressional elections and the initial stages of the 2012 presidential election. Many sections now focus on the most recent presidential elections, and the campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain. In addition, the authors have examined the expanding role of the internet in political campaigns. Political Campaign Communication continues to be a classroom favorite-a thoroughly researched, insightful, and reader-friendly text.

This is the story of the historic ship Vegäs first missions of mercy¿a real-life sea tale complete with vicious storms, exotic locations, heart-rending moments, and priceless glimpses into real life on some of the world¿s most remote tropical islands. In December 2004, Shane Granger and his partner, Meggi Macoun, had just completed a sailing odyssey from South Africa to Malaysia and were enjoying a well-earned siesta when the Boxing Day Tsunami changed their lives forever. In a matter of hours, unstoppable waves, often over ten meters high, demolished cities not only in Malaysia but also as far away as Sri Lanka, Thailand, and East Africa, making it the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. With thousands of people suddenly in dire need, Shane and Meggi loaded their vessel with donated food and medical supplies, then set sail for Sumatra to deliver aid.For their ship, the Vega, the mission was a return to her origins. More than a hundred years earlier, in 1892, one of Norway¿s finest boat builders had launched the legendary ship, specially designed to sail fully loaded with heavy cargo such as limestone, bricks, pig iron, and cement through some of the world¿s roughest seas. Vega soon became famous for her ability to carry loads other boats her size could not. And now her legacy would continue as she returned to actively carrying cargo, though of a very different kind.Shane and Meggi¿s first mission of mercy marked a turning point and evolved into a passion. Every year since 2004, they have undertaken a 7,500-mile journey to carry tons of free training, tools, health supplies, and educational materials to remote island communities in eastern Indonesia and East Timor. To date, Vega has sailed more than 100,000 miles, delivering everything from pulse oximeters and midwife kits to backpacks and sports equipment and visiting locations few outsiders will ever see. The adventures they encounter along the way are nothing short of amazing.

  • von David Harper
    43,00 €

As a WWII tour director for thirty-five years, David Harper has repeatedly heard the same questions from an extremely varied American and British audience: ¿Why did the Germans vote for Hitler? Did they know about the concentration camps? What did German soldiers and members of the SS feel about the extermination camps and the war crimes they were committing? How do today¿s Germans view Hitler and the Third Reich? What is the country doing at present to address those dark pages of its history and to remember the victims of Hitler¿s regime? Do the right-wing demonstrations in Germany portend a resurgence of Nazi ideology today?¿ All these questions and many more are addressed in Exposing the Reich. The book seeks to promote an understanding of how the devastation and tragedy of the war and the concurrent genocide could happen. It studies the lethal blend of inciting hatred, ongoing indoctrination, justification for drastic action, and the complete control of all media. How many people know, for instance, that Hitler was writing an opera when he lived in Vienna or how he developed his antisemitic outlook while living there? Few know about the early political and ideological influences on Hitler¿s worldview, such as those instigated by his little-known mentor, Eckart. Who has ever heard about Hitler¿s ¿second book,¿ in which he revealed his major foreign policy plans, a manuscript that remained secret? How many realize that Hitler¿s regime planned on replacing Christianity with its own ¿religion¿ and substituting Mein Kampf for the Bible? Why did Hitler name his regime the ¿Third¿ Reich, and why did he choose the swastika as its logo? Why did the fine arts enjoy such an honored status during the Reich? What were the lesser-known original purposes of the concentration camp system established in Germany just weeks after Hitler seized power? Who realizes that, just prior to Hitler seizing power, the Jewish population in Germany was a mere 0.7%?These, and countless more insights regarding the Third Reich, are revealed in Exposing the Reich. From young students to well-informed history buffs, readers will gain a wealth of new insights into Hitler and his regime of terror.

  • - A Concise Contemporary History
von Michael J. LaRosa & German R. Mejia
    49,00 - 114,00 €

Written by two leading historians, this deeply informed and accessible book traces the history of Colombia thematically, covering the past two centuries. In ten interlinked chapters, Michael J. LaRosa and Germn R. Meja depart from more standard approaches by presenting a history of political, social, and cultural accomplishments within the context of Colombia's specific geographic and economic realities. Their emphasis on cultural development, international relations, and everyday life contrasts sharply with works that focus only on Colombia's violent past or dwell on a Colombian economy deeply dependent on narcoticsa tragic nation that barely functions. Instead, the authors emphasize Colombia's remarkable national cohesion and endurance since the early nineteenth-century wars for independence. Including a photo essay, detailed chronology, and resource guide, this concise yet thorough history will be an invaluable resource for all readers seeking a thoughtful, definitive interpretation of Colombia's past and present.

A comprehensive examination of the mental health challenges that elite athletes face in Americäs most popular sports. Athletes that compete at a high level¿whether in professional, college, or Olympic sports¿face numerous mental health challenges as they strive for perfection and ultimately victory in their sports. And while mental health awareness for athletes is better than it once was, efforts to hide the existence of these mental disorders and challenges remain well-ingrained. In The Burden of Sports, John Weston Parry examines the mental health and emotional well-being of elite American athletes generally, as well as in relation to spectator sports propaganda, the legal system, politics, and the effects of the Covid pandemic. This book covers mental health conditions that any elite athlete may encounter, from depression and anxiety to substance abuse and concussion-caused brain damage, to the special challenges of female, queer, transgender, and intersex athletes. Featured throughout are narratives of well-known American athletes, including Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, Michael Sam, and Tiger Woods. From individual and team pressures to win and attain sport perfection to the prejudice and ignorance of fans, management, and corporate sponsors about mental health, addressing the mental health of athletes and challenging the public perception of such struggles is long overdue. This is a timely and necessary book for readers that want to see sports change for the better in support of Americäs athletes.

  • von Annelies Gisela Moeser
    118,00 €

In Jesus the Oracle, Annelies Gisela Moeser reads Jesus¿ journey from Capernaum to Jerusalem in Mark¿s gospel through the cultural context of 2nd-3rd century Roman Egypt. Moeser provides a rich description of the Egyptian practice of oracles, including processional oracles, to build a model with which to read Mark. This prism brings attention to descriptions of Jesus¿ supernatural knowledge and wisdom, e.g., in the story of the Rich Man (Mk 10:17-22). In contrast to Clement of Alexandriäs homily on the Rich Man which counseled detachment from possessions, this reading from a non-elite perspective considers Jesus¿ advice to be more radical. This model of processional oracles highlights the importance of access to the divine, including by non-elite crowds, by persons with disabilities (for example, in comparing Bartimaeus (Mk 10:46-52) with Gemellus Horion of Karanis (a town in Egypt)), and by children. Traditional Egyptian religion upheld the existing socio-political regime. However, Jesus¿ procession and proclamation of the basileia (reign) of G*d subverts the Roman world order and that of their local, elite allies.
